Prologue
In a small human farming community in the Hillsbrad Foothills, there was a house with a little vegetable patch. A young woman was tending the laundry in the back yard with a little grubby boy, bouncing around her, shouting.
"Lina! Can I please have a piece of pie? I'm starving!" cried the small dirty boy."PLEASE? I'll do all of my chores."
Lina Darkmoore turned back from the clothing line, where she was hanging the freshly washed bedding, to face the boy. "No, Toby. You'll ruin your supper and you know Father's birthday is today. Apple pie is his favorite. We must wait for him" said Lina. " And besides we both know that you don't do any chores around here!" She stated angrily while taking a half hearted kick in Toby's direction to shoo him away, " I do them all for you!"
Toby laughed at her attempt at kicking him in the behind, and ran around the other side of the house. As he ran around the corner of the house, he yelled, "Aww, you're just mad cause you couldn't go for a walk in the woods with Bobby Jenner! HAHA! Lina and Bobby sittin' in a tree. K- I- S- S- I- N- G!....."
She could heard the rest of the taunt, fade as he ran around the back of the house. "I am not! I don't even like Bobby Jenner! And you better not try to sneak any of that pie off that window sill, Toby Darkmoore! Or I will be the one tanning your hide!" she yelled after him. Turning back to hanging the rest of the summer bedding,They were preparing for the Fall and she wanted to get the summer bedding washed before it was put back into storage. "Stupid kid!" she grumbled. "He's going to drive me crazy one of these days."
Lina finished hanging the rest of the laundry on the line and headed into the small house to make sure that Toby didn't get into the apple pie. Her father worked hard to provide for their little family and deserved to have a nice dinner with dessert for his birthday. She wished that her mother was there for the special day, but her mother had passed away giving birth to Toby five years earlier. It always made her a little sad to think of all the special days that her mother didn't get to spend with them. She whispered to herself, " We really miss you, Mother. I hope you're watching over us from where ever you are at now. I hope you are happy and at peace."
Chapter one
It was a clear and bright late fall day in Hillsbrad. Bobby Jenner, from the farm next door, was humming an off-key tune, and enjoying the small freedom that he had while out checking his father's rabbit traps. He had just two more to check before heading back to the back breaking work of tilling the fields that his father had in store for him. He stopped to pick some blackberries that he spotted. Just then he heard a noise in the clearing a few yards away. Deciding to investigate, Bobby took out his sling just in case it was a deer or boar, that he could kill and take home to his mother to cook for that night's supper. When he reached the edge of the clearing, he gasped. It wasn't a deer or a boar that he found. He had stumbled across a contingent of horde raiders heading towards their tiny little town. Knowing that he could make it back before they reached his home, Bobby ran home to sound the alarm bell that was placed in the center of town. He knew that it was probably a hopeless act, but he knew that if he could reach the bell in time, that some lives could be saved. Such are the lives of the people who make their homes close to the Silverpine Forest, which was horde territory.
Bobby finally reached the bell and snatched the bells hammer off of the hook on the frame. He struck the bell with all of his might, wanting to be sure that everyone heard it. He called out, "The Horde are coming! THE HORDE ARE COMING!"
Everyone in the town dropped what they are doing, frozen by the sound of that bell. The Horde were attacking. Lina's father, Dunkan Darkmoore was out in the field with their family's only horse plowing the fields. He dropped what he was doing and unhitched the plow from the horse. "The children! Oh please whatever gods are able to hear my plea. Please keep them safe." the old warrior said aloud. He jumped on the horse and rode, hell bent for leather, towards his family stead. The sounds of clashing of steel and the smell of burning buildings and burning flesh greeted him when he reached the first homestead. It belonged to Joseph and Sally Kilpatrick. Joseph was his best friend and a fellow warrior and his wife, Sally, was his children's teacher. they were expecting their first child that fall. But the child would never be born, because they were trapped inside. He could hear their screams over the roar of the fire. The blaze was so great that he knew that there was nothing he could do for them. He felt sorry for the Kilpatricks and their unborn child, but he couldn't do anything more for them. He had his own kin to look after. He could see a half dozen orcs and a couple of Trolls jumping around, dancing and laughing as Joe and Sally screamed and died inside their home.
Rushing on, Dunkan rode past Joe's father's little one room house, and saw that Old Man Kilpatrick was lying on the ground a few feet from the little barn in behind his home. There was a great axe sticking out of the old man's back, where he was struck down while running away. Dunkan could tell that he was no longer with the living. There were a couple of the horde inside the little house ransacking the place. Taking whatever they thought would be of use to them, before they burned it to the ground. Some ways off to the left of the house was a tall, dark haired troll hunter and his pet wolf. The hunter spotted Dunkan but didn't make to attack him and even restrained his wolf from charging at him. The troll raised his light blue hands in front of himself, as if to say, "I have no quarrel with you. I won't attack you, if you don't attack me." Dunkan nodded his thanks and rushed on. He wasn't about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
Meanwhile, after getting over the initial shock of the alarm bell being rung, Lina sprung into action. She ran to search for her little brother, so that they could find a hiding place. She knew that her father would come and look for them when everything was clear again. She grabbed as much food as she could, the water skin hanging on the wall, and some bandages in case anyone was hurt. She stepped out the door calling for Toby.
She didn't make it very far when she saw them running down the narrow dirt road that ran in front of her families home. A large group of horde troops were coming down the small road . Some were on mounts, but most were on foot. She saw that they were too close for her to be able to leave and search for Toby. They would spot her before she got very far. So she scrambled back into the house, hoping that she would be able to leave after they passed the house.
As Lina waited for them to pass she crouched close to the front window of the little house, to watch for them to all be gone and hopefully see Toby or her father. She could see as they passed that there were mostly orcs, trolls and a couple Tauren but she could see a lone female forsaken, who looked to be a mage of some kind. This didn't bode well for the people from her little farming town. The mage was casting fire spells to set fire to the Jenner's home and she could see that Molly Jenner was still inside of the house. She was trapped and Lina could hear her screams for mercy. Mrs. Jenner's cries only made the horde more excited and set them laughing. Molly's husband, Tal, was being held by the two tauren. They had him tied like a hog waiting for slaughter. He was screaming and crying for them to stop and save his wife, but this only made them laugh harder. They forced him to watch his wife die and then let the trolls' raptor mounts tear him to pieces.
Lina was so horrified by what she saw she retched onto the floor. She couldn't comprehend how anyone could do such horrible things. Then she heard Bobby Jenner calling Toby's name. She shot up to look out of the window again and saw that Toby was running up the road and Bobby was running after him, but before she could run to the door to call for Toby herself she saw that Bobby had been shot by a very large orc warrior, who was holding an equally large gun. The shot took Bobby right between the eyes, and stopped him dead. The same orc mounted his timber wolf and bore down on her little brother, trampling him to death. Lina fainted dead away.
