Chapter Five
By day three of her capture, Lina finally woke up without the blurriness that she had with the fever. Her fever had broke and she sat up to look around the small cave that she had hidden in. She saw a merry little fire, with a cooking pot on a frame above it, in the entrance to the cave. She was sure that she could smell Murloc Fin soup boiling away in it. Murloc Fin Soup wasn't her favorite, but after having so little to eat over the last few days, smelled like ambrosia to her food-deprived body. For as hard as they tried, her rescuer hadn't been able to get her to eat much while she was sick.
Noticing that she was still naked under the blanket, Lina, looked around for whoever had been taking care of her. Seeing that no one was around she stood up and wrapped the blanket around her like she would have wrapped a towel around herself after a bath. She walked over to the pot and lifted the lid to examine the contents of the soup. "Yep, Murloc Fin Soup." she paused to look for a bowl, " Oh well. Beggars can't be choosers."
Finding a bowl and a spoon she dished herself up some of the fragrant soup and sat to eat it. Noticing a loaf of Mulgore Spiced Bread close by, she tore a piece of it off and dipped the bread into the broth to soak up some of the juices. After the first bite, Lina was in heaven. Her mouth watered and she scarfed down the soup and bread. She was reaching for a second helping when she heard noises outside the cave. Getting up to investigate, Lina was horrified to see that there was a great wolf splashing about in the pond. She froze in fright and the bowl dropped from her lifeless hands, clattering on the stone floor of the cave, drawing the wolf's attention. She then heard a male voice speaking in what sounded like the troll language. She discerned that the male voice was speaking to the wolf, and then she saw who the voice belonged to. It was a very tall blue troll, with a tall black mo hawk, that had a blue sheen to it. He also had strange markings on his face. And she could see that he had seen her. She turned and ran back into the cave.
Panicking, Lina searched the cave for anything that might be used as a weapon. She found a pile of leathers on the floor and beside them was a skinning knife. She knew it wasn't much but it would have to do. She would not be taken captive again. Moving to the back of the cave she tried to hide as best as she could. She hoped that whoever was outside of the cave would either think she slipped out, but prepared herself to run if she had to.
Zaba saw the girl eating long before she realized there was someone outside the cave. She was eating like a man who hadn't seen a meal in over a month. He was pleased to see her up and about on her own. That meant that they would be able to head to more troll-friendly territory soon, but first he would have to make her some clothing from the leather that he had collected over the last two days. Tibol had come to him while he was studying the girl, with a large stick hoping to play. Absentmindedly, Zaba threw the stick into the pond, hoping that that would appease the big wolf for now. Tibol happily ran after the stick and made a huge racket, splashing in the water, startling the girl.
He could see that she was panicked, and he wanted Tibol to stop being so loud. He needed the girl's mind in teaching order, so that he could learn from her. He couldn't do that if she was a quivering mess from an overload of fear. "Tibol, here boy! Stop that splashing. You'll scare our guest!" Zaba spoke firmly to the big wolf. Turning back to the cave, he couldn't see her anymore. Wondering where she had gone to, he went to the cave to search for her.
She couldn't possibly have known about trolls' excellent dark vision, because he saw her huddled in the far end of the cave. He could see that she was trying to not be found. "Come out girl, I know you are there and there is no use hiding." he said as gently as he could, trying not to scare her anymore then he knew she was already. Edging slowly towards her, he wanted to allow her time to got used to his presence. He could see her eyes were wild with fright and she was trembling very badly. Once he was close enough to her to reach out and touch her, he slowly made to take her by the arm and gently draw her out of the corner. He didn't anticipate the skinning knife.
Zaba felt a sharp searing pain along the back of his hand. Looking to see what struck his hand, he saw blood oozing out across his knuckles. Growling past the pain and not having the patience to deal with the wild girl, Zaba grabbed her more forcefully then he had wanted to in the beginning. Plucking the skinning knife out of her hand easily, and dumping her onto the bed roll. He tucked the knife back in his belt and turned to the girl. She was trying to run for the cave's mouth when he caught up with her and tossed her back on the bed roll. She struggled some more, squirming away and almost making it to the mouth of the cave again, but Zaba was too quick for her. He grabbed around her belly from behind and she kicked out with her feet, knocking the pot of soup over with her attempts to kick him. He threw her on the bed roll again, pinning her down with ease. She continued to struggle like a wild animal caught in a trap.
"SIT STILL!" he roared at her, but seeing that she wasn't going to sit still he called Tibol into the cave. "Tibol, sit on her and don't her her escape!" The big wolf, easily plopped his strongly muscled body down on her lap and growled at her whenever she tried to move. The girl soon got the hint and stopped struggling under the big dog.
Zaba then went to his pack, dragging out his first-aid kit, and stormed outside to clean the wound in the pond water. He could see that she hadn't cut him too deeply, but put some salve and a heavy linen bandage on the wound to avoid infection. "Stupid girl! This is the thanks that I get after saving your weak little ass!" he yelled to her in the cave. Zaba fumed for a couple of minutes and after his temper cooled off, he went back inside to check on the girl again. Grabbing his pack on the way in the cave, he reached inside for an old shirt of his, so give to her to wear, instead of the blanket that had fallen off in their struggle. It would be many sizes too big for her, but was soft and would afford her some modesty while he continued to make her new clothes.
"Tibol, get up boy." Zaba said to his animal friend. After the wolf got up, he tossed the shirt at the naked girl. "Put that on." he said to her. But when he saw that she clearly didn't understand his ancestors' language, he said it again, but mimed putting on a shirt as well, in hopes that she was bright enough to understand what he wanted of her. The blanket would be no good for her to run around in while he was still making clothes for her, and her nakedness would be too distracting to him. She was a beautiful distraction, but a distraction nonetheless. Just when he thought that she was too stupid to understand what he wanted of her, she pulled the shirt over her head quickly, drawing the shirttails over her knees.
Happy that he wasn't going to have to get too rough with her, Zaba smiled around his tusks. He said to the girl, "That wasn't so bad, now was it girly?" Turning to Tibol, "Watch her boy. Don't let her leave the cave. I'll be back with some meat for supper soon." Grabbing his gun, he turned to go hunt some boar that he saw earlier that morning. Stopping to speak quietly to the girl, Zaba said, "You stay put, girly." He spoke to her even though he knew she couldn't understand. "I have to go hunt for supper now that you've gone and dumped the soup pot and wasted perfectly good Murloc Fin Soup." Zaba turned and left the cave to do his hunting.
