Chapter Six

Lina was terrified. She fought the big blue troll with all her might, and he had held her down without any effort at all. She felt so weak and helpless. She had almost soiled herself when he said something to the big wolf, afraid that he had told the wolf to eat her. Instead the the wolf sat on her, nearly crushing the air out of her lungs. She lay very still after that, for fear that the troll's pet might bite her head clean off of her shoulders if she moved again. She at least had some satisfaction that she had caused the big brute some pain before he had subdued her. But it still felt like a hollow victory, considering his sheer size and strength. The troll went and grabbed something from his pack and left the cave grumbling in his strange language.

Just when she thought that her legs were going to lose their feeling forever, the troll came back with a fresh bandage around the hand she had cut and barked an order to the wolf. The animal got up off of her and moved to lay next to the opposite wall of the cave. Just when she was sure that the troll was going to finish her off, he surprised her by throwing something made of linen at her lap. She looked down and realized it was a shirt. Not knowing what he wanted from her, she didn't move. He said something in his language to her, and then looked to be waiting for her to do something. Seeming to realize that she didn't know what he wanted, he spoke again. Repeating what he said before and then motioning her to put on the shirt. She put it on quickly, pulling it down over her knees, embarrassed by her nudity. It looked well worn and was many sizes too big for her, but she was covered, and she felt a little better about her situation.

The troll spoke softly to her again and reached for his gun. Thinking that this was it and that he was going to kill her now, for all the trouble that she caused, she was surprised when he just left her sitting there and left the cave. Thinking that this was going to be her chance to escape, she had forgotten about the wolf resting on the other side of the cave.

She had almost made it to the cave's entrance, when the big wolf jumped in front of her and laid his big body across the mouth of the cave. Her escape was impossible with the big stupid animal in the way. So she decided to use her time wisely and looked around for something that she might be able to use as a weapon, for when she tried to escape again. But much to her dismay, there was nothing in sight that could be used as a weapon. Even though the fever had broke she was still exhausted, so Lina sat back down on the bedroll and awaited her fate. She knew that it was just a matter of time before the troll either killed her or turner her back over to the horde group that had killed her family. Feeling overwhelmed and still a little sick, Lina laid down and cried. She cried for the loss of her father and little brother, and she cried in self pity. Lina just could not see a way out of her present situation, and so cried herself to sleep.

The wolf, Tibol, saw the girl had fallen asleep, but was still crying even in her sleep, and being an unusually gentle creature at heart, he wanted to comfort the crying girl. He crawled over on his belly and laid down beside her to offer warmth and solace. Gently he licked her face, and rested his muzzle on her chest, waiting for his master to come back.

Zaba didn't have any luck finding the boar that he had seen earlier that day, but he did find a small herd of deer. He took aim at a doe that didn't have a fawn and shot her cleanly though the neck. He would harvest the skin later, knowing that he would be able to make a nice pair of sandals with it for the girls little feet. Thinking of making something for her made him think of their encounter earlier.

When he thought of her, he remembered how soft her skin looked and had felt under his hand while he held her down. It stirred something strange in himself that he wasn't sure he wanted to examine. Then he remembered the way she looked at him when he realized that she was awake. It was like she was looking at a monster. Zaba knew that he didn't like that look. If she continued to think of him as a monster, he would never be able to get her to teach him to speak her language. He was going to have to treat her a little more delicately from now on.

With that thought, Zaba returned to the cave to prepare the evening meal. He arrived at the cave and saw that the fire had been doused by the soup, so the cave was dark inside. Using his dark vision, Zaba saw that the girl was still in the cave, and also that Tibol was cuddled with her. She looked so small sleeping next to the big wolf. Very small and fragile. He wondered how she would even survive in this world, without someone to protect her any longer. Zaba dropped the deer carcass on the floor of the cave and dropped his pack and gun down beside it.

Seeing that his master was back, Tibol rose from the caves floor and went to lick his master's hand to welcome him back. Zaba gave the big wolf a loving scratch behind one of his ears. Thinking that she was asleep, Zaba let Tibol go with him to gather the wood.

Lina had awoke when the troll came back. She had heard him drop something on the floor, but didn't dare move, because the wolf had his head on her chest. She was afraid that trouble would start again if she moved

She breathed more easily when the troll's pet got up off of her and went to greet her captor. Pretending to still be asleep, Lina laid waiting for an opportunity to try to run again, which presented itself when the troll and his pet both left the cave. She assumed that he was out looking for firewood, to cook whatever it was that he brought back with him and thought that she was still asleep. Taking the opportunity that was present to her, she gathered her nerve and crept towards the mouth of the cave.

She saw that he was off to the left of the cave and that she would have a clear escape if she could get across the pond without him or the wolf noticing her. She tiptoed across to the pond and as quietly as she could entered the water. Feeling around with her feet, she looked for places to step that she wouldn't slip and fall completely into the water before she wanted to. She was almost out to her breasts in the water, when she heard a large splash behind her. She whipped her head around and saw the troll bearing down on her. "Not again!" she thought as she dove into the water. She was a good swimmer, so she hoped that she would be able to get away from him, but he was faster than she was and caught her easily

Grabbing her from behind again, the troll circled his arms around the squirming slip of a girl and carried her back to the cave. "I'm going to have to tie this slippery little one to a post to keep her from escaping!" Zaba thought to himself. He was starting to doubt his plan to keep the girl as a teacher, and was starting to think that he should just wash his hands of her.

Once he reached the cave again he tossed her down onto the bedroll for the fourth time that day. Standing over her shaking form Zaba did feel a little pity for the girl. He wished that he could tell her what he wanted from her, that he really didn't want to hurt her, but was unable to. He built a fire and tied a line of rope from one wall of the cave to the other.

Turning back to her, he pulled her up by her shoulders to her feet, feeling how small and frail she was under the now wet shirt that he gave her earlier. He grabbed the shirt at the bottom and quickly pulled it over her head, before she could make a fuss. Then taking a bolt of silk cloth he had found, he dried her hair and shoulders. Getting the hint that he wanted her to dry off she took the bolt of cloth from him and started to dry herself off.

While she dried herself, he took off his leather armour and the shirt that he was wearing. He nearly laughed out loud when he saw her eyes grow wide. He could see the gears turning in that pretty little head of hers and knew that she was thinking that he was going to rape her. Zaba was tempted to play with her a little. If only to scare her a little for all the trouble she caused him that day. But it was late and he needed sleep. He turned around and took off the rest of his clothes and hung them on a line he had tied up earlier, close to the fire. He then picked up her wet shirt and hung it too by the fire to dry.

Turning back to her again , he had some rope which he tied around her waist very securely, and tied the other end to his ankle. There was not going to be anymore escaping today. Too tired now to bother cooking, Zaba forced the girl to lay down on the bed roll and aid down with her. He pulled the blanket over them both and through an arm a cross her waist for good measure. Feeling her lay there stiff and waiting for him to pounce, he drew a gentle hand over her eyes, trying to convey that he wanted her to go to sleep. She seemed to get the hint and closed her eyes, but she remained stiff.

Feeling confident that she wouldn't escape again that night, Zaba relaxed a little and started to drift off. He knew that Tibol would keep watch through the night. Reflexively he drew her in closer to himself, reveling in the soft, comforting feel of the small body next to him, and he fell asleep.
