Chapter Four
{Sebastian}
He was here.
Sebastian knew the minute he emerged from slumber that
Kain was here, in the Industrial quarter.
possibly want?
There was nothing here but humans, machines and Sebastian.
Sebastian swallowed; maybe Kain had regained his memory
and was now here to hunt him down. He shivered, then
stopped at that thought. Wasn’t that what he wanted? The idea of his past Lord,
enraged and out for revenge, did not please him; but then, neither did the idea
of him having to kill his Lord who was lost, confused and did not remember or
understand why.
He would rather have his Lord screaming for his death than
staring at him the way he had in the lower city.
Then, like lightening, it hit him. The nexus stone!
The one thing that would protect one from the reaver, the
only protection there was. Sebastian growled low in his throat. The Sarafan
Lord had used the stone once, he remembered it
exactly, the way it had glinted on his golden armour. Sebastian had thought it
beautiful then, but now he couldn’t stomach to be in the same room as it. That
stone had been Kain’s undoing.
Now, because of it, the Sarafan Lord held the reaver.
The elegant sword had always looked so very wrong held in
that creature’s hands, so very clumsy and ill fitting, unlike when held in his
Lord’s hands. The sword matched Kain perfectly; it was like the two had been
made for each other. He remembered many times watching his Lord class=GramE>use, clean or just hold the sword; he had treated the damn
sword better than he treated most people.
It was always close to him, held in his lap, his fingers
playing over the blade, and even when the blade was propped in a corner in his
room Kain’s eyes always strayed to it. Many a time Kain had just held out his
hand and the reaver had jolted to him as if pulled by fast wings. The two had
been inexplicably drawn to each other.
If Kain really was after the Nexus stone, then that meant
he really was going to fight the Sarafan Lord. That thought brought two
emotions this time. One was fear, for he knew that his present Lord was a
strong and brutal creature. But the other was an acute sense of relief; at
least, his past Lord was really giving thought to his attack this time by
collecting the nexus stone.
He stood and exited his quarters. Then, he made his way
towards his past Lord’s energy. He was determined this time; he had to kill
him. He had to! If he didn’t, then the Sarafan Lord would have him chained in
the dungeon like the poor creature he had been forced to see. He would not
allow his lord to fall to that fate.
At least, if he killed him, it would be kind and painless.
Then, with his Lord dead, Sebastian would allow himself to die. They would be
together again, he would make sure of it.
Outside was cold, but as he clambered lower towards the
entrance chambers and his Lord’s energy, it warmed, the heat from the machines
heating the air. He paused on one of the tower roofs, he could see him.
His Lord crouched just a few feet away on a lower roof.
Sebastian swallowed heavily. If he took five steps. class=GramE>he could be in his Lord’s arms again. But no! He had to do
this! Sebastian edged forwards just a little, weapon held tightly in his grasp.
He raised the sword and prepared to leap down behind his Lord, when Kain
suddenly laughed.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“These
humans never looked twice in my direction; little do they know their future
Lord walks among them. Now tell me of this place”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Sebastian
felt wetness on his cheek that did not burn. A blood tear. His Lord was
sounding more like himself now, and he lowered his sword as Kain walked away towards
the centre of the roof.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Obviously,
Kain was using the whisper, a form of telepathy found only in vampires. Perhaps
he was talking to Vorador. It hurt Sebastian to have his past so close, Kain
and Vorador . . . would they take him back? Would he be welcome in the Cabal?
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Excitement
filled him for a brief moment as he imagined throwing himself at his past
Lord’s feet and begging to be spared. His Lord would help him stand and welcome
him back with open arms. Together, they would find the Nexus stone and venture
back to where ever the vampires’ base was. He would meet his father once again.
Then, together, they would destroy the Sarafan.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>His happy
daydream was blown away by his Lord’s voice
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Have you
any further wisdom to dispense?” Yes, Kain was most defiantly talking with
Vorador.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>His day
dream shattered by reality, he crouched and made to spring, but found himself
just watching as Kain leapt elegantly down onto the bridge. A human female
guard noticed him almost instantly, but not fast enough. A pristine clawed hand
dipped into her chest as if into warm butter and remerged pulling forth her
heart.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>A second
guard ran up from behind and managed to score a hit on his past Lord. Sebastian
winced in sympathy, then stopped breathing as Kain closed a hand on the woman’s
throat and he lifted her slamming her into a wall. She became limp in his,
hands dazed by the blow. Sebastian bit his own lip as his Lord sunk his fangs
into the woman. She groaned loudly becoming lost in the poisons of a vampire
bite. Her thin arms wrapped around his Lord’s shoulders, one hand twining in
his hair, her legs wrapping around his waist as she died.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Sebastian
ran.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
collapsed in his chambers once again. He clawed at his helmet for a moment
before throwing it off. His hands buried themselves in his hair, trying to get
as close as possible to his brain so he could force the memories away.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Sebastian gasped and writhed as much as he possibly
could, considering he was trapped between a wall and his Lord. class=GramE>Fangs scraped across his flesh, causing all the small hairs on his
arms, legs and neck to stand to attention.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>“Please,” he breathed and was answered as fangs
dipped gently into his flesh.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Sebastian felt himself go completely rigid
everywhere. His breath was coming in short gasps, the poison of the bite
slipping into his system, drowning his thoughts in pure sensation. He felt
himself push forward, pressing completely against his Lord. He whimpered loudly
as he felt his Lord draw back.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>“Impatient,” was whispered, “the wall is no place
for this, I think.” His Lord smiled at him properly. Sebastian smiled back a
little wobbly. These were the only times he’d ever seen his Lord smile
properly. When they were like this.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>He staggered towards the desk and chair as it was
closer only to hear a deep laugh behind him and feel hands push him towards the
bed. His lust-fogged mind wondered briefly why he was pushed from the desk;
they’d done it there plenty of times before, why not now?
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He jolted
awake, suddenly startled by some loud echo across the quarter. Something had
been blown up again. It sounded like it had come from the gondola. He didn’t
care. A dry sob tried to escape his throat, but he swallowed it. He couldn’t
fight his past Lord, he’d tried and failed, he just couldn’t do it, <
cl
class=GramE>he didn’t have the stomach for it.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He’d
given up.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He slowly
allowed himself to slip back into his memories.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Clothes were gone now, flesh touched only flesh. He
yelped loudly as he felt fangs slip into the areola of his right nipple; he gasped
and clawed at his Lord’s back, arching upwards. Fangs slipped out quickly
taking no more than half a mouthful of blood, he almost purred as black lips
closed over his own and shared his own blood with him.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>His hands wandered over his Lord’s flesh, tracing
his death scar with gentle claws, making his Lord shudder silently. Sebastian
smiled and slid down lower beneath his Lord, reaching up to lap at the scar.
His Lord’s arms shook, threatening to give out.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Gently, he was pulled back up by a claw under his
chin. He leaned upwards, nuzzling into the junction at his Lord’s throat and
shoulder, lapping at the smooth flesh there. A vibrating purr sounded from his
Lord, who pressed into the caress. Sebastian gasped suddenly as one of his
Lord’s hands ghosted over his erection. Instantly, his muscles turned to jelly
and he flopped back, bonlessly.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>A smooth pale hand closed around him, squeezing,
just shy of causing pain, making him arch and groan loudly. The grip softened
just a little and began to move, stroking over his flesh. Sebastian did purr
this time, moving his hips in time with his Lord’s attentions.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>He felt more than saw his Lord smile again. And
suddenly, he felt an almost soul crushing emotion. Never before had he ever
been this happy. He had decided a long time ago that this affair had become
more than just physical to him. He had fallen in love. He loved his Lord and at
this precise moment he felt he would burst unless he let Kain know.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>“Love . . . you” he managed to gasp out, as he felt
his climax stir within him. He squeezed his eyes shut hard
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>The moment the words left his mouth, the hand
stroking him seemed to change. Two thick digits and a large thumb replaced the
four delicate fingers and a thumb. The hand stopped being smooth and became dry
and abrasive. He whimpered out loud, not wanting to open his eyes.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>A mouth closed on his, and it was no longer dark,
soft lips with deadly hidden fangs but dry, cracked lips with teeth that were
not many but one large corrugated edge, similar to a fish’s mouth. He whimpered
again and felt tears prick at the corners of his eyes as he opened them. Golden
armour, green glowing eyes, dry brown crusted skin, the Sarafan Lord.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>He felt something hard push at his entrance and he
all but yelled out, NO!! PLEASE NO!!
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Then it was gone, the grip on him was released and
suddenly he was on the cold hard floor. He feo hio his knees, gasping with class=GramE>relief, oh thank the dark gods, thank you, thank you, thank
you.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>A gasping growl made him look up and his stomach fell.
Instantly, he felt his throat convulse as if he was going to be ill. His
previous position was now occupied by his past Lord.
>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>He closed his eyes and wished he could close his
ears as he listened to loud, angry growls, deep chuckles and claws tearing bed
sheets as his Lord obviously fought his position. The juicy thunk of hard metal
hitting soft flesh echoed throughout the chamber and the growls stopped, as did
the tearing cloth. He looked up a little and saw blood dripping from the bed
onto the floor. His Lord wasn’t moving and there was blood on a golden armoured
claw.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Sebastian cried out and slumped on the marble
feeling helpless.
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>“Wait . . . I want him watching, voyeurism was
always one of my tastes” his present Lord called out
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>NO! He couldn’t watch! This couldn’t be happening!
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Het hit his head down but hands closed around the
sides of his head forcing him to watch, ropes fastened around his hands and
ankles, pinning them to rings on the floor, he was stuck. An armoured hand
grasped his hair, pulling and keeping his head up.
<
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>Two Sarafan guards stood beside the bed now also,
one on each side. They were obviously attempting to hold Kain’s arms down and
were succeeding. Sebastian whimpered again and tried to look away as he saw the
his golden Lord position himself, owl owl echoed from deep within his past
Lord’s chest but it soon became a roar as the Sarafan Lord thrust brutally
inside.
style=t-sit-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He jerked
awake, gasping, sweating and with blood tears running down his face.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>The dream
was a vision, a vision of what was going to happen if he didn’t stop it right
now! It gave him strength and refilled his determination to protect the one he
held most dear, even if it meant killing him first.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Sebastian
wiped his face with his bed sheet and stood. There was work to be done.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>~
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
class=GramE>“Sire! A body! We found a body, sire!” the panicking
glyph guard rambled. Sebastian wanted to roll his eyes. How in Nosgoth had this
human gotten to the rank of glyph guard without seeing a dead body before?
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Sebastian
was distracted. He felt his Lord’s energy very close, he knew he was being
watched. He could practically feel Kain’s eyes on him. He took a deep breath,
readying himself for the best acting of his life.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.mso-mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“It won't
be the last” he snapped “He is here, I sense the taint
of his overblown arrogance”. He mentally thanked Marcus for that little line.
“Double the guards in the power chamber. He must not be allowed to approach the
Nexus Stone.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
smirked to himself, hoping he said the location of the stone loud enough so
Kain would have heard, but not too loud that he would be suspicious.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Who is
it, sire?” the guard asked.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>“The only thing in this God forsaken world I have
evered,”ed,” Sebastian thought.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“An old
friend, who will learn his place in the world, at last,” he sniffed. “If you
see or hear anything out of the ordinary report it to me at once!”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
continued smirking as he walked off, listening to the screams of the guards as
they were slaughtered. It seemed Kain had not lost his appetite for slaughter.
It was strange really, nights of sitting in the cultured library talking of
politics and battle tactics with Kain had often caused Sebastian to forget how
primal and blood thirsty his past Lord could be.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He shook
his head, no! He would not slip into his memories.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
stalked quickly towards the staff room in the power chamber where the Nexus
stone was held. His appearance caused several of the humans to drop hot
beverages on themselves, and then try to hide the fact that it was scolding
them.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“One of
you is to take up position in the control box” he snapped.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>A single
human stood and walked to him. He nodded, and together they walked towards the
power chamber.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Your
name, mortal,” Sebastian asked briskly. “I would like to know the name of the
one who will witness this.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“John,
Master Sebastian sir,” the human answered, confused at Sebastian’s words.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“John,
what you are about to witness . . .” Sebastian stopped and sighed. “Just do as
I say, all right?” he spoke a little softer. “You will be in no danger.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“There’s
an intruder, isn’t there. We were speaking of such in the staff room, another
vampire.” John paused, his heavily accented voice slipping. “You’re going to
fight, isn’t you, master Sebastian sir?”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Yes,”
Sebastian answered simply, “but do not fear. As I said, no harm will come to
you. Just do as you are told.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>With John
placed in the control room, Sebastian perched elegantly on a ledge and watched
the stone. Ironic that once again this little stone would be the death of Kain.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
But for now there was nothing to do but wait.
Sebastian decided a little while ago that he hated
waiting. Waiting meant thinking, and thinking always brought back memories. He
didn’t want to slip into another one again.
He cursed himself again, if only he had remained loyal. He
shook his head. If only he hadn’t been jealous, if only . . . a word of ifs,
none of them real. He might as well say, if only Magnus had never been sired,
then none of this would have happened.
Blaming Magnus was . . . cruel, but it was his fault! But class=GramE>then it wasn’t not really. Magnus had not made Sebastian
betray them all, he had just been the catalyst, he had provoked him. Sebastian
shook his head, his thoughts a mixture of guilt, anger and blame.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Sebastian
raced through the camp. He had just returned from scouting the outer areas as
was his duty this evening. Half way through his normal routine he had spotted
them. Sarafan, the entire Sarafan army was hidden delicately, squatting in one
of the tiny valleys surrounding
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>They were
planning an ambush.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He had to
warn his Lord.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Racing
through the camp, hitting his highest speed and using all his power to maintain
it, he almost collided several times with unwitting fledglings. His Lord’s tent
was in the centre of the camp and made to look like all the others. A simple
tactic really, if they were attacked in the daylight, when they slept, it would
be impossible for the attackers to know which tent housed the vampire leader
and which housed ordinary soldiers.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
arrived at the tent and threw back the flap acting as a door. Instantly he
stopped. He stopped and blinked. It took a moment for his brain to click into
what he was seeing. Once it had settled in his mind that his eyes were not
playing tricks he turned and walked away without saying a word.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He walked
slowly through the camp, his slow pace disguising his racing mind and the
rapidly growing feelings of anger and betrayal in his gut. Unseeing eyes passed
over fledglings, tents and weapons as he made his way to the edge of the camp.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
stopped once he reached the brim of camp and fell to his knees. No sound
escaped him. He had been betrayed. The only creature who
he had ever cared for had treated his affection as if it was worthless.
Instantly, thoughts of his own inadequacy filled his mind. Was he not good
enough? Was he so worthless that his love had to call another to fill the gaps
he obviously left?
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Was he
valued so little?
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Fear and
sadness gave way to rage, anger filled him like water in a bucket.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>His Lord
was not the only one who could betray.
Sebastian winced at the memory, all this pain now because
his pride had been injured then . . . but it was more than his pride that had
been hurt. His entire sense of self had felt lik had had been chewed up and
spat out.
He shuddered. Ever since Kain had chosen him over Magnus,
it had been like Magnus had done every thing in his power to become more than
Sebastian. He had tried almost everything to seem stronger, faster, smarter and
ultimately more attractive.
Obviously it had worked, for inside tee tent Kain had had
Magnus pinned against one of the supports, their mouths crushed together.
Magnus had had one hand buried in the mist of Kain’s hair while the other was
not visible, but by the vocalisations of his Lord and the steady movement of
his hips Sebastian had known exactly where it was.
The sight still brought bloody tears to his eyes, and it
still brought the questions of why? Was he not enough? Was
his entire self, mind, body and soul so worthless to his Lord that he would be
compelled to seek a quick hand job from Magnus?
He shook his head violently, trying to shift the memory
away.
He needn’t have worried though. As he tried to shoo the
memory from his mind, the machinery around him jolted and the dais rose.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He
watched unnoticed from the shadows as Kain looked around.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Behold
the great Kain, now a common thief,” Sebastian sneered drawing Kain’s attention
to himself. Kain stared at him a moment, then recognition dawned on his face,
sending Sebastian’s stomach plummeting.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Sebastian!
It is you who have been following me!” Kain snapped suddenly.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
class=GramE>“And how long it took you to discover it.”style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'> He
sneered again, praying to what ever gods there were that Kain would not look class=GramE>to hard at his eyes and see the emotion that undoubtedly
swirled there. “My master sent me to prevent your meddling further. And now you
must die.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-fa:Ver:Verdana'>“Your
master knows his days are numbered.” Kain smirked arrogantly and Sebastian met
it with his own. “I might have spared your life by asking that you join me, but
I learned that lesson two hundred years ago.” Sebastian’s smirk faltered as he
fought off memories and guilt. “You arranged the ambush that destroyed my army.
You sold yourself to our enemy!”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“I dealt
the blow that cost you the war. Glorious, was it not?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> So many killed, so quickly, and all moingoing.” Sebastian’s heart pounded in his chest, his stomach flipped.
Altogether, he felt he would pass out any moment. He swallowed, hoping to wet
his mouth
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“I never
learned why.” Kain’s voice was slightly more subdued now. Sebastian winced. He
needed his Lord to keep his anger. If the anger faltered, Sebastian knew he
would never be able to go through with this. He needed to provoke him.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Did you
think I would serve while you ruled Nosgoth!? You, and not I!?” he nodded to
John who in turn lowed the dais. “The Sarafan Lord knows how to value me. I am
to rule by his side and achieve what you never could.” He spat the last three
words, hoping to drive them into his Lord
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“You
fool!” The words had obviously worked. “You think that butcher will permit you
to live one moment longer than he has need of you?style='mso-spacerun:yes'> I will save you from your disappointment,
Sebastian, and kill you now.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“I have
waited two hundred years for the pleasure of killing you with my own hands.
While you have been sleeping, my powers have been increasing. You haven't the
smallest chance of defeating me.” No doubt Marcus and Faustus had said similar
things.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>The fight
itself was a fand pnd painless blur in Sebastian’s mind. He knew he was being
struck, yet he did not feel the pain. It was almost as if he had gone blind,
deaf and completely, horribly numb. He felt himself land in the whirlpool of
power brought up by the stone time and time again and yet he kept making the
same mistake. It was like his body was rebelling against his mind, making him
lose.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“John,
raise the dais!” he cried out when he felt one too many blows land on him. He
had to stop his Lord from challenging the Sarafan Lord,
he had to destroy the stone.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“I will destroy
this precious jewel!” he yelled.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He felt
the hand around his throat, saw the golden eyes glaring into his own, heard the
shout and he wished it had been different.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Then he
was air born, thrown. Landing in burning steam.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Tell me
of the Nexus Stone and this portal. What is its purpose here? Speak and I will
spare your life!”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>For one
blinding moment Sebastian felt his entire soul rise upwards in joy. His Lord
was accepting him, despite what had occurred . . . but looking into his eyes he
saw anger a small hint of sadness, but mostly anger.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Besides,
even if he were allowed to live, he would never be happy again, not ever. Even
if he were permitted to join the Cabal, his guilt would eat him alive even more
furiously than it had been doing over these two centuries.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He could
not imagine things ever going back to how they once were.style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Come,
Kain, you lie in your throat and we both know it, you are going to kill me.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>‘It’s more than I deserve,’style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'> his mind
spoke to him quietly in a resigned tone of voice.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Indulge
me, then, before you die” Kain growled.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“I'll
tell you so that I may see your face when you learn you are powerless.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> You cannot win!style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Your death is inevitable.” He moved, crawling
feebly, not really trying to get anywhere but just moving nonetheless. “The
Nexus Stone's portal leads to an ancient device deep underground that will
spell your destruction, Kain. A new
reign will begin in Nosgoth.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>He would
aid his Lord, even if it had to be cryptic.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“What is
the purpose of this device? How will it serve the Sarafan Lord?” Kain demanded,
and Sebastian felt guilt at not being able to answer.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Alas, he
has not entrusted me with that knowledge. But soon, everyone will know it.style='mso-spacerun:yes'> His plans are, even now, coming into
fruition.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='mso-bidi-font-style:normal'>‘But none of it matters. Now you are here; you will
stop it all, won’t you, and you will save us all.’style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'> A deep
sense of contentment stole over him
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Where is
the device? Where under the earth?” Kain asked,
desperation hinting in his voice.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>style='mso-spacerun:yes'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“It lies
beneath
for it you will. I die happy in the knowledge that all your efforts will be
wasted.” Even now he acted. ‘Why?’
his tired mind yelled. ‘So he will not
feel guilt over my demise, so he will not feel the pain I have endured for two
hundred years,’ the other part spoke back softer. A small smile curled on
his lips.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“Oh,
Sebastian, our destiny could have been glorious.” There was a hint of sadness
behind the anger now. But was it sadness for the loss of his victory or the
loss of his lieutenant? “The land was ours
class=GramE>for the taking.
History would have been rewritten in our image.”
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>Sebastian
swallowed and felt his body weaken. He was trying to focus on the words his
Lord was saying, but found it difficult when just the mere sound was enough. He
would die listening to that sound. The thought pleased him.
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>
style='font-size:8.0pt;mso-bidi-font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Verdana'>“But not
everyone shared my vision. And now your time is up. Your death will only make
me stronger; I hope that knowledge comforts you in your grave.”
It would.
He was no longer worried, he had felt the power in his
Lord and he knew now that Kain would be victorious. Absorbing his soul and
powers would aid him. Sebastian was grateful to be able to do this one last
thing for him. His only regret was that he would not be there to witness his
Lord’s victory.
He would die happy in the knowledge that he’d got to hear,
smell and touch him one last time.

The End
