Chapter III
====================
Kairi smiled as she opened her eyes, leaning with one foot properly against the tree where she had taken a break. She stood straight and hefted the heavy bag again from where she’d dropped it beside her. In hindsight, she was really glad she’d had such a memorable first time. She knew not all girls were so lucky. According to Selphie, Tidus had been far too excited about having her, and, well, it hadn’t lasted as long as she would have liked. He had improved with practice, so she was told, but Selphie still joked with her about blitzers being just that; all go and no staying power. She claimed he made up for it in other ways, but had yet to elaborate.
She shook her head, still reminiscing. Even though she hadn’t gotten all the blood out of her skirt, and had managed to get more on her underwear by the time she got home, somehow, it wasn’t likely to raise eyebrows; accidents happened after all, and the timing was fairly close, but she had been sure she was about to get a lecture when her mother, well, foster mother really, though she was still the only mother Kairi really remembered, had caught her at the medicine cabinet, quickly reading the information in the packets on the shelf where she kept her birth control products. Sure enough, she had put two and two together quickly, but instead of launching into a tirade, the older woman had just leaned on the doorframe, a small smile on her lips.
“They really are getting younger.” Her eyes took on a hint of concern. “It was your choice? You weren’t pressured or anything like that?” Kairi shook her head blushing again.
“No, but… we didn’t, um, use anything… you know?” She bit her lip but her mother just nodded, eyes closed.
“I should probably tell you off… But the way I see it, you haven’t done anything wrong. Every girl wants her first time to be special. Was it? Did he treat you well?” Kairi nodded. “Good. Now, I’m not going to ask you who; that’s your business, but you might want to be more careful in future. For now though, look…” She had come forward to stand behind Kairi, and hugged her warmly about the shoulders, then reached for a different packet. She had seen a whole side of her mum that she’d never dealt with before, as the woman proceeded to teach her about when, how, and under what circumstances to use each of the products she kept, as well as explaining some of her other options. The whole conversation had seemed very surreal.
By the time she had reached the beach front path that skirted the houses, she had just about cooled off from the heated blood that such memories caused, but a glance up at the houses, and one in particular, undid all her hard work. Riku’s house. That was where the event that had, eventually, led to her current situation had happened. Such an unexpected even too; very spontaneous, very exciting. She grinned to herself, waking on, and started to hum quietly.
It had all started because of Riku’s age; he’d ended up missing the very worst two years of school he could have. He hadn’t graduated, like she and Sora were due to do this year, and had also, along with Sora, missed all of the normal preparing for work lessons that she had caught. In the end he’d decided not to bother finishing the last two years, but to just see about getting work. In truth, she did wonder what school could possibly offer them, compared to all they’d been through, especially Riku.
So it had happened that she’d found herself knocking on the front door of his house, barely a week after they’d arrived back. From the outside, the house looked like most of the others either side of it; two floors, simple colours, and a light variety of native plants and trees dotted about. She knocked again, resettling the books under her other arm.
“It’s open!” She heard Riku’s voice, faintly, coming from the open window up above and to the right of the door. He lived with just his mother, but it was the middle of the morning on a Saturday; she was probably out somewhere. Pushing the door open, she wandered in slowly, looking about. The place was neat and tidy, and mostly done out in soothing pastel colours. She noticed several kitschy wall hangings of pressed flowers, or butterflies, and resisted the urge to roll her eyes when she glanced into the kitchen to see a small hanging reading ‘There is a place for everything, and everything is… um, well… someplace.’
Riku’s family was a bit of an anomaly. As far as she knew, his mother had never been married. She had once asked Riku about his father, but he’d said he didn’t know, and that it wasn’t really important either. It had made her curious enough to investigate, but she’d found no one on the island with hair or eyes like Riku’s. Very strange.
“Up here!” His voice was fainter than before, coming from the staircase at the back of the house. As she climbed the stairs the wall hangings stopped, replaced by little signs in red texter, written on lined paper in his mother’s hand. ‘Warning! Danger!’ remarked one at shoulder height.
The upper floor was really more like a re-done attic space, with the occasional sloping ceiling here and there. It seemed almost like a separate flat, in a way, with its own bathroom and study, and at the end of the hall, what she assumed was Riku’s bedroom, where the concentration of happy little warning signs increased. His door was closed over, and along with a small plaque bearing his name, were a number of other advisories, such as ‘Do not open before 11 a.m.’ and ‘Beware of the Riku!’ The later bore a small smiling sunflower drawn in the bottom right corner. They made her smile because, as much as it was his mum’s doing, and he probably protested it, Riku hadn’t taken the things down either.
As she pushed the door open, she could see Riku lying on his bed on the other side of the room, apparently reading a copy of Jexsoph Croxand’s Heart of Darkness. She almost groaned there and then. He knew she and Sora would be rolling their eyes at that one for months, and no one else would have a clue why. She bet he wasn’t even reading it, judging from the corners of several suspicious-looking magazines barely visible underneath the bed. The rest of the room was fairly plain, if not nearly as neat as the rest of the house. The window at the end of his bed looked out over the ocean, while another, set into the sloping ceiling of the right wall, gave a view over much of the main island. Opposite it, a low flat-topped dresser seemed to be acting as temporary storage for clutter, as was the built-in, left open on the wall by the door. Riku turned a page with one finger as he heard the door open.
“Mum’s out. What can I- Kairi!” He almost dropped the book as he looked up, seeing her, and sat up, deftly scuffing the suspect magazines further out of sight with one heel as he did. She was sure she would never have noticed the move if she hadn’t already seen them. “What brings you here? It’s a little unexpected.” He tossed the book aside, looking at her. Kairi stepped into the room proper, then took another couple of steps side-on to him, looking out the window over the town.
“Well, I heard you weren’t going to come back to school.”
“Yeah. The way I see it, I would have finished last year. Can’t go to college without finishing high school, and I don’t think I could stand doing a year where everyone is two years younger than me.” He kicked back again. “Besides, I don’t see Sora picking up the time he missed, and after everything, well, school seems kind of pointless. I’m surprised he’s even going back.” Kairi opened the other window, letting in a breeze that the other window wasn’t catching, then jumped as the change of pressure slammed the bedroom door behind her. On the back of the door were pencil sketches and pages of notes that looked like Riku had been attempting to reconstruct in detail his time up to, beyond and surrounding their journey and his visit to castle Oblivion. She turned back to him.
“I thought as much, but what now, then?” I don’t think your mum is just going to let you spend all your time fishing and pretending to read.” She grinned at him, glancing pointedly at the book. Riku looked at it too before raising an eyebrow at her.
“Not funny?” He shrugged. “You’re right. She wants me to get a job.” Kairi rocked on her feet, books in front of her, quietly exultant.
“I thought so. Well, it looks like you have two options then.” She delighted at the suspicious glance he gave her.
“Oh?” She turned back to the window to hide her mirth.
“Well, you could go back to school, where they’ll teach you all about how to get work.” She waited a few seconds, watching a bird wheeling over the houses while Riku just looked at her, waiting. “Or, I could teach you all about it instead, because you’ll need to know how to do this stuff.” Riku knew how much of a kick she’d get out of teaching him, confident, capable, independent Riku, anything, but she was sure he’d find the alternative much more galling. She turned and crossed the room, pretending unconcern, and placed the books on his dresser. Riku put his hands behind his head, blowing hair off his face.
“Enjoying this?”
“Where should I start? Resumes or cover letters?” The boy groaned, though it was probably more for show.
“I can just go and ask around all the shops, someone will have something. Do I really need to do all this, just to get work here on the island?” Kairi made a face and crossed her arms in front of him.
“Yes. You do. I got to sit through it in class while you and Sora were out risking your lives, so now you get to go through it as well. Sora did yesterday; now it’s your turn.” She grabbed the first book back from his dresser and turned quickly back to him. “So…” She grinned at him again. Riku sat up with a sigh, letting Kairi drop down beside him.
“Fine,” He glanced dubiously at the book cover. “Surely this is just as boring for you?” She ignored his pleas, instead beginning on cover letters, and getting him to repeat back every piece of important information she gave him. By the time she had reached tailoring resumes for each application she was seated cross-legged on the bed, while Riku wandered aimlessly about the room. Every now and then she became aware of his eyes on her, and sometimes in places she should reprimand him for looking, but she let it slide. It wasn’t worth embarrassing him over, and, in a way, she found it more than a little gratifying. It made her smile when he wasn’t watching. Riku stopped, facing the sketches on the back of his door. He reached out a hand to touch a large blank space he had left to fill in, interrupting her suddenly, though his voice was quiet.
“Kairi, do you think a being solely of light could ever be with one once lost in the darkness? One tainted, and permanently coloured by it?” Surprise made her face and mind go blank. Instinctively she placed the book aside, sitting straighter, her feet back on the ground.
“Riku… what are you saying?” He turned around, intense green eyes boring into hers, and she realised again how very striking he could be. His voice was serious now.
“I want you Kairi. More than you know, more than I’ve ever wanted anything else before.” He waited, watching her with those eyes while her mind exploded into a confusion of emotion and thought. To hear him asking sent an excited thrill through her body, but at the same time her mind screamed that she was with Sora now, even as it struggled with the fact that she did love Riku as well. She stood up to give herself a moment, trying to think.
“I-” But the right words still hadn’t arrived. What could she say? She turned around to look out the window, still torn. She couldn’t say no, not to Riku, not after all they’d been through. But it would be wrong! It didn’t matter how much the unexpected proposition excited her, it must be wrong, mustn’t it? She jumped as she felt Riku’s hands rest softly on her shoulders. She could feel his body close against hers. It made her breath quicken, even as another part of her rebelled against the fact. His voice was softer, though no less serious.
“Please, Kairi. Let me walk beside you, like I’ve never been able to walk with anyone before, on your path, now that mine is finished.” She felt herself lean back against him gently, still looking for a way to answer, still struggling to work out how she was going to answer. “Kairi, I give you all that I am, let me be your first.” Her heart wrenched towards him as she heard the earnest note in his words, but through it, something she could say worked its way forward. She reached up to touch one of his hands with hers.
“Riku… I’m not…” His hands slid away from her, and she felt him exhale behind her, though he didn’t move away.
“I understand. You can’t love one like me; the darkness is still a part of me as I walk this middle road, alone.” The heaviness in his voice almost made her cry.
“No, Riku, it’s not that, I do, you know I do, don’t you? It’s just… just that,” She felt herself blushing, searching for a way to say it. “Well, you wouldn’t be my first, Riku.” He stiffened against her, but only for moment. His hands returned a moment later, rubbing her shoulders softly. When he spoke, his voice as light, and she was sure it was forced.
“I get it. Looks like Sora came out the better again, right?” She could feel tears forming in her eyes at his pain, and, she realised, her own, as she nodded mutely, looking down. “Guess he really is better where it counts, huh?” She couldn’t bear it. After all he’d been through already, for her, all his suffering and self-destruction, and she really did want him too, she could feel her desire for him waging war with her morals. A small treacherous voice in her head whispered that Sora didn’t need to know, and then the struggle was over. She shook her head, her hands dropping to hold his waist behind her and stop him pulling away. Her voice shook, and she spoke quietly to hide the waver caused by her tears.
“No, Riku. Don’t say that. You and he are different, but I do love you too, and I do want you, if you’ll still have me.” She leaned back against him further, and felt a solid pressure where there hadn’t been one before, no doubt helped by her words. Even so, he reacted cautiously.
“No, Kairi, I can’t. That wouldn’t be fair to Sora.” His voice was laden with an odd mix of surprise, hopefulness, excitement and hesitation all at once. She leaned her head back onto his shoulder, her cheek brushing his, making her next words as inviting as she could.
“He isn’t here.” This was so risky, so wrong… she could feel a damp patch forming in her underwear already. Riku remained silent, his hands idly stroking her shoulders. His breath had picked up a little though, and she knew they both wanted to. He just needed a nudge, perhaps, and she felt another small thrill as an interesting idea came to her.
Pushing her hips back against his now very interested groin, she raised her hands and ran them softly over her body. When she reached her hips, her hands ducked under her skirt, sliding up to sit at the tops of her buttocks, pressed between his body and hers. A moment later, she drew her hands down again, pulling her underwear with them. They dropped free of her hands and she let her legs slide apart a little more, to catch them at her knees. Riku stiffened and she heard his breath catch. He inhaled deeply through his nose, and she wondered if he could smell her excitement already.
“Perhaps it’s wrong that I’m so easily convinced.” His voice was rougher than before, more heated. She felt his hands creep forward to begin following the path her hands had, though a little more roughly, over her breasts and her middle, then around her hips. His hands gripped her. “But I love you, Kairi, and I haven’t the strength to say no twice.” He pulled her tight against him, thrusting his own groin forward against her in the same motion. The fabric of her skirt was forced up against her growing heat, and she sighed quietly. He dragged the back of her skirt up with one hand, letting her rear rub directly against his jeans, and leaned forward to whisper in her ear.
“I’d go slower, but I can smell how much you want this.” She had been about to say something about how fast he was moving, but at the same time realised, to her own great surprise, how right he was. Her body was more than ready for this, practically dripping onto her underwear, far below.
“Mmmm… Ah! Riku!” Her moaned consent was cut off as she felt his teeth sink into her neck. At his hips, her hands balled into small fists as it sent a sharp tingle through her body. As her voice quieted, she heard the sound of a zipper being undone trickle teasingly through her awareness. Her body shuddered with anticipation in the brief void, then let out a long, heavy sigh, her eyes drifting shut as she felt his length, throbbing and twitching, rise up between her thighs to press wetly against the base of her heat. Her head fell back against his shoulder as he bit her again. A part of her still couldn’t believe that she was doing this, while the rest of her revelled in it. She opened her eyes again as she felt his hand slide up the middle of her back, then let out a small yelp as he bent her forwards, until she overbalanced. As her hands hit the bed, she drew another sharp breath, feeling the movement draw the full length of her wetness across the hard heat pressing against her. She heard him moan, felt his hands clutch harder against her at the sensation. His hand on her back trailed back down her middle to join his other, holding firmly to her hips as he pumped his groin against her again, then a third time. Each motion pushed her whole body forward as he slid across her, and she felt her breathing forced into line with him. The crudeness of it made her blush, but at the same time she found herself wanting more. She picked one hand up off the covers and slid it down between her legs, pushing back against him on the back swing to hold his movement still. Her hand played for a moment, massaging that spot he hadn’t quite reached yet, then ventured further, sliding slippery fingers over the heated length stroking her. He was slicked with her arousal and she smiled, pulling forward, away from him again until his head found her entrance, throbbing against it. Riku tightened, though with anticipation, or restraint, she couldn’t tell. Still smiling, she let out a quiet groan of pleasure as she pushed herself back down onto him. She could hear Riku groaning alongside her, his fingers clutching tight to her hips. As she pressed back against him, her sigh grew louder, her eyes opening and her eyebrows rising up; outside her, Riku felt no more or less endowed, but this angle... it felt much deeper, almost too deep for comfort, but not quite. Drawing a new breath, she looked back over her shoulder at him. Riku was still recovering from the initial penetration, but his eyes flicked open again a moment later, locking onto hers. He resettled his hands, stroking her sides and back.
“You feel so amazing, Kairi.” She blushed brighter and let her head drop again, her hand snapping back down to steady as he began to move again, slowly at first, but gradually picking up pace. She grit her teeth, watching her hair swing back and forth before her eyes as she felt his length sliding in and out of her body, thrusting and moving her whole form. The firm, even harsh, motions felt good, and she found herself gasping with each cycle. She clenched and unclenched her fists in his blanket, not caring that one hand was making a mess. His hands began to rove as he thrust against her, drawing tracks over her back and sliding down to grip hard at her buttocks. She raised her head groaning at the sensations.
“Mmm… Ah! Faster, Riku… Hah!” She gasped out between biting her lip. Another, louder, groan escaped her as he obliged, pounding into her faster than before. He leaned forward, hands reaching underneath to grip and massage her breasts through her uniform, and she heard his voice above her.
“You’re so… so beautiful, Kairi… I could… mmm... do this all day.” She swallowed, trying to breath through the shaking of her body.
“Yeah? Hahh… and what if… uhnnn! What if your… Mum came home?” A part of her realised that it was, in part, the risk that had her so excited as Riku leaned in closer; she could feel his head by her ear.
“She just might, you never know.” His voice moved to her other ear. “She could be coming in the door right now.” Kairi moaned at the thought, feeling her body tighten around him for a moment. Riku grunted and moaned in return, pulling upright again, his hips making longer strokes, and harder than before. She began to gasp and cry out with each thrust, feeling that building pressure that meant she was drawing close. His hand slid down, underneath her hip, questing towards where their motions were making the wet sounds of hard, desperate sex. She felt fingers wet themselves in her folds, then find and begin to play with her most sensitive spot, making small circles over it in time with the larger motions of his hips. Her eyes squeezed shut, her head thrown back as she grated at him.
“Ugh… Riku… Ahh! Like that, keep going!” It was coming; she could feel it all over her body, building from her groin. She could hear vocalised pants through clenched teeth above her as Riku struggled to obey, but everything else was lost as her climax built beyond her power to hold it back, rushing over her body and eliciting a cry that drained her lungs twice over, even broken as it was by Riku’s rapid thrusting. She felt her body convulse as the force of her orgasm ravaged her. The sound had barely died from her lips before she felt Riku go tense, and heard a high, tightly restrained groan tear free from his throat. His rhythm broke down into a series of uneven thrusts, harder than any before, some enough to make her grunt in genuine discomfort. She felt his seed inside her as he held her against him as tight as he could, the groan gradually quietening into heavy panting.
A moment later he withdrew and almost immediately she felt it begin to leak out, dripping onto her underwear and the floor below, and beginning to make a slower break for the ground via her right leg. Riku turned, sitting on the bed beside her, his penis still protruding, sticky and twitching from his jeans. He leaned over to where she still stood, bent, catching her breath, and kissed her softly on the cheek.
“Thank you, Kairi. Thank you for loving me as much as I love you.” She had looked back across at him, grinning now between breaths.
“Now who’s walking the middle path. Don’t tell Sora, ok?” He had only nodded, reaching for a discarded piece of clothing on the floor to clean himself up.
