Nanomachines
Snake was in the compound thanks to the terrain, it proved great for hiding outside, but hiding inside would require something else. He thought that maybe stealing the enemy’s clothes. They wore heavy clothing… He could pull it off. Before he was thinking it he was wearing a different outfit entirely, was standing in a broom closet with an unconscious and very naked soldier lying in a limp heap there. He waited until the hall was alone before walking outside.
Otacon sat at his desk eating something for breakfast and doing researching
Things were going smooth for him, incredibly smooth. He may even get out of here long before this even became known to the staff itself. He was so happy he could cry. “Hmmm, Otacon, I’m getting close to the computer room, I can have anything you need.”
"Good get anything you think we can take." Otacon replied
Snake was doing just that with a huge grin, Otacon meant guns too, right, as he was keeping this AK just as sure as God was in heaven. He was also taking almost all of the data, everything but the porn this guy had here… He paused and looked at it… Ok, maybe the porn too.
Otacon waited and sipped his drink. "You done?" he asked
“Pretty much” he whispered into the codec. The way in had been a breeze, the way out was becoming a nightmare… right about… somewhere between where the broom closet was opened, when he was being shot at or when this had just become loud with the bang sound of gunfire, him hiding behind the desk shooting over the side, while gripping the USB with the other hand.
"Snake?" Otacon called. "Snake do you read?"
“Busy” he mumbled as he shot aiming over the head. Karma doing her job when a bullet bit on the wood and got him in a rib, He made a sharp sound and ducked again, trying to get his head in order before turning and shooting again.
Otacon sighed and waited. "Snake what's going on?"
Snake was a little harsher then he would have liked to as Otacon’s impatience somewhat got to him. “I’m being shot at here, try to be patient!” He growled into the codec, looking for a way out.
"Well you could have said it nicer than that!" Otacon replied.
Snake reached down and touched his own blood through the fabric. He wanted out of here now and he got to work on it. So he was now pushing his way to leave and trying to hide again. “I have a bullet in my stomach and it burns, Otacon, you could try to be patient!” he growled at the scientist, making his way out, the soldiers not exactly cooperating.
"Snake find a place to hide and bandage it up as best as you can until you get out of there." Otacon said starting to worry.
“Christ…” he mumbled once he was lying down in the dirtiest hiding space you could think of. He looked from where he was under the lower shafts not happy to be in yet another type of pipeline, but at least this one was for water. He caught his breath a little and rolled on his back with a groan.
"Once you get back I'll--" the codec went to static.
“Otacon?” A pause. “Otacon, what the hell?! Answer me!” he tried over and over while lying where he was, this wasn’t fair, why did things go to hell like this, why?!
Otacon was hit in the head with a hard object more than likely the butt of a rifle and was knocked unconscious. Some guards picked him up and took him out of the bunker.
Snake had his equipment off and was using the same water that came from the disposal from the roof to clean his shot up, the bullet was a whole new painful story. He was so happy to be rid of it he could cry. Now to get back. He had what he needed and he’d patched up here, but he needed out. So he followed this to where it might go, which was luckily outside.
The guards put Otacon in a locked room and stayed outside. Otacon laid on the cold cement floor and groaned a little
Eventually Snake was leaning out with his USB (not letting go of it for the life of him) and his weapons. He then called through codec insistently, refusing to move until Hal responded.
Otacon heard his codec beeping and opened his eyes slowly with a moan. "hmmmn...?" he sat up slowly and rubbed the back of his head.
“Otacon, thank God! Where have you been!?” he asked, now moving out to return, oblivious to anything that happened to his partner and limping his way.
"I...I donno...I got hit with something and…woke up in this room..." Otacon said looking around. There was equipment everywhere like a laboratory.
Snake slowed in his tracks and leaned on something again to compensate for the burning pain in his ribs. “What?! Where are you now?!”
"In some room with lab equipment…" Otacon replied
Snake’s heart sank. He entered a very horrible and very brief flashback to Shadow Moses and then panicked. “That can’t be too far, I was gone for a second, I was talking to him a second ago; he has to be close.” He rambled to himself as he turned around back to the base to see what he could find. “Hal try to investigate where you are as soon as possible!”
"Sure as soon as my legs stop being numb..." Otacon said groggily trying to stand up using a table
Snake looked up. Damn it he swore to himself he was not messing with another ventilator shaft again but he needed the access. “Otacon I need you to look at your roof, tell me what type of cords you see.” He said, trying the most efficient way to find him. He watched carefully to see if there was anything he could follow to Hal.
"There's nothing but a ceiling..." Otacon replied. "Snake...I think they injected me with something I...I'm not feeling well…and I can't move my legs much..."
Snake was sick with worry but still ran through most corridors, trying not to alert anyone and all but dived back at the pipelines he was using. “Look down, tell me you see their water disposal system, cause I’m using it to get you” he mumbled, wincing in pain at the way it made him use his abdominal muscles and affected his wound. Bad enough that he was leaving a slight trail of red as his bandages came in contact to the floor.
"There's nothing but cement Snake..." Otacon said
Snake placed his hands together in frustration and looked up at God to help him. He pushed the panel out of the way and pulled himself out of there to go up the stairs, avoiding anyone. If Hal was out of the reach of the electric panels or the plumbing pipes he was somewhere in the upper levels and Dave was finding him, certain, like there was something in heaven. Eventually he stopped seeing connections and the structure was changing. “What color are the walls?”
"B...Blue and white…" Otacon said groggily
‘I can’t believe I’m looking for him using wall-paint’ he thought as he sneaked into a clearance room with these colors. He then hid inside a drawer with a bunch of chemicals. Unknowing he was infecting his wound. Not that he’d care anyway as he waited until the movement of people died down. “Otacon, don’t go to sleep until I’m there.”
"Snake I..." Otacon started. "......I'll try...not...to..." he said holding his head
One of the people that worked there passed past the drawer and lamentably for this person, he had a card, for one, and Snake had just heard the weak cracked voice of his techie in the codec and the pent up anger was involved in the blow he was given to the head with the panel Snake used to take him out. Snake cut out the card and sneaked into the lab like a cat-burglar. “Otacon?”
Otacon was passed out again on the floor.
“Damn it!” He said, dropping to pick the man up. He tried in his brain to remember the best protocol to conserve Hal’s life here. He shook him desperately trying to look around, if he went the way they came he risked being found and killed but there wasn’t any other way out. So he tried giving him first aid right here.
Otacon groaned and clung to Snake's suit
Snake concluded that he couldn’t afford to tend to him now and backtracked his way outside, the same way he came, carrying Otacon across his chest even when the weight on his left arm was making his wound open and bleed painfully.
Otacon continued to cling to him. His eyes tried to stay open. "S...Snake...?" he mumbled
“Just stay with me” he insisted, men don’t cry, damn it, he kept telling to himself like a mantra. But the pain and the fear where kind of getting to him. Eventually he made it out but didn’t know where to go as they’d found Hal. He took temporary refuge in a secluded location.
"…I...I don't feel...well..." Otacon moaned.
The place they were in wasn’t entirely safe but it would have to do, as Snake could not spend one more second without taking a look. He placed a hand on Hal’s forehead and touched him all over his face and neck, desperate to feel his temperature. He pulled him to lean on his knee while he did this. “What do you have, what did they do?!”
Otacon whimpered. "Don't…yell..." he said sitting up quickly and throwing up. He panted a little and groaned
“I’m not yelling; I’m having a panic attack.” He said, observing him and pulling some alcohol for the other to smell. Hopefully that could get the dizziness to subdue. Not even fully aware of what compelled him to kiss his partner’s forehead at all. “What do you remember them saying around you?” he asked, how far to a hospital?
Otacon trembled. "I…it was all in Russian..."
Now if only he could get him to a hospital in this god-forsaken place. He picked him up again to move out of there and hopefully find one. He was feeling a little weak as well but he knew himself and he could wait.
"mmmn..." Otacon continued to tremble
Snake got Otacon as far as some old place where they could deal with the ill and dumped him on a cot as soon as he got the chance to grovel to some doctor here. He had no medical plan in this place nor much to haggle with but they had policy enough to take Hal to check him out. Even if Snake refused to part with him.
Otacon looked around and squinted at the bright lights. "Sn...Snake..?" he whimpered looking around
“Present” he said lifting his hand so Hal could see it. The doctor in question working on finding out what sort of anesthesia they used on him and convinced that this was all some drug-related accident gone wrong. Not to mention that Snake had a gunshot wound on him which didn’t really yell ‘legal’.
Otacon managed a small smile at him before blacking out again
That had been pretty reassuring as he allowed the doctor to take a look at him with the condition that he worked with whatever Hal had in him first. He refused to let a nurse so much as look at him until the scientist was good enough to wake up.
A nurse came up to Snake. "Let me take a look at that wound sir."
“Uhnn.” He mumbled at his own dizziness but refused to move from the chair. “I think I already told you; is he awake?”
"He's resting while we wait for the tests to come back." the nurse said
“Alright.” He agreed waiting for her to leave and giving her a ‘no-I’m-not-getting-checked-out’ look.
"Please sir.." She pleaded with her hand on his arm
“Please work with him, this is fine, it happens when you’re too busy thinking about memory sticks. My partner, he worries me, just tell me as soon as the results are in.” he said, not really commenting as to where her hand was.
The nurse sighed, "He wouldn't want you to not seek help like this."
“I’d rather think I’m being useful.” He said, trying to get to her. “And this is not useful, can you go see if they have his results and if he woke up, because I could /use/ that.” His patience was kind of wearing thin there.
She sighed and left the room.
Snake waited on the chair a little more tranquil now that he was left to think to himself. He toyed with the idea of sneaking to where Otacon was but no fun as he’d rather this work well, for once.
The nurse came back in with a clipboard and stood looking at him.
Snake got up and looked at her for a moment, this better not be about his wound. “Well?”
"Your friend has been injected with some kind of unknown drug that we've never come across." she replied. "He might have been having an adverse reaction to it which explains the vomiting and lethargy."
“So what are you going to do about it?” he asked. Them not being able to do something for Hal not crossing his mind once as a possibility. It just wasn’t one.
"We're going to watch him and see if it has any lasting effects." she replied
“We’re going to sit down and wait for it to kill him?!” he asked, incredulous. The idea of sneaking past this woman even /more/ appealing. He’d do that as soon as she turned her back to him.
"It doesn't seem to be anything more than a knock out drug." the woman replied
“You could have started there” he said, a little more relaxed now that someone had confirmed that. He waited patiently for her to turn so he could sneak past her.
"Now we have to get you bandaged up." she said. "You're bleeding all over and it isn't sanitary."
“If he dies I’ll show you what it feels like.” He mumbled angrily getting up to follow her and allow her to work on him as needed. Problem being that he didn’t really want her to work on him before he could see Hal.
The nurse got the bullet out and carefully stitched up the wound. She put a bandage and antibiotics on it. "There that wasn't so bad now was it?"
“No, it wasn’t, but I bet you couldn’t keep your hands off me could you” he said with the flirtiest smile he could. Anxiety working him and he needed to calm down.
She raised an eyebrow and scoffed leaving the room.
He gave a laugh and then sighed. Mission accomplished, she was gone enough for him to leave the room and walk up to where he knew they had Hal at. At least he was done with his bullet hole for now. So better like this.
Otacon was in one of the beds, still unconscious, hooked up to one of the machines
‘What is that for?’ he thought immediately and sat there with him to check him out. Snake just waited there as it was far more comfortable and reassuring then waiting elsewhere.
Otacon breathed slowly but had a somewhat serene look on his face as he slept.
Snake looked at Hal and then at the door to see there would be nobody coming to check him anytime soon and went to lie down with him for a moment. Better for him, he could rest from his own vicissitudes and he knew it wouldn’t bother Hal. “Wake up, Hal, I have your USB thing, you want it, don’t you?” he pleaded.
Hal groaned a little in his sleep and he started trembling a little. "mmn....no...stop please...." he mumbled, his face had a look of fear on it even though his eyes were closed
“Just wake up and I’ll leave you alone.” He said, shaking him a little, more alarmed as well.
"..hmmn....ah....please....STOP!" Hal screamed sitting up. He was covered in a cold sweat and was panting a little
“Christ, Hal, you where dreaming!” he exclaimed while holding onto the man’s shoulders to try and calm him down. It was frightening enough as it was now it turned out worse.
Hal trembled and swallowed a little. He hugged himself and rocked back and forth. He looked at the IVs he was hooked up to and shrieked tearing them out.
“What the hell?!” he asked himself pushing Hal to pin him down against the bed. “Be still for a moment and calm down!” he said, trying to get a doctor for help with this.
Hal clung to him and sobbed as the nurses rushed in
Snake didn’t have the heart to get away from him, even when the nurses needed the space he would cooperate from really close to Hal, refusing not to be there when he was clearly wanted here… for some miracle of nature.
The nurses stuck him with a syringe with a sedative in it which caused Hal to bat the woman away before she could push the thing down to inject it. The nurse fell back to the ground
For one, Snake didn’t want him touched with anything like that, either, so he just took Hal’s chin in his hands and forced the man to look at him. “What’s happening to you, Otacon, what’s wrong?” he asked, even if he must not look too coherent himself.
Hal pulled the syringe out of his arm and clung to Snake. "D…Don't let them touch me!" he cried burying his face into Snake's chest
“Nobody’s going to touch you, Otacon, just calm down.” He said, sneaking a look to the nurses around them that meant that a step from them might mean a lot of blood-shed. He knew they were just nice people trying to do their job but right now he was too paranoid to care.
Hal clung to him and looked around as well.
“This looks really awkward.” He muttered then looked at the nurses in a menacing way again. “If you don’t take a hint I’m trying harder, now leave, please!” he said, as he needed to know what was wrong with Hal already.
The doctors and nurses left the room eyeing him
“Alright, what happened, Hal, what do you need?” he asked, now that he was more at ease with their surroundings.
Hal looked at him. "I...I...I want to get out...."
“Not until you calm the hell down, you’re scaring me out of my skin.” He said firmly as he was frightened of what could have cause Hal to get like this.
"I...I keep seeing things..." Hal replied. "I hear people in my head and I feel people touching me everywhere and no one's around!" the drug in question seemed to have hallucinogenic effects
“Then you should let the doctors take a better look at you” he said, getting up to look for said help.
Hal dug his nails into Snake's arms. "NO!"
“Agh! Stop that!” he said, trying to get Hal not to grab him like this. Not that he had a problem but he was stressed out of his mind. “I’m serious, I think you need help”
"They're going to pump me full of drugs that aren't going to do anything!" Hal sobbed letting go.
Snake went to him and pulled him to his embrace again. It worked better for him apparently so he went with it. “Then what do you suggest we do?” he asked, nuzzling Hal’s hair and trying to soothe him like that. He wasn’t good with any of this stuff.
Hal buried his face into Snake's chest. "I..I want to leave..."
He gave a sigh and looked around him. “This won’t do you any good, why do I do this?” he asked himself for a moment and then looked at Hal, petting his hair for a moment. “Can you walk?”
"I..I..Dunno..." Hal replied
Snake nodded and got off the cot to help Hal try, he’d get them out and there was no possibility of much trouble as they were not prisoners here.
Hal leaned against Snake as he shakily stood up.
Snake helped him out and held firmly onto him so they could walk outside and eventually into wide open spaces which were probably what Hal needed.
Hal looked around and fell to his knees, running his fingers over the grass.
Snake feared for Hal’s mental health when he played around with the grass under them. He looked at Hal do this for a while but eventually couldn’t handle the silence anymore. “Feel any better?”
Hal looked up at him. "I..I'm not sure what I feel..."
Yep, he went crazy; Snake should have seen this coming. Why did it hurt so much to think that he did? “Do you still hear things?”
"That thing...messed with my nanomachines..." Hal said
There, knowing what had been going on made Snake feel incredibly more at ease. “How about now? Did it pass?” he asked, still worried none the less.
Hal laid back on the grass. He laughed feeling the wind going through his hair
“You’re not helping out, please, do you feel any better?” he asked, now sitting next to him and feeling like an idiot.
Hal instantly silenced and looked at his hand that was still bleeding from the IV. "I feel like I’ve been locked in a cage forever..."
Snake reached to his own equipment and cut part of the new bandage he had with a knife and used it on Hal. He tried to avoid Hal to look at his wound or he’d probably nag him.
Hal blinked and ran his fingers over the bandage, sitting up. He looked up at Snake and pushed up his glasses
“You where bleeding” he said, a little awkward that Hal looked at him like that. Although he was not really complaining about the way Hal looked at him as he tended to look… appealing, like that.
Otacon nodded and stared at him, his head kind of tilted
“What?” He asked, reaching for something to give him, ‘stop staring like that’ he thought to himself but reached for the USB and handed it over. “Yeah, I got it.”
Otacon snatched it and eyeballed it like a child. "Ok I'll keep it." he said putting it in his pocket.
“Yeah, well, where do we go from here? Someone broke into base if you got caught so we have to clean our tracks.” He said, looking up at the sky and hoping it didn’t rain.
"I'm not sure.." Hal said still looking at him.
“I’ll lose my sanity if you keep staring at me like that, come on.” He said, in a hurry to get things moving so he could hide behind duty again.
"Alright.." Hal said leaning up and softly kissing Snake's lips, putting his arms around his neck
“Opposed to that I don’t mind staying where I am.” Bad Snake, he doesn’t need you to hit on him right now, he needs a new base. He reasoned with himself in silence and tried to help Hal to his feet. “We can use a room for headquarters until I figure out if our old ones are secure.” He said, looking around for the closest area to stay in.
Hal blinked and laid back on the grass slowly feeling rejected. "..."
“What’s wrong, come on” he said, sitting down and feeling the man’s forehead to see if he came down with something, today was not his day was it?
Hal looked down and away. "What am I to you..?"
“…” Snake didn’t need this right now but he could work with it of need be. And apparently right now it was needed. He dropped the hand that was taking Hal’s temperature to run a thumb over his lower lip. “You don’t want anything to do with me, trust me.” He assured the man but still leaned to kiss him. He knew he was probably doing the poor scientist a large amount of harm.
Hal blinked and kissed him back. "Stop giving me mixed messages...It hurts me more."
“Well what do you expect me to do; you’re doing something incredibly unhealthy to yourself.” He said, trying to get Hal to get up so they could get moving.
"How so?" Hal asked
“I’m not healthy for you, I told you already, can we move?” he asked, hoping he’d have the prudence of mind not to do something to this poor man he’d live to regret.
Hal looked at him sharply. "I'm not a child Snake."
“I’d say something but it will get me beat up.” He joked and looked around. “Independently of if you do this to yourself or not, I still think we should find a place to stay.”
"Like where?" Hal asked.
“Well it has to be in this country so there’s an old place next to the bar down that street.” He said pointing. “And that close to the bar makes this man very happy.” He said, pointing at himself.
Hal nodded slowly. "..right.." he said softly
“What?” he said with good humor. Then tried leading Hal there.
Hal started getting feeling back in his legs as he walked with Snake
“Alright, well we got the information so that’s not a loss. I’ll try to get our things back when possible.” He planned as they walked there.
Hal nodded and continued to follow him.
Eventually they got to the place in question and he opened it up and asked for the key. “Could be worse.” He said, trying to lighten the mood.
Hal gave him a look. "Let's get in.."
Snake smiled sheepishly at the look he was given. “Alright, so it’s bad enough.” He said trying to make himself useful and opening up so Hal could go in and following him inside.
Hal walked in and looked around. His legs still felt slightly jelly like as he looked for a decent place to sit.
Snake noticed Hal’s legs falter and he went to help him at once, leading him to sit on one of the chairs that was close to the bed- Oh crap, a bed, can’t people be efficient anymore?! He thought as he contemplated sleeping in the carpet.
Hal sat down and cleaned his glasses. "What's wrong?"
“Noting, I’m going to go get the stuff.” He said, grabbing his gun and the key. “Don’t move” he said sternly as he was very paranoid that Hal might get in trouble while he was away.
Hal nodded and watched him go
After a strange event with rope, paper, bullets and rice Snake got Hal’s laptop, his own weapons and a beautiful cardboard box. He was back in a long while but of course loving his box.
Hal was curled up on the bed sleeping by the time Snake got back
“Hey there, I got your laptop.” He said and saw him there. He gave a sigh and placed the things down. He was originally going to grab the covers and lay down on the carpet but instead just went out again in favor for that bar downstairs since he’d never be able to sleep. He went out without his gun, however, preferring to leave it in Hal’s hands and just took a pack of cigarettes.
Hal rolled over and mumbled. "mmmn.." as he slept
