Foreshadowing Change

This is a work in progress, and the first story I've added on here. Expect the rest in the next week or so. Enjoy!

Foreshadowing Change- Part 1.
Chie sprawled lazily in the food court at Junes, soaking up a little sun and sipping a can of soda before leaving for the Amagi Inn. Yukiko was knocking off early that evening, and their fortnightly sleepover, which had been a tradition since they started at Yasogami High, was taking place tonight. They’d missed a couple recently what with the debacle inside the TV world, but tonight as was customary they could forget all about that... or could they?

For as Chie sat there listening to the chirping of cicadas and the synthetic jingles of the Junes sound system, the same thoughts she’d been having since they saw each other’s shadows played again on her mind. The shadows had revealed a degree of inter-dependence they had perhaps always been aware of, but never acknowledged. Chie blushed as she recalled that Yukiko needed her friend to protect her, and give her something to aspire to. A ‘prince’, her shadow had called Chie. She also remembered, with a stab of shame and guilt, her own shadows painful revelation that a certain part of Chie revelled in this dependence, empowering her over her more attractive and popular classmate. She tried to push it from her mind, then remembered it was a part of herself and jumped slightly, expecting a shadow to emerge right there in the food court, tasked with reprimanding her. She sighed, resigned, and sipped her drink.

Her thoughts turned back to Yukiko. She recalled a phone conversation she had with her deeply embarrassed friend after the rescue had succeeded. Chie knew Yukiko would be resting, and the others would doubtless not have approved, but following that, well, ‘confession’ from a deeper part of her best friends self, she couldn’t help but probe her further in private. Yukiko had confessed, much to Chie’s surprise, that the shadow wasn’t merely manifesting Yukiko’s admiration of Chie in a heavily dramatised form, but also reflecting Yukiko’s thoughts in a more direct way. She did, after much awkward questioning and even more awkward silence, reveal that the fantasy scenario in the TV world was not altogether alien to her own personal fantasies. She was quick to stress ‘it’s not like that!’, and Chie had believed her, but still they felt somehow...closer. She was certain it was not one-way. There was a softness in Yukiko’s eyes when they made contact, hesitant smiles and tension in the air. It had been confirmed by Yosuke this very lunchtime as they sat on the roof and ate their meals together.

‘Hey... you think Yukiko-chan has really recovered?’
Chie was shocked, suspecting that Yosuke had seen her looking ill.
‘Whassat? Yosuke, has something happened!?’
‘No no no, it’s just...ah man, I guess it’s nothing.’

There was no mistaking it. Chie saw the glint in Yosuke’s eye and the flash of a knowing smile. She knew what he wanted to say, but he could only bring himself to put it in a smile. Her only comfort was that their leader showed no indication of being as quick to catch-on... if there was anything to catch on to.

This would be their first sleepover since Yukiko’s recovery, and Chie knew she would be lying if she said she knew what was going to happen. A muffled announcement came over the Junes soundsystem. The time was now 8pm. She should really be off. She drained the last of her drink, tossed it in a trash can, stood up with resolve and headed for the elevator. This was going to be...interesting.
