Memories

It was bizarre remembering in a dream. It wasn’t as solid and confined as the normal memories, Viconia could soar free of her perspective and slip into anyone else’s and see a bit through their eyes. For only a bit, but it was none the less interesting. Viconia was no fool and knew what she saw and the thoughts that were running through any one of her adopted hosts was not what was exactly thought and what was truly seen, but merely her imagination filling in the holes.

So as her dark form streaked across the horizon, Viconia projected her will to a group of four heading her way. Two men and two women. Viconia stopped and gazed at the man who she would come to know as Kain. It was a shock to the true Viconia to see him without his godly aura, but seeing him like this also seemed to confirm her fears, the Lord of Murder had been regretting giving her the mission back at the palace.

Viconia’s consciousness hovered and watched the scene unfold. This was one of the memories that upset Viconia the most. Here she was completely at the mercy of a smelly human male and his band of adventurers, her fate not truly in her hands. The scene progressed till the end that was highlighted by how Kain easily dispatched the Flaming Fist mercenaries that had been the hottest on her trail.

The memory faded from her mind and then there was only darkness. Viconia continued to hover as she considered her options. How could a god seem so worried about sending a high priestess out to get him a name? The way he had said it was as if it wasn’t just a matter of gathering a think tank and picking one. The Lord of Murder had already tasked her and the rest of the priests to find him a name, so why would he claim to be sending her on a new mission?

Viconia decided she wasn’t getting anywhere and opted to have a little fun. Her mind began to wheel. She conjured up a wooded glade, and soon the sounds of the forest were humming throughout her mind and then he was there.

Slipping out of the third person, Viconia merged her mind with that of how she was at the time. Dagger hidden up her sleeve, she had just lured Kain away from the group to talk about something ‘privately’. He came into the clearing wearing only his dark green tunic and brown pantaloons and seemed to not have brought a weapon. Perfect.

“What is this about, we need to keep moving or…” Kain never had a chance to finish as Viconia lunged at him; the daggers tip aimed right at his heart. Viconia had done this before; she had almost perfected the art of stabbing someone in the heart. A talent that had allowed her to gain power over a rival very quickly. But not Kain.

He exploded into motion. First he sidestepped the thrust, followed by a slap to the hand holding the dagger. Though it did possess the power to knock the dagger out of her hand, it felt less like a blow and more like a gentle caress. Viconia grew incensed at how easily she had been handled, but the humiliation was made much worse be the gentleness of it all. Kain seemed to not have any aspirations of defeating Viconia, it was almost as if he thought that after the fight they both would return back to the group. This to Viconia was the ultimate insult for it reflected upon her badly. Here they were, in a fight to the death, and she was being bested by a guy who wasn’t playing to kill.

Viconia faked a lunge at the dagger on the ground as she slipped a throwing dagger from it's place on her belt. In one fluid motion the dagger was thrown right at Kain’s heart. Throughout it all Kain remained motionless, the dagger spinning toward his chest.

Viconia loved this memory because up to a certain point she was about to kill Kain. But the truth of the matter was clarified as a streak flow mere inches away from Kain’s body and took the dagger out of flight.

Out of the shadows around the glade stepped a woman, bow in hand.

“Imoen”, cried Viconia as she flew out of tent. She knew she couldn’t afford anymore sleep, she had an expedition to plan.
