~Chapter 5 “Dimitri’s Agenda”
A rather enraged echidna stormed down one of the main halls of the airship. Every echidna knew just by his body language to get out of the way or pay the consequences. There was a meeting requested by the Great Lord Dimitri himself, and all of the upper members of the Legion were expected to attend. It was set up on such short notice that many of the officers had to excuse their soldiers and scientists from their duties for the rest of the afternoon. Time for slacking off wasn’t a main option to their lifestyle, and it annoyed the echidna that he would have to miss out on all the fun. He loathed having so much responsibility, but it was the only way in his society to get any sort of real benefit. He knew what the Grandmaster had requested his presence for, and he was not at all pleased.
The middle-age echidna tried his best to calm down before proceeding to enter the meeting room, but failed rather miserably at it. He stumbled to punch in a rather elaborate code next to the door and then scanned his hand on a panel. The door slid open to reveal everyone about ready to take his or her seat. He sighed in relief and tried to slip in the room without being noticed to find his place.
Suddenly, the back door of the room opened revealing their second-in-command, Kommisar. Everyone knew that her real name was Lien-Da, but nobody dared to speak it unless they wanted a serious flogging by her own whip. Only family and personal friends were allowed to call her by name. He guessed she decided to go along with that because she thought it gave her a feeling of power. Beside her was their old, frail, and yet strong in spirit Grandmaster, Lord Dimitri. Everyone gave a salute as he entered the room. It was quite an honor to be in the company of such a living legend. As soon as Dimitri sat down at the head of the table everyone removed their hoods to greet each other and had a seat. Everyone of course except him. He’d rather be tortured to death than be embarrassed by the status of his newly distorted face.
Kommisar gawked at him in full rage rising from the table, “Remove your hood!” It was a rather disrespectful course of action to conceal ones face at a gathering, and he shuddered at the fact that he’d be severely punished for his stupidity later. He did not hesitate to follow her command this time.
Rykor removed his hood to reveal a rather gruesome sight. One of his eyes was pitch black, there were several cuts and bruises on various places that couldn’t be covered up with bandages, and the whole bottom left side of his face was swollen blue! Several of the officers cringed at the site, but the damages weren’t bad enough to need to fix up with metallic enhancements.
“What in the hell happened to you, Sergeant?!” one of the soldiers asked curiously.
Rykor saw a very faint grin on the person across from him, and growled under his breath when he noticed who it was. ‘Xenin…’ The two of them used to be pretty good friends growing up, which transformed into a kind of bitter rivalry as they trained together. They were very equally matched when it came to every level of combat. At least until his accident a few years ago, and he volunteered to go through one of the newer metallic enhancement operations as an experiment. Luckily for him he survived, and became one of the Legion’s greatest top fighters of all time. The guy was almost invincible, and his hatred for him only deepened when Xenin let all this attention go to his head. “I’m surprised at you, Doctor. Why I thought the news might have made it to everybody by now. To put it bluntly, Rykor got totally PWNED by the Guardian!” Several of the Legionnaires burst out laughing at Xenin’s explanation. It was enough to get his blood boiling. He’d love to make Xenin’s face even bluer than his was now if it wasn’t for the fact that he could very easily overpower him.
“Everyone, please…” Dimitri commanded. They all immediately shut up to hear what Dimitri had to say. “Rykor, have a seat before you make an even bigger spectacle of yourself.”
Rykor bowed in deep respect for his elder. “With all due respect, my Lord. I’d like permission to leave my hood up during this meeting.”
“Your request is denied. Sit down,” Lien-Da spat back out at him coldly.
Rykor took his seat in a shocked state of humiliation. He deserved that. He should have followed protocol first, and then ask for his request. Something told him he was being made an example for the rest of group.
The room was in dead silence after that as the group quickly focused their attention towards their leader. “I know that you’ve all heard rumors about the Guardian, but that’s only part of the reason why I’ve brought you all together today. There’s been a change of plans on conquering Angel Island.”
“Grandfather, you must be joking!?” Lien-Da cried out in frustration. The other Legionnaires were alarmed, because apparently this was a news flash to her as well.
“I’m dead serious, Lien-Da. If you would know just how capable Knuckles is right now there is no guarantee that we can just go inhabit Echidnapolis by bruit force alone. The boy is unimaginatively powerful, and probably even more so than in my own glory days. I’ve decided that the best way to get what we want is to conquer from within...”
“I don’t quite follow what you mean, Grandfather…”
Dimitri smirked. Lien-Da was always the one to use strength over tactics. She apparently had much more to learn before he allowed her access to the Grandmaster title. “Well, we simply can’t overpower a living chaos emerald, so why not embrace it instead? If we show Knuckles the truth about technology and his exiled ancestors, his hatred will vanish into understanding. Ignorance into wisdom, and with that he can persuade his society into a new form of life for his people and for our own. His trust is our key to victory!” Several Legionnaires nearly fell out of their seats with that statement, including Lien-Da, while many others displayed a huge grin at the brilliant idea!
“But what if his society takes him for a traitor?! Then what, Grandfather? Or the Brotherhood take it upon themselves to banish us again for his lack of experience?” she nearly screamed. “I cannot bare the idea of returning to the twilight zone just for the opinions of a few!”
“I didn’t say this plan didn’t come without the risks. We just have to hope that things work out, or we deal with the problem now and move on. I find Knuckles a much more valuable asset to our cause than killing him would be, or perhaps you would prefer to do the dirty deed yourself. I doubt that.”
Lien-Da bit her lip in aggravation on what to say about that, but deep down she didn’t want to see Knuckles become the living legend and hero of the Dark Legion. She also didn’t like the idea of Julie-Su being right beside him rubbing it in her face either. It should be her moment of glory with her soldiers and not the enemy’s.
Dimitri took a look around the room in a bit of dismay. He let out a small sigh as he noticed a few doubtful and confused expressions he was receiving about the plan. “Since it has come to my attention that this has become a bi-polarized issue, let’s have a vote to decide the matter! Just say ‘Aye’ for peace with my brethren or ‘Nay’ for his death. He cued off ‘Aye!’ and pointed toward Lien-Da besides him to continue the vote around the table. His technical Legionnaire kept a tally on the screen, but things were coming out rather close. He wasn’t surprised that Rykor and Granddaughter had voted against him for Knuckles’ death, but was rather touched at all the good responses he was getting after a lot of negative votes. Then it all came down to a tiebreaker, and just at the end of the line sat Xenin with his arms crossed and a huge bellowing grin on his face. He loved being the center of attention after all.
Xenin stood up to face the small crowd that had gathered, “It appears that the fate of the Legion rests within my hands,” he guffawed, ”and although my master’s plan may have its flaws I have always been one to take risks! Whether Knuckles and Julie-Su are my enemies or companions that is for Dimitri to decide. That is why I vote ‘Aye!” Dimitri looked over and almost gave him a grateful look for supporting him, because he had never had the best of luck with council voting.
“Good!” Dimitri chimed in, “Now that it has been settled out I’m going to lay down a few rules that are to be relayed to all civilians and soldiers. There is to be no one to harass Knuckles while he’s here aboard the airship like there was earlier today,” he accusingly glared at Rykor. “He is our honored guest and must be treated like one of our own kin. Anything he suggests must be taken into account. As for his activities, I will set up a few events and meetings with each of you to be held though out the month. As for Julie-Su,” he laughed rather suggestively and nearly all the legionnaires in the room did a double take in surprise, “it appears the only reason she decided to leave us in the first place was because she was heavily under the influence of the soultouch. Things like this happen for a reason. In fact, its our greatest advantage over Knuckles incase things get out of hand. She is no longer a traitor in my eyes but a great innovator, and for that I grant her a full pardon. Speaking of which, I believe her memory files are still lying around in the databanks aren’t they?” he asked.
Dr. Finitevus nodded in agreement to his master’s request, “I can go fetch them for you once the meeting is over, my Lord!”
“Excellent! You can hand a copy over to Kommissar once you’ve achieved them! You can set up the appointment for that can’t you, my dear?”
Lien-Da was beyond pissed off from losing the vote, but making him do anything that was related to nice for her sister was beyond the question! Especially about giving Julie-Su the rights to the memories that contained her father, something Lien-Da had always wanted to keep between Kragok and herself. She loathed the fact that her grandfather had put her on the spot like this, and growled under her breath just a bit before replying half heartedly, “Yes, sir.”
“I will inform you on meeting up with Knuckles later on, until then this meeting is augured!” most of the crowd quickly got up to jabber about and get back to their duties, but Dimitri noticed that Rykor was a bit slow to get up and converse. He motioned with his arm towards him and said in a low voice, “Not you Rykor, I’d like to speak with you after everyone leaves.”
The Grandmaster waited patiently until everyone left the room with just Rykor and Lien-Da as witness to the events about to unfold. Dimitri got up and stormed over to Rykor in pure rage! His victim didn’t dare look up in fear of the reaction he would get from his master. Dimitri reached over with his metallic claw-like hands, gripped his robe tightly and flung him onto the ground! Rykor yelped in surprise at how powerful his master was even in his brittle state, and out of the corner of his eye saw a rather horrified Lien-Da. It didn’t last long though because Dimitri was on top of him within seconds before he could attempt to get away. He gripped his shoulders and dragged him up against the wall to glare face-to-face. “You idiot! Do you realize what you could have done!?” he smacked Rykor rather hard on his already sore muzzle and cried out in agony, tears forming and rolling down the sides of his cheeks from torment and humiliation.
“I thought I was doing it for your best interests, sir!”
“That’s a lie and you know it! While you were taunting Julie-Su at your own benefit, Knuckles could have possibly wiped us out in pure rage! He’s not experienced enough to handle his powers yet, and especially not in the emotional state he was in!” he spat back gripping even tighter. “I know you had a thing for her in the past, but it makes me wonder how many other underage girls you tried to seduce, Sergeant?” Dimitri saw Rykor’s face twinge in horror at being found out, “I take that as a confession then,” and smacked him hard against the face for the second time. “I’m demoting you, soldier. Don’t show up to work after this, because you’ll never work with those troops again.” He dropped the ex-sergeant’s limp body to the floor, and turned away to walk toward the door. “Take out the trash, Lien-Da, and make sure he’s assigned scrub work,” and stormed out of the room.
Lien-Da looked down at the pitiful site before her. Rykor had his hands over his head as if trying to fool himself that this was all a bad dream. The man’s career was ruined all within a day, but she knew that it wasn’t just the show he put off with Knuckles that caused that. Suddenly, quite an evil thought crept into her mind, and why not? Misery always loves company…
“There are so many things worse than death, Rykor” she grinned sinisterly.
“What do you mean..?” Rykor looked up at her slowly, eyes swollen and red.
“You want revenge against Knuckles don’t you?” He nodded. “Well that’s too bad because we can’t kill him without committing treason, but there is plenty more ways to destroy an echidna.”
“I’m listening,” he rose to his feet and glanced at Lien-Da with curiosity at the offer, and this was something he couldn’t turn down so easily.
“Take Julie-Su for instance,” Rykor’s eyes widened at the suggestion and Lien-Da knew she had pressed the right button, “let’s just say you can let your desires run wild by the end of this” and winked at him.
Rykor then mellowed out with the biggest provocative grin on his face. “Tell me what I have to do.”
“With pleasure!”
