"Got it." Otacon said going to find something. He looked around and tore electrical cords out of everything and tied them firmly together. He went to the window and threw it down for him, holding the other side. "This is all I could get."
“Keep it there, I’ll be on it once this clears out.” He said, looking at the feet of the officers move around the room and all around making himself invisible.
Otacon nodded and waited worriedly. "What are they looking for?"
“I think she lived with someone.” He said, not daring to believe they’d found her body. The problem being the noise they’d made with her back then. He had a sudden fear of them going to investigate. “Change of plans, leave to the airport and tell my good friend I’m here.” He said, as she’d probably deem this as ‘fun’ and come to help.
"What do you mean?! I'm not leaving without you!" Otacon replied. "Let me distract them!"
“Otacon do as I say, she’ll come get me” he said, trying to avoid the men at all costs. He was already halfway under the bed.
"I have an idea." Otacon said signing off. he grabbed one of the empty cases he had and headed downstairs. he snuck past the cops and saw a small crime scene investigation van parked with the police cars. he snuck over and quickly knocked out the CSIs and put them in the back. he put the same kit together they use and put on his labcoat after making a quick, but flawless ID. he looked around and walked up to the apartment. He walked up to the door and was stopped by some cops.
“[Sir, what apartment number are you staying in?]” asked the man in fast Japanese. Snake was worried out of his brain, one because he knew it did not involve backup, two because Hal could get caught, and finally because to top it all he had not rope on the window. He cursed mentally and thought about a way out. There was none that did not involve blood-shed since he was not armed.
Hal blinked. "[None. I'm the CSI you asked for.]" he said holding out the badge.
“[The… ah… ne… You guys just keep looking strange.]” the man replied, pointing to the building with an air of authority and a smile of someone who knew something you did not. “[Wrong building, we need you over there, it’s been a while too, why didn’t you respond? Now hurry up we won’t live forever ne?]” he asked with a smile. “[We think the criminal was let in and kidnapped her through the front door.]” he said.
"[Who gave that order must have told me the wrong building. None the less I think I should start here. It's how I work. I am the best afterall.]" Hal said. "[Now please clear your men out otherwise you'll contaminate the crime scene further.]" he said crossing his arms
“[Ei, ei, aren’t you the pushy one?]” he asked. “[I think you can work while my men work as well, you’re the best after all.]” he said in dismissing laughter and turned to give his men the orders needed. The cops around Dave where still making the area secure and that was a problem when they started to slide the mattress to look for a potential indicator of the criminal’s whereabouts. Snake was just sliding with the thing and trying to reach Hal. “O-Otacon?!”
Hal went over to the cop by the bed. "[Excuse me! Don't touch that!]" he said shooing him away.
“[Eh? Why shouldn’t we?]” the man asked, trying to be helpful, he didn’t want any problems between them and the CSI it would be counterproductive. Snake was frozen in the spot. ‘I know that cute gaijin accent.’ He thought with a smile. Which faded when the cop tried to be helpful by completely removing the mattress and leaning it on a wall. He had complete view of the cop’s back.
"[There could be fibers and samples on that bed!]" Hal shrieked. "[Put it back!] he ordered. "[Or i will have you arrested for tampering with evidence.]"
“[Oi, I was only trying to lend a hand! No need to eat me!]” protested the man turning to put the mattress back on, he then spotted Dave. Being the nice cop that he was he immediately lifted and hand to protect Hal. “[Stand back]” he said, reaching for the radio to call backup. Snake leaped from under the bed and reached for the man’s gun.
Hal blinked and looked at the cop. "[He's my assistant. He got here early to make sure we got every little detail.]" he said gently pulling his radio arm down. He looked at Snake and gave him a look telling him to go along.
Snake lowered his hand and came out from under the bed. He was so damn close all he had to do was reach out and he’d have the gun. But apparently the man was not going to hurt neither him nor Snake. That was good. The cop looked from one to the other and then scolded Snake. “[Well you don’t have to hide under the bed like that we’re trying to run a crime scene here, honestly guys!]” he huffed and went to put the mattress back.
"[He doesn't speak a word."]" Hal said with an embarrassed laugh pulling Snake to the side. "[Thank you now please let us do our job.]"
He was lucky Snake just went along with it and let Hal drag him wherever like a large cat when grabbed by the skin of his neck. He noticed that Hal apparently had them believe they where someone else. One of the cops was looking at a room they had not looked at.
Hal went to Snake once the cop was out of earshot. "Ok we get whatever we can from here and leave as fast as we can." he whispered. "We have the CSI van to take to the airport."
“How’d you do that?” he asked with a grin, rhetorical question since he was already doing as told. Apparently there was someone sitting on the living room being asked questions. She didn’t live alone, she lived with this nice man that was answering what he was asked. The interesting part that was guilt-tripping snake was the small toddler sitting on his lap.
Hal looked over at them and looked back at Snake. "How'd we miss that..?" he asked softly.
“I don’t know, but the sooner we get out of here the better.” He said, thinking that maybe if he would have gone to more rooms he would have noticed, since he had not seen anything else from this apartment then the living room and the office. The kid looked pretty foreign to him to be from both Japanese parents, maybe they had a very varied heritage for him to be so blond.
"I'm going to the bedroom to see if there's anything there." Hal said patting Snake on the shoulder. he walked down the hall and took his case with him. he looked through the closet and everything in it looking for any records or things that had to do with Ocelot.
Snake found nothing of importance however close to where Hal was looking there where documents that where linked to far too many familiar faces; Hal couldn’t miss them, they where on the desk and had names they’d heard dozens of times before repeated on the documents multiple times. The name Adamska printed and even signed.
Hal saw them and looked through them. "what the hell..?" he said softly to himself. he got an evidence bag out and slipped them in signing the outside labeling it 'Sucpicious Documents'. He double checked to make sure he didn't miss anything.
Snake just saw things that made him feel guilty. This is how things where, if he hadn’t killed her he’d probably be the one under murder investigation instead, as he knew she would not have hesitated to sell him out or worse, kill Hal. There, now he remembered why she was not alive. He then went to his partner. “She’s pretty clean.” He said, oblivious.
"Not with what I found.." Hal said pushing his glasses up. "Let's go.."
Snake followed him trying not to draw conclusions but this looked like a scenario he’d been expecting to find himself in somehow.
Hal walked out of the apartment with him. "We'll get the stuff out of our apartment then leave." he said through the codec so as not to get heard
“Understood” it came almost as a reflex and he replied the same way. The following instructions. He went to said apartment after Hal to grab the stuff as quickly as possible.
Hal helped him with the equipment and brought it stealthly down to the van he got the two unconcious CSIs out of the back and layed them under some cop cars.
Snake eventually helped Hal to get things in order and sat down behind the wheel to go. He waited until Hal was with him to leave. “What did you find?” he asked on his way to the airport.
Hal took the documents out. "I'm not sure but i'll let you read them on the plane."
“I have a feeling we’re going to have to come back.” He said, looking through the review mirror for a moment and then just reaching the place. He realized he had forgotten to make the call and anger mixed with guilt and worry as he slammed his hands on the wheel and growled furiously. “I can’t BELIEVE this!”
"Snake calm down.." Hal said putting his hand on his arm gently. "Why would we come back?"
“Let me look at the papers, God, Mei Ling told me, Hal, she /told/ me.” He lamented trying to calm down for Hal’s sake.
"Told you what?" Hal asked looking at him.
“Just let me look at the papers please.” He said, hoping not to find names on them. Or else they where going to turn back. Not that he would let that happen, he’d make the call first, turn back himself and leave Hal on the airport.
Hal handed him the papers. "Here." he said softly.
Snake pulled the one he had been looking for then read over it, most of them where either in English, Japanese or in Russian and the one he was currently holding was completely written in the mother-tongue, Ocelot’s that is. “Remember the kid?” he asked, reaching behind Hal and opening the door so that he knew Snake was serious. “That’s Gurlukovich, now get off and make that call.”
Hal blinked. "Gurlukovich?" He asked getting out. "He's dead Snake!" he added.
“He’s dead, not his grand-daughter she isn’t, please get off so I can go pick her up. This is going to be an interesting mess.” He said, looking at the papers.
Hal nodded and stepped back. "Be careful..Ok?" he said. "You don't know what they could do.."
“Yeah, I’ll be alright” he said, giving Hal a smile that yelled ‘everything’s going to be ok’ to the man and left. Where a certain pilot was still leaning back, eating a sandwich in the plane she was flying nearby Japan, no hurry, right?
Hal got on the phone and called her. "We need you do get here ASAP." he said.
She blinked a few times and turned around. Instant panic as well when she asked “Where’s Snake?!” if this pussy had put Snake’s life in danger she was eating him up.
"I'll explain when you get here he's not with me right now." Hal replied trying to calm her down.
She put her food away for later and concentrated in what she was doing; getting past customs in a blink and landing as fast as she found possible. She eventually pulled the plane to a full stop and even got off so she could go grab Hal by the hair or something.
Hal was waiting on the landing strip waiting for her. He looked at her and blinked.
“Now, explain where he is right now!” She said, stomping in his direction and grabbing him by the shirt. She was already reaching for her gun to shoot his kneecaps if he allowed something to happen to the man.
Hal yelped a little when she grabbed him by the shirt. "H...He went back.." he stammered
“He went… Did he send you here?” she asked, trying not to feel for the man if this was the case then he cared for this whinny little guy.
Hal nodded. "Y..Yeah..." he replied. "To flag you down and wait.."
“I see. Get on the plane, kid” she said, pointing her thumb at it then pulled her gun. She’d have fun with this one while Snake got here; and he was not even there to stop her.
Hal nodded quickly and got on the plane. 'please don't kill me...please don't kill me..' he prayed to himself
She followed him in and put the barrel of the gun on his neck. “Did you know that your breathing passage bothers me? You have a pretty voice, I think it should be the first thing to go if I want you out of the way.” She joked with a laugh. “Alright, you hungry, kid?”
Hal froze and trembled a little as she held the gun to his neck. "s.....s..sure..." he stuttered afraid to move.
She laughed again and handed him an old sandwich. “So, when are you leaving him or dying or whatever so I can pick up where you leave off?” she asked, pulling the one she’d put away for now.
Hal took the sandwich and looked at her. "What do you mean..?"
“You don’t expect him to be with you forever, do you? He’s had someone per every 3 to 5 years nonstop for these past years, you don’t honestly believe to be the last do you?” She said with a smile. “I think that’s his curse, though, he keeps living through it all. Even now, I’m pretty sure he’s going to show up in here in no time yelling at me for giving you a moldy old sandwich.”
Hal looked down a little. "I..I don't think he'd d..do that..." he said softly setting the sandwich aside.
“Right, he won’t yell, He’ll probably growl like he does; ‘Da! Don’t give him a sandwich like that meh!’” she tried imitating. “Well then I’ll just take a nap while he comes here.” She said leaning back on the pilot chair and taking a snooze. Snake was taking a while to get there.
Hal sighed and layed back in the chair.
The sun was setting when the pilot looked at the sky gravely from where she had sneaked to. She was leaning on the door to the plane and looking outside. Odd. She then went to where Hal was on the chair and tried not to rouse him while taking off without Dave.
Hal blinked hearing the engines start up. He looked around for Snake and didn't see him. He stood up quickly and rushed to the cockpit. "What are you doing?!" he shrieked. "Why are you leaving without him!??!"
“Shhh” She hushed while squinting as if he where giving her a headache. “Calm down, sweetie, he probably wanted me to do this to begin with” she said, this wasn’t going to be easy on someone who cared about Snake enough to trust him. “It’s eight and he hasn’t shown up, honey, he’s not showing up. If you prefer we can circle to see.
"Why didn't you try to codec him or something?!" Hal asked
“Honey, take It easy, please, I know Snake.” She said, lamenting that she thought it was all her fault for jinxing it. “Let’s just get you to a safe place and I’ll circle around and wait, ok?”
Hal sighed in frustration and sat down in the co-pilot seat
“Poor thing, I’m sorry, are you ok?” she asked as she knew Snake had probably disappeared from the map. “Do you have a place to fall back to? Home maybe? Old job?”
Hal shook his head. "No." he replied
“Alright then I’m taking you to my place and we can work it out from there.” She said, wondering if Hal was going to keep up this Philanthropy thing without Snake.
Hal looked at her. "I would rather stay here and look for Snake." he said.
“I’m already on my way there, hun, don’t make me turn”
Hal looked down and pulled his knees to his chest. "..."
“Oh Christ, kid, don’t look so pathetic” She sighed exasperated. “No wonder Snake can’t resist you.” She said, but did not turn. She few airborne for hours trying to contact Snake every now and then.
Hal sighed and stayed quiet the whole time they flew
“He’s not responding. She said, giving up and landing on a pad in an island. The place had a group of wooden houses and some stands where they sold seafood. “Here we are.”
Hal sat up and unbuckled himself. "Where are we..?"
“Same archipelago you guys where in when you called me” She said with a smile. “I’ll try to contact Snake and get him, just try to fair without him ok?” She asked opening the doors for him. “I’ll show you where you can stay.”
Hal followed her and nodded. "Ok."
She lead him over to one of these houses and turned on the lights. She pointed at the living room with the TV, kitchen, bathroom and room. “I’ll be up in the plane if you need me, circling the place and all, same frequency.” She said, signaling that she was putting the keys on a table for him and turned to leave.
"Thanks.." Hal said softly as he stood in the room.
The pilot leaped to her plane and turned on the engines again. The flight back was going to be a long one but she spent the time necessary to get there. However she was once again disappointed as she ended up sleeping twelve hours in the same airport again.
Hal tried his best to contact Snake as well while he stayed put.
“I knew she’d take you here” he said, sitting on the long chair facing the TV and bandaged from various places again. There was that toddler toying around with the pillows on it.
Hal turned around and looked. "H..How did you get here??"
“You guys left without me I had to kidnap a plane and it was a very long and painful story filled with bullets and stuff you don’t want to hear about. Now where is that witch; I’m going to kill her.” He said simply.
Hal rushed over and sat next to him. "you weren't back for a while..I wanted to stay but she insisted on leaving..." he said glomping him tightly.
“I’m going to disappear more often if it makes you hold me like this.” He said, grinning at Hal as he didn’t remember being so happy to see someone before. It was making his chest hurt to top it, the joy. The toddler stopped playing with the pillow and she looked at them strange.
Hal laughed and looked down at her. "So this must be Olga's daughter." he said smiling.
She looked at the stranger and eventually smiled as he had a nicer voice then the mean man that kidnapped her. “She doesn’t like me, and she refuses to talk.” Snake cleared up.
Hal giggled and looked back at her. "So can you tell me your name?"
She backed away a little, but looked at Snake as if he was going to hurt her. “Sunny” she said absently as if she was trying to please Hal while she looked at Snake.
Hal smiled and patted her head. "Don't mind him he's hard on the outside but soft on the inside." he said nodding to Snake
She looked at Snake suspiciously then walked over to Hal as if Snake was going to pounce and grab her. “Like a cockroach” she mumbled.
Hal blinked and picked her up. "kinda but less crunchy." he whispered to her with a giggle
“I don’t believe you, squish him!” she said, trying to win Hal’s good side. Snake had relaxed to the chair ignoring her and waiting for their missing crazy pilot.
Hal laughed and shook his head. "No we should let him be for now. You hungry?" he asked
She nodded vigorously, that kind of nod children gave you because they didn’t think about where you got the food from.
"Snake what should I give her?" Hal asked picking Sunny up and walking towards the kitchen
“Don’t give her the sandwiches and she should be fine, I think they’re a century old” he said, followed by an “Ew!” from the girl.
Hal laughed and nodded. "That's right. eww!" he said tickling her. He set her on the counter and rummaged through the fridge and pantry, ending up with a bag of chips and juice. "looks like she needs to start shopping.."
An alarm alerted Snake at once at that. One, Hal’s looking to give her a name, two, he’s feeding her… “Hal we’re turning her over to the Russian government… right?” he asked getting up and giving him a worried look. She leaped out of the counter at the way Snake approached her and hid behind the scientist.
Hal opened and handed her the chips. "If that's what you think is best.." he shrugged. He put the straw in the juice box and handed it to Sunny.
“Well that is unless they report us for handing her over.” He said honestly. At least he could relax about that. Now to get back on the track for Ocelot’s trail. He had the cooperation from the nice sewer lady and now he knew what Ocelot was hiding in the apartment. The girl ignored what he was saying in favor for the food.
Hal looked at him. "What else did you find?" he asked knowing that look. "Did you figure out why they kidnapped me?"
“Apparently they are using ray constantly but rex is still around. They think you’ll use it against them or something like that. That or they want it for their own.” He asked.
Hal nodded. "Good I thought it was something worse.." he replied. "Like testing a new hallucinigen on me or something like FOXDIE.."
Why did Hal have to remind him of his short lifespan? Thankfully a very angry pilot came in and Hal’s hands where occupied with Sunny panicking since the nice lady came in simply to beat the crap out of Snake for making her worry like that.
Hal went to the couch to calm Sunny down. "It's ok..." he said rubbing her back.
“Where’d that come from?” She asked pointing at the girl who was cowering behind Hal. Snake didn’t like that but he remained silent.
"Please stop yelling you're scaring her.." Hal said holding her protectively.
“I’m not yelling I’m asking.” She said, looking around Hal and reaching to grab the girl from him. Once she’d successfully done that she held her there to take a look. “Pretty cool, Snake, can’t be yours.” She said to the whimpering kid. Snake just blinked at her. “She’s not mine.” He said, as if she was missing an ear.
"Hey!" Hal said clenching his fists. "You're scaring her can't you see that?!" he added hearing Sunny whimpering. He felt some strange need to protect her.
Why did Snake feel he heard barking? He went to the pilot and smiled at her while pushing her wrists down, eventually she placed the girl on the floor who automatically ended up hugging Hal’s leg. “Snake, come on, I was just making friends with the kid.” She said smiling at him. “You left him worried on that plane” she added walking outside. The girl looked at him as if she just met him, convinced he was a real python.
Hal bent down and picked her up watching the woman leave.
“A snake!” Sunny told Hal excitedly as if he hadn’t known either. “That’s got scales on the outside and squishy on the inside, right?” She said feeling she nailed a really difficult puzzle. “And it’s not as crunchy as a cockroach!”
Hal laughed and gave her a nod. "Close." he said walking over and standing beside Snake. "I really was worried about you..." he said looking at him.
“I know” he said, wrapping an arm around the techie. However he pulled away once the girl remembered he’d kidnapped her and tried staying away from ‘the snake thing’. She looked at him as if trying to figure out what he was.
"Snake please make peace with her." Hal laughed. "Sunny he's not going to hurt you." he said to her with a gentle smile
“He stole me!” she said as if Hal had no idea. Snake grinned and agreed with her. “You don’t make peace with someone from night to morning, Hal, let her figure out that I’m not going to bite her.” He said, grinning at her to show all his teeth; to which she surprisingly giggled.
"He stole you from the bad people." Hal said as he walked with her to the couch. He sat down and smiled at her. "So he's a good guy."
She leaned to Hal’s ear so that Snake wouldn’t hear. Maybe it was not ethical to put in practice a long earshot for a child but Snake closed his eyes and diverted his hearing range to her. “He killed someone” she told him as if he didn’t know. Then she nodded as if she’d just broken the news to him. “I’ve killed armies.” Snake tactlessly corrected her, earning him a look of horror.
Hal hit Snake playfully. "Like I said, 'he's one of the good guys.'" he said laying his head on Snake's shoulder.
“He’s going to eat you and digest you whole!” She warned Hal. Snake grinned and opened his mouth really big in Hal’s direction. Sunny shrieked in surprise that it was true. However she was understanding that Hal and the snake thingie where friends.
Hal laughed and looked at Snake. He looked at Sunny with his head still on Snake's shoulder.
Sunny pet Snake on the head as if he where a large serpent and concluded: “It’s a pet snake” she said, then trying to climb down from Hal’s arms to play and also to escape Snake’s aggravated stare. “I’m nobody’s pet…” he mumbled.
Hal set her on the floor. "not even mine?" he asked jokingly as he poked him playfully.
“Watch what you say, that depends on how you mean that, now if that’s an euphemism…” he said grinning. “Then I’m your snake, yes.” He said, grinning at him and coming closer to the man in a pace that did make him look like the aforementioned predator. Sunny blinked at the word ‘euphemism’ but she was now convinced she knew what Snake was. And since she had nothing to fear from Hal’s pet then she felt comfortable enough to play.
“Otacon do as I say, she’ll come get me” he said, trying to avoid the men at all costs. He was already halfway under the bed.
