The Test
Chapter Four: The Test
Doctor's offices were designed to make you, the patient, feel at home and comfortable. Not nail biting nervous, as Sora was. The said brunet sat on the cool rubber mat on the examination table, simply refusing to allow his lover to leave his side. All the while, he muttered under his breath while clutching his hands together, rocking back and forth, "I hate doctors. I hate doctors!"
The last time the brunet went to see his doctor it had been for his yearly flu shot. That pervious appoint weighed heavily on, not only his, but the rest of the staff of the doctor's office as well. Riku was just glad he had been busy that day, because hearing about it was painful enough.
But, the way the silver haired seventeen year old had figured it, the sooner his lover was diagnosed with a random stomach virus, the sooner he could get prescribed antibiotics and get his sick little butt home to recover and relax.
"The doctor is with another patient right now, he'll be with you in one moment." A nurse said, walking into the exam room Sora and Riku had been placed into wait for the doctor, "In the mean time, how about you tell me what's been bothering you." She asked, sitting at a chair in front of the computer, where she pulled up Sora's file.
"Well, for the past week I've been puking my guts out." Sora answered with a nod, deciding to get straight to the point as his lover shook his head slowly.
The nurse nodded, motioning Sora over to the scale, "Are there any other symptoms? Fever, aches, pains. Anything at all?" She asked, waiting for the brunet to take off his shoes before she took his weight, typing it in on the computer after she was finished.
Sora shook his head, stepping off the scale, "No...well, maybe cramps, but I figured that was normal with the puking." He said with a shrug.
"Geez, Sora...I told you to cut back on those sweets." Riku said playfully as he leaned over the brunet's shoulder to see the results, "You're going to get chunky if you keep pigging out like that."
Sora threw a glare over his shoulder, "For your information," He began, climbing back up on the table, “I lost weight.”
Riku blinked, “Did he mention mood swings?” He said, half teasing...half not so much. He had noticed lately that Sora was much easier to annoy and generally piss off.
The nurse shook her head, “Alright, you two just hold tight for a moment and the doctor will be in here to see you shortly.” She said before stepping out of the room, closing the door behind her.
“More like half an hour.” Riku snorted once the nurse had left the room. He slid his chair across the floor so that he was closer to his little brunet, “You should’ve puked on her shoes.”
“Actually, I don’t feel too bad right now.” Sora replied thoughtfully, leaning back on his hands as he looked down at his silver haired boyfriend, “I just hope they won’t need to take blood.”
Riku sighed heavily, setting a comforting hand on his lover’s knee, “If they do, they do.” He said, frowning lightly, “Just think about the nice warm bed waiting for us back at your house.”
Sora chuckled softly, though there wasn’t much humor or amusement behind it, “I suppose so.” He said, frowning, as good as that sounded...he still didn’t want blood to be taken.
“We should plan an overnighter at the hideout this weekend.” Riku suggested, definitely missing being able to hold his lover all night long. After all, the last time they camped out overnight, it had been nearly a month ago, “As long as you’re feeling better that is.”
“If a stomach virus is all it is, I should be fine after I get some antibiotics in me.” Sora said, the frown on his face deepening.
Riku tilted his head to the side, watching Sora closely, “What’s the matter?” He asked, his hand moving from the boy’s knee to his hand where he clasped it gently, running his thumb over the back of it.
“What if it’s not a stomach virus?” Sora asked softly, looking at Riku.
"You're just being stupid, it's not like you can get pregnant." Riku said. Of course that‘s all it was. A simple stomach virus that would go away with some pills or nasty tasting syrup. "Stop being so melodramatic. You'll be back to annoying the hell out of Tidus and Wakka again in no time."
Sora just stared at his lover, biting his lip. Riku’s words had done nothing to quell the impending sense of doom that he felt.
Then the door opened again, revealing his doctor and another nurse carrying a basket full of tubes and needles. And, that was what Sora was afraid of. The teen immediately perked up at the sight of the basket, but before he could express his displeasure, the doctor started talking.
"The nurse tells me that you're complaining of severe vomiting that's been going on for a week?" The Doctor said, checking his charts, "Hm, we'll run a few tests and sees what they tell us."
Riku winced at the mention of tests. He hated needles almost as much as his lover did and he knew Sora would likely panic and faint the moment he saw one. "Why do you have to run a test?" he asked the doctor, very concerned for the younger boy.
The Doctor looked at the silver headed teenager, "Well, we're going to check for a stomach virus and anything else that might happen to show up. There's several things that could be causing this and most of them require a simple blood test to find out." He said.
Sora paled at the mention of the words 'blood test', he laughed a high pitched breathy laugh, “Blood test...oh boy...” He said, looking over at his silver haired lover.
"You need to make sure he's lying down," Riku told the doctor, eying poor Sora. He'd gotten awfully pale at the mention of the blood test. "He has a tendency to pass out."
Wuss that he is. He added silently. Not that Riku could blame him. He disliked them too.
The Doctor nodded, "Oh yes, we know. We'll need several more nurses so he doesn't take my head off when I stick the needle in his arm." He said before walking out of the room to get said nurses.
Sora warily watched the remaining nurse ready the needle and tubes for his blood, “Sora, dear, we go through this every time you come!” She said, shaking her head, “You think you'd be over it.”
Sora pouted, wishing the nurse had left so he could make a run for it, but he knew his lover wouldn't allow that.
The Doctor returned a moment later, he looked straight at Riku, "You either help hold him down or wait outside...things could get nasty in here."
For one brief moment, Riku seriously considered bolting from the room, but he knew Sora would never forgive him for abandoning him. "I'll help..." he said softly, feeling slightly sick himself at the sight of the needle.
Sora frowned, staring up at his lover. He honestly looked like he was about to pass out, "Isn't there another way?" He whined, backing up lightly when a nurse grabbed his arm, but Riku held him against him.
The doctor shook his head, “Mr. Miyake, you ask that every time we try to take blood. The answer still hasn't changed and it isn't looking like it'll change anytime soon.” He said as he grabbed the boy's legs.
“Oh god...” Sora said weakly as he watched the nurse with the needle step closer to him, “I'm going to be sick...”
Lowering his voice for only Sora to hear, Riku whispered how much he loved Sora as he too watched the doctor. "I'll get you some donuts after we leave here. Deal?" Riku knew that Sora could never turn down the offer of sweets.
Sora's eyes immediately brightened, "Deal!" He cried, holding his arm out, "Hurry up~!" He whined. The promise of sweets his mother didn't allow him to have out weighting his fear.
The doctor stared at the brunet in shock as the nurse slipped the needle underneath Sora's skin and into a vein, “I'll have to remember that.” He said, shaking his head slowly.
"If there's one thing I know about my best friend it's that he can be bribed to do anything if there's a promise of sweets for him to do so," Riku couldn't help but chuckle at his lover's enthusiasm for donuts.
They filled two tubes with Sora's blood, all the while the brunet hummed impatiently, swinging his legs after the doctor was reassured he wouldn't be kicked.
"The tests should only take an hour or so, you're free to leave and come back or just hang around here." The doctor said as the nurse left the room with the tubes in tow, heading for the lab.
"It's up to you, Sora, whether we stay or leave," Riku told the younger boy. Personally, he would prefer to leave and not come back. "Either way, I need to call your mom at work and let her know what's going on."
"Can we leave now? There's a bakery down the street.” Sora said hopefully, looking at the silver haired male.
Riku shook his head as he chuckled. "There you have it, Doc. We'll be back after Sora stuffs his face." Riku gave Sora a sudden stern look. "You had better not throw up in my car afterwards."
Sora scoffed, “Just for that, I will!” He replied, standing after the doctor put a bandage over the wound.
Riku snorted, “You do that and you won't be getting something for a month.” He replied softly as the doctor left the room, closing the door with a soft snap behind him.
Sora's mouth dropped, “That's cruel and usual punishment! You wouldn't do that to me!” He said, “You couldn't hold out that long anyway.”
Riku chuckled, “No more than you could.” He answered as he grabbed his lover's hand leading him out of the room, dropping his hand once they had rejoined people, it was almost out of habit now just to make sure no one caught on that they were more than friends.
Sora laughed at that, “That's why you wouldn't last, because I don't want to go without it for a month.” He pointed out as the pair walked out of the doctor's office.
Thank the gods the bakery was right across the street from the doctor's offices and they didn't have to go far. He pinched Sora's cheek lightly. "You're just too cute for your own good. Even when sick."
Sora pouted, “I am not cute!” He insisted, “Girls are cute! Babies are cute! Little puppies and kitties are cute! But, not me!”
Riku chuckled softly once more, “Alright, alright, you're not cute.” He answered as they came up upon the bakery, he held the door open for the brunet.
Sora had a grin plastered on his face as he walked into the bakery, “I want a chocolate donut with chocolate icing and rainbow sprinkles!”
"And a glass of milk too?" Riku raised an eyebrow at him.
Sora crinkled his nose in disgust, “Ew, don't even mention that!” He whined as the pair made their way up to the counter.
