Chapter 5
"What's wrong? You've been awfully quiet all day. To be exact, you've been quiet the whole week." Kairi asked Sora, as they made their way downstairs from Kairi's room. Sora took his raincoat from the coat-rack and got dressed. He pulled the hood on and turned around to face the brunette girl.
"It's just that..." Sora mumbled.
"It's because of Riku, right?" Kairi asked, raising her brows as she met Sora's eyes. "I know, we haven't seen him in a week. I bet his dad won't let him come out. That's so wrong."
"Yeah." Sora agreed with Kairi. "But this is nothing new. Riku's dad is pretty strict. Remember when we were younger, we got into trouble for ruining all the fishing nets? Well, you, me and Tidus only got yelled at, but Riku had to stay indoors for two whole weeks"
"Well, they were his dad's fishing nets..." Kairi snickered, then noticed the gloomy look on her friend's face.
"I miss Riku." Sora spoke with a low voice. Kairi placed her hand on Sora's shoulder and gave it a light squeeze.
"Of course you do. Riku is your best friend... But you have me too, Sora! You do care about me, right?" the girl laughed nervously, secretly wanting to know if Sora shared her feelings. The brunette boy looked a bit surprised at first, but then joined Kairi's laughter.
"Of course I do. You're my good friend, Kairi." Sora told girlgirl, turning around to open the front door, missing the disappointed look on Kairi's face.
'Just a good friend, eh?'
"Hey it's not raining anymore!" Sora exclaimed, looking happy for a change. He pulled the hood of his raincoat off and stepped out to the yard. Kairi came to stand in the doorway to say good bye.
"Well, good night, Sora." the girl waved her hand, looking at Sora's retreating back. She glanced up to the darkening sky, noting the sun had already set. "I'll see you tomorrow then..."
"Bye, Kairi!" came Sora's reply as he was already climbing over the old wooden fence that separated their houses. Sora landed on his own backyard, avoiding his mom's rose-bushes just barely. Before going in, he walked over to the front gate and leaned against it to see Riku's house at the end of the small road. 'When will I see you again, Riku?' Sora made his way to the porch. The night air was a bit dank and cold, causing shivers to run through Sora's body.
"Man I'm hungry! I hope mom's made something to eat." he said out loud and stepped in. Sora kicked his booff off and threw the raincoat on the floor. It was dark, so he turned the hall lights on.
"Mom, I'm home!" Sora called and made his way into the small kitchen. "And I'm hungry! Mom?" The whole house was dark and quiet. Sora soon realized there was no one else at home. "Huh? Where is she?" he checked the fridge and finally saw a note on the door.
Sora! I'm at Grandma's house. She hurt her leg, so I'll be taking care of her for tonight. I'll be back tomorrow morning. I know you can take care of yourself for one night. And remember to EAT! I made your favorite! And don't stay up late!
-Mom
Sora just shrugged and threw the note from his hands. He opened the fridge and examined its contents. He noticed a plate, covered with a foil. Sora took the plate in his hand and put it on the table. He removed its covers and immediately held his nose.
"Oh man! Disgusting! What did she mean by 'I made your favorite'!! I hate this stuff..." Sora groaned and pushed away the plate, filled with fried vendace and some indefinable vegetables. He slouched away from the kitchen and sat down on the staircase. The brunette boy felt depressed. "I'm hungry, there's nothing to eat and I miss Riku..." he sighed. After a whif sif sitting and sighing, Sora suddenly stood up, balling his fists, looking determined.
"I'm gonna go over there. I have to see him. Not even his old man can stop me! I'm not afraid of him." Sora said aloud and walked to the front door. As he reached for his shoe, Sora heard a noise, coming from upstairs. "That came from my room..." His blue eyes narrowed at first, but went wide as he realized something. "Maybe it's Riku! Maybe he sneaked out!" The spiky-haired boy dashed upstairs, almost tripping on the long carpet. He slowed down as he neared the door of his room. Slowly he stepped in and searched for the light switch with his left hand. As the room was filled with light, Sora let his eyes wander to the window, hoping to see his friend there. The expression on his face was a disappointed one, as Sora realised there was no one climbing in from the window, no one sitting on his bed. He sighed and walked over to the slightly opened window. He pushed the shutters open and leaned against the window ledge. Sora let his eyes wander around and enjoyed the cool nigh air. The sky was clear and filled with little twinkling stars for a change. Sora filled his lungs with the fresh air, then leaned back and closed the window. He turned around on his bed and squealed as he saw Riku, standing right in front of him.
"Aa-aaah!! God damn!!!" Sora almost fell down on the floor, holding his hand on his heaving chest.
"Hey! It's just me! Sora, calm down..." Riku grabbed Sora by his shoulders and held him in place. The younger boy blinked his eyes, trying to understand the situation. "Sorry... I didn't mean to scare you that bad." The silver-haired boy apologised, a smile on his lips.
"I-it was you! I knew I heard something!" Sora exclaimed, eyeing Riku from tip to toes. He didn't seem to be upset by the fact that Riku had almost scared him to death. The older boy gave Sora a nod, a smile on his lips. Riku almost fell down on his butt, when Sora suddenly jumped into his arms, forcing Riku to embrace him. "Whoah! Take it easy." the older boy chuckled as Sora twined his arms around Riku's waist.
"Riku..." Sora breathed into Riku's chest, giving the boy a tight squeeze. "Damn I missed you!" Riku made them sit down on Sora's bed and leaned back from the brunette boy's hug.
"I know. And don't you think I didn't miss you too, because I did."
For some time both of them just sat there quietly, staring at each other. Sora lowered his face, blushing. He hadn't seen Riku in a long time, so he felt a bit shy for some reason. Riku noticed this, and cupped Sora's chin gently, forcing him to look up.
"Sora, it's just me, there's no need to be shy." the older boy smiled. Sora was silent for a while, then narrowed his eyes.
"Where have you been, Riku? Why haven't we seen you in a week? I've been worried sick! And I've missed you and-"
"I know, Sora." Riku interrupted the brunette boy's flow of questions, placing a finger on Sora's lips. Slowly he pulled his hand back and lay down on the bed. "I'm gonna leave, Sora." Riku suddenly spoke. Sora frowned, not sure if he heard correctly. He crawled on top of Riku and met the older boy's eyes.
"What? What??" Sora exclaimed. "Riku, what do you mean? Leave? Where?" Riku turned his head and let his eyes wander down on the messy floor. "Where are you going to leave??" Sora repeated his question, feeling confused.
"Away from here. Away from dad..." the older boy whispered, his voice filled with determination.
"Away? Away from Destiny Islands? Away from me?"
"No! Not away from you, Sora. You're coming with me." Riku informed, meetinga'sa's worried eyes. "Just you and me, think about it."
Sora suddenly gripped Riku's shirt and shook the boy. "Riku! Stop! That's crazy! Where would we go? There's nothing out there, just sea..." the brunette boy sounded agitated. Riku sat up and pushed Sora aside.
"You're wrong. There is something out there. I'm sure of it." The silver-haired boy spoke and looked out of window. "There just has to be... has to be something more than Destiny Islands..."
"Riku..." Sora came to sit with the older boy. Riku turned his head down and met Sora's eyes. He noted the worried look on his friend's face and gave him a reassuring smile.
"Come on, Sora, it'll be fun! And we can always come back. It's like an adventure!" Riku coaxed, noting the glimpse of curiosity in Sora's eyes. "And it's not like we have to leave tonight." he whispered and finally pulled Sora into his arms. After a long moment of silence, Sora finally gave him a hesitant nod.
"O-okay..." he agreed. Riku held the younger boy tightly in his arms, feeling relieved and happy. Without any warning, he pulled Sora's body up into a kiss. Riku could feel the other boy was surprised from his sudden action. It took a while before he could feel Sora's tongue meet with his own. The kiss ended quickly and both leaned back. Sora gave Riku a seducing smile, or at least thought it was his seducing smile.
"Mom's at Granny's tonight... I'm home alone Riku." Sora whispered, sounding a bit shy. A mischievous smile spread on the older boy's lips as he heard Sora's words. Riku said nothing, but gave his answer by lowering Sora down on the bed and uniting their lips into another sweet kiss.
