Chapter 2: Brotherly Affection
Both Kevin and Yoko tried harder to open the back door of the abandoned building, worried the zombies will come and get them. They slammed their bodies toward the door and kicked it. “I bet this door won’t open easily,” said Yoko while Kevin kicked against the door, ignoring her exclamation. Yoko looked around her surroundings to find anything that can be use to open the door. She found a ventilation shaft not far from the back door and rushed toward it “Looks big enough for us,” she whispered and turned her head toward Kevin.
“Um Officer! Officer!” he can’t hear her soft voice calling to him. Yoko increased the volume of her voice and eventually he heard her and turned his head to him “What?” Kevin looked at her with shrug. “I found this vent; I think it will lead us into the building,” she pointed to the hole just near her feet. Kevin quickly rushed to her side and noticed the medium size vent hole under the building wall. “I would end up breaking my leg if you don’t find this,” he looked at her with tiredness. She gave a slight smile and with her leg tried to kick out the grille that was barricading the hole. Kevin helped her kick the grille and eventually it came down. He took out the grille and threw it aside.
“Who’s going in first?” he looked at Yoko. “Um is it okay if you go first?” Yoko suggested. “Okay! I should encounter the danger first, before it comes to a little cute girl like you. Follow me closely, kay!” Kevin started entering the hole. Yoko’s cheek flushed red as she heard that, deep in her mind she thought that she’s gonna like this guy more than other guys that she had met before but can she trust him like she trust herself? ‘Could it be’ Yoko didn’t have any idea of that and then she followed him through the vent hole.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kevin managed to get out from the vent hole after pushed several times at the grille. He took a large gasp after stuck in the hole for 20 minutes and pulled Yoko’s hands to help her onto her feet. “It’s quite hot in there,” said Yoko without looking at him, her hand busily arranged her grey shirt and sweater that she wore. “The heat comes from our bodies and breathe. Hmm...It’s quite dark in here and smelly too,” Kevin quickly took out the lighter from his pocket and lit it. From the dim light, both of them can see the furniture is in unarranged position and blood stains are everywhere.
Yoko unthinkably grabbed his arm and felt a shiver with their new surroundings. She can sense something was watching them right now “Um…I think we entered the wrong place,” she said softly. Kevin can feel the weird feeling that she sensed and gave the lighter to Yoko “Here, help me hold this”. Then he took out his .45 auto handgun and reloaded it with his remaining ammo ‘I can’t waste it, only these left now’.
“Stick close with me,” he whispered and held her shoulder. She felt little bit shy but she trying to calm her feeling toward the intimate that she felt right now. “Come on!” he still held her shoulder and she used the lighter as a torch.
Kevin aimed his gun and both of them started walking at the hallway, both their eyes and ears kept alert from the danger surrounding them. They were walking so close together they can smell each other’s scent.
Suddenly something strange pasted behind them, they turned their head back but nothing there. “What was that?” asked Kevin. “We better get going, it’s very hard to see now,” said Yoko with fear in her eyes. They continued walking and the sound of something crawling came closer to them. Yoko turned her back and trying to see it clearly by the dim light the lighter in her hand gave off ‘Hmm...Nothing! It’s weird, what was that?’
“There’s nothing here yet, but I think it will get us if we still stay here, lets go,” Kevin whispered and continued walking. “Yuck! What’s this?” he lifted his leg and saw a sticky liquid under his right boot. Yoko bent down a bit and saw the liquid on the floor “I’ve never seen this kind of liquid before, looks like the saliva of-,” her ears caught the weird sound above her and quickly gazed to it. The licker was staring at her from the top of the ceiling and its saliva dropped down from its mouth, ready to attack her.
“Look out!” Kevin quickly dragged her when the licker tried to make a swing attack with its long tongue and both of them fell to the ground. He aimed to the licker and gave two perfect shots to its head “Go to hell, motherfucker!” The licker deadly falls to the ground and they quickly raised their feet from sitting position.
Another sound came from behind them and they noticed two lickers were staring at them, one on the floor and another one at the top of ceiling. “Shit! We are screwed here! Run!!” the twosome ran as the lickers chased them with a great speed. “Fuck off! They are too fast, quickly!” he grabbed Yoko’s arm and pulled her together with him. ‘Oh God! Please save us,’
“That leads to upstairs!” she pointed at the left corner of the hallway. The lickers were coming closer to them and they nearly reached the stair. “I don’t have any idea what that is . Doesn’t look like any normal lizard,” said Yoko with gasp. “Whatever it is, it can kill us and I don’t want any of us to be their meal,” Kevin snapped and pulled Yoko up the stairs.
“Run to the door!” Kevin pointed the door near the up stair. Suddenly, another licker came from the left of the second level and crawled toward the door. “Aww man!” Kevin rolled his eyes, and stopped running, Yoko stumbled behind him. Another two lickers came from downstairs and approached them slowly. “How we gonna get through this,” said Yoko nervously as she tried her best not to cry at that time and thought that she have to be strong enough to face all these thing if she wants to survive much longer.
Both of them facing in opposite directions, with their backs together. Kevin was facing the licker on the second floor and Yoko with the two lickers down the stair. “I’ll shoot this lizard thing and you quickly run to the door, okay!” he whispered to her. “Yes!” Kevin readily aimed his gun toward the licker and fired it twice, the licker fluttered on the floor and Yoko quickly ran to the door. She turned the doorknob and it opened. She found a wooden pole from the broken furniture and grabbed it.
Kevin turned his position to the two lickers down the stair and one of the lickers was trying to jump toward him. He gave a damaging shot to its chest and the licker fall on the stair but the wound didn’t inflict enough damage to stop it trying to give another attack to him. It swung its tongue toward him and he dodged to the other side. The licker tried to scratch his body and Kevin quickly shot it off. He didn’t notice another licker come from behind him and when Yoko saw this, she rushed to the licker and slashed it using the sharp edge of her wooden pole. The licker screamed in pain when the wooden pole stabbed through its body.
Kevin quickly dragged her to the second level and entered the door. He locked the door and barricaded it using the furniture in the room with Yoko’s help. From the inside, they can hear the wounded licker trying to smash down the door and both of them stepped backward.
After a several minutes, the sound stopped and both of them looked at each other. “Probably dead,” said Kevin with relief. “How you sure about that?” she asked softly. “It’s badly injured and not gonna make it,” his eyes gazed around the surrounding. “What are you looking for?” she blinked at him. “I’m wondering if there’s any candles in here,”
There’s only the moonlight shining through the window and he walked to another door and opened it. It was the kitchen area and he opened the each drawer in the kitchen to examine it. Yoko followed him to the kitchen and opened the cabinet above her.
She found two candles in there “Here, I found some,” she exclaimed and went over to him. She took out Kevin’s lighter from her pocket and lit them. Kevin took one candle from her hand and took it to the previous room. He put it on the table “Put the candle in the kitchen,” he ordered and she done it. Then she joined him in the other room.
Yoko saw him was sitting on the table near the candle and she walked past him to the small desk near him and put her knapsack on it. “Oh! I forgot the beer, can you give one to me?” he asked her. She took out a beer from her knapsack and threw it to him “Catch!” Kevin caught the can and raised his finger on top of his forehead “Thanks”. He flicked open the opener and drank from it. Yoko sat on the desk as her eyes gazed toward him. “Hey! You want a drink? You can have one,” he offered her. “Um...No thanks. I’m don’t drink that,” she smiled to him and then turned her head to the other way. Kevin arched his eyebrow and took another sip. Her shyness still not disappearing from her heart; she had never been together with an unknown guy in the lonely place like this. Her heart pounded faster and she only kept her mouth shut until Kevin started the conversation.
Kevin put the beer beside him and looked at the shy girl near him; he remembered the assault rifle team before and wanted to ask about it but he thought it is better to ask her another time, he didn’t want to disturb the good mood between him and the girl. “The city is gone now, I never expected this to be happening to me…to all of us. We can’t go back home again,” Yoko looked at him and saw the regret form on his face. “Every living thing turned into a cannibalistic creature. What’s happening to us now?” he asked her gently. “I don’t know Officer, I don’t know who was responsible for this disaster,” she replied with sadness in her eyes. Kevin can see the flame from the candle reflected in her beautiful eyes, he was captured by her appearance tonight. The light from the candles make her more womanly than her age. “It’s Kevin, Kevin Ryman. Call my by my name instead of officer. It’s more casual to me,” Kevin slightly smiled to her and intently gazed at her.
Yoko bent her head down, tried to hide her eyes from his gaze. Her cheeks flushed and her heartbeat became faster. “I forgot to ask your name since we played hide and seek together,” Yoko chuckled and cut- off his words. “Yoko…Yoko Suzuki,” she raised her head and smiled at him. “Nice name!” he sighed and curled his arm. He shifted his eyes from her and looked forward. “I’ve lost everything Yoko, my job, bar, friends and my family. I think they’re all dead now and became one of the undead. All of them robbed from me only in one night, I can’t imagine that,” tears began to leak from his eyes and he struggled not to show it in front her. Yoko felt sympathy; even she lost her parents since she was too small but she never felt too hurt because she didn’t remember their faces and spent her childhood time in an orphanage before she came to America to further her study.
“I know it’s hard to you to accept it…Kevin but I know you are stronger than me to face all of this,” she tried to comfort him. “Sometimes I feel there’s nothing left for me here. I always fail in my life, actually I’m lonely….even If I look happy but …I’m crying in my heart,” he didn’t know what power made him so outspoken about himself tonight. He never felt like this with anyone before “I don’t know why I’m telling you all of this even though I barely know you,” he turned his eyes toward her. “Maybe you need someone to help you cure your loneliness,” Yoko blushed and blamed herself for her unthinkable words ‘What are you talking about? Are you crazy?” she felt like slapping her cheek right now.
“Maybe its true…It’s true that I need someone by my side. I have searched for that person long before this and I’m not really sure if I found them or not,” his words made her heart pound faster.
She saw Kevin rise from his seat on the table and walked toward her. Yoko felt her cheeks reddened more than before and like to jump off of the desk. He gave a sweet smile that gave her butterflies in her stomach and let her body melt. His manly face and masculine features was exposed through the candle light, making each of her woman arousal increase. Kevin grabbed her soft palms with his ungloved hand and squeezed it gently. Yoko can feel the warmness of the hand. “It’s nice to talk with you, Yoko Suzuki,” after rubbing her palms gently, he released them and winked at her before he moved to the couch near the wall and laid his body on it. Yoko still stunned with his peculiar behavior, though she felt a little bit happiness in her heart although she felt shy for it.
Yoko rose out from her seat and walked toward the dresser in the room to find the warm blanket. She took out two blankets and covered Kevin’s body with one “Sweet dreams,” she whispered and laid another blanket beside the couch. She took her knapsack on the desk and put it on the blanket as her pillow and then laid herself near the couch. She can hear Kevin’s breathe while he slept, it sounded peaceful to her ears and she hoped they were going to survive another day. Yoko closed her eyes slowly and falls asleep
*************************************************************************
She opened her eyes and the bright light from the window greeted her “Um...Where’re my?” Her eyes felt a bit sore and noticed she was laying on the couch with a blanket covering her body. Her knapsack was on the table and Yoko raised her body slowly to a sitting position. ‘Maybe he put me on the couch but where is he?’ she scanned her surrounding and saw the furniture which were used to barricade the door were shoved aside and the door is opened.
She rose from her seat and walked slowly to the door, she poked her head out from the door to see Kevin “Kevin! Kevin!” she softly called for his name, afraid the lizard creature will come to get her. There was no answer from him and she stepped out from the door. She called his name louder but still didn’t get the answer.
She became anxious with Kevin’s absence, afraid the lizard thing had killed him ‘No, no…don’t think like that’ she tried to calm her bewildered feelings. Yoko walked down the hallway of the second floor “Kevin! Kevin!” her heartbeat became faster ‘Please, don’t leave me here. I need you’. Suddenly, someone patted her shoulder from behind. She was shocked and shrieked, Kevin quickly turned her body to face him and she nervously looked at him “Hey! It’s me,” he touched her scared face and then tried to hug her but Yoko shoved his hand gently “No…,” she gasped and avoided looking into his eyes. Kevin felt slightly embarrassed with her rejection “I’m sorry for surprising you; I didn’t mean to leave you”. “That’s okay... I-I’m not angry with you,” she felt glad that Kevin was still alive although she didn’t showing her feeling expression toward him. “Come on, let’s go to the room,” he held her shoulder and both of them went to the room where they spent the night together.
************************************************************************
Yoko sat beside her knapsack on the table and gazed at Kevin who was sitting comfortably on the couch. “Where did you go Kevin?” he turned his head toward her. “I’ve found the exit on the rooftop but we have to jump to the next building,” he explained. “Is there any other way to get out of here? I’m afraid that will be too dangerous for us,” she frowned. “I’ve checked the entire building, Yoko. There’s no way to get out of here except that. Don’t worry, I’ll help you,” he replied. “I’m sorry for putting you in trouble,” she said innocently. “Hey! Don’t mention that, I didn’t think that you are such a nuisance to me but I’m grateful to have you by my side. I can’t do it without you, Yoko,” he replied. His words gave a sweet feeling inside her heart and she never thought that he would be appreciating her unexpected presence.
Kevin suddenly smiled and chuckled. He bent his head down and brushed out his brown bang from his forehead. Yoko looked confuse “What so funny?” “No, I’m just feeling funny. How come I let you sleep on the floor, it really makes me feel bad,” he grinned. “So you thought that I didn’t need to show my care ness toward you?. I didn’t think that you are not a gentleman of what you did, sometimes ladies have to give their respect toward men. You are tired and I understood your condition,” Kevin heard with astonishment. He thought, she has her own personality as an Asian girl, her innocent, untouchable pure beauty, integrity, meek and the shyness those qualities caught his attention.
Kevin was silent for a while and shifted his sight from her. She looked at his face, afraid her words hurt him “Um...Did I say something wrong? I’m sorry if I-,” Kevin cut her “No! I agree with you. Sometimes women have to show their gentleness too and not always expecting guys to do all of this. I didn’t expect that you were so smart and outspoken too, Yoko. I’m hoping to get to know you better as well as we try to survive this unsuspecting journey,” he gave a meaning look through his eyes that make Yoko embarrassed. She tried to keep her coolness and thinking of another way to get out of his mysterious gaze, every time he gazed toward her, she felt so uneasy and wanted to hide every part of her from him.
She remembered the chocolate bars in her knapsack and took it out “Hey! You want this?” “Hmm?” Kevin frowned. “I thought you might be hungry so I’m giving this to you,” he rose from his seat and grabbed it from her hand “Actually I’m not a chocolate enthusiast but thanks, anyway,” he tore the wrapper and tasted it. “It’s been so long I haven’t eaten this since I was a teenager. Yes, I remember that, I used to eat this with my first girlfriend in high school. We celebrated Valentine’s Day, a stupid day for me, I guess. I don’t know why ladies are so excited with this and in the end, guys have to take them to exotic places, give the luxurious thing to them, I don’t want to waste my time and money on that,” he explained.
“Except for beer and cigarettes right?” Yoko gave a slight smile. “Yep! That’s right, baby. Hey! I’m sorry if I’m annoying you with my talk, I guess you are not agreeing with me about that,” said Kevin as he took another bite. “No, that’s okay. I’m just a simple girl. I can accept it,” her smile wider as she looked at Kevin, eating the chocolate like a small kid “Looks cute,” she whispered. Kevin looked at her “What?” “Um! Nothing!” she shook her head and jumped down from the table.
Yoko walked toward the window to see the view outside ‘Hmm… No zombies down there’ Yoko turned her head to Kevin who was finished eating his chocolate; he was probably too hungry for her thoughts. “I see no zombie down there. I think we can move out easily just now,” he joined her side and looked out of the window. “I wish that too. We have rested long enough here, better get going now,” said Kevin as he gazed to her. Yoko nodded and she went to her knapsack, prepared herself to get out from the room.
After resting in the room for several hours, they decided to move away from the building by following the route that Kevin mentioned. Both of them securely jumped to another rooftop and descended down the stairs of the second level. Actually Yoko didn’t feel optimistic of what they have done but with Kevin’s conviction, she believed that she will survive from this killing outbreak and escape from the city alive.
“Hmm...It’s dark here,” said Kevin with his eyes gazing around the second hallway. “Yeah, even though it’s bright out there. I have a bad feeling about this,” replied Yoko. “What’s wrong? You hear something?” he asked her. ‘No, but…the zombie, I think they react with light. They are inactive in daytime, we have seen before from the window,” she explained. He remembered the view and started walking down the hallway “Let’s go, quickly!” she followed him from behind.
They took a several steps on the hallway until they caught the sound of something falling came from behind them. “What was that?” asked Yoko as her head turned back. Kevin sensed something strange from the back door that they just entered and quickly grabbed her arm “There’s no time to check it, come on”. Another sound came from behind but it was louder than before together with a weak movement. “I think, the zombies. Run!” Both of them ran toward the door in front that leads to downstairs but it is locked. “Damn it! Fucking door!” he cursed and kicked hardly against the door. Yoko touched his broad shoulder, trying to remind him of the dangerous situation “Kevin, please calm down! We must hide from the zombies,” he stopped kicking the door and looked around him. He found another door just at the right behind Yoko “There’s a door! Come on!” they ran to the door and opened it.
It was a break room for the workers that used to work in the building. There were some lockers and double beds in there, he walked to the locker and opened it to examine. ‘It’s big enough to fit two people in it’. “Oh no! They’re coming,” cried Yoko and ran toward him. They can hear loud movements from outside like the zombies were able to smell them and wanted to enter the room. Kevin quickly entered the locker and pulled her in with him. He closed the locker and held her waist tightly from behind her. Yoko’s heart beat faster, unsure of what feelings that she was experiencing now either she was so shy, scared or passion. “Quiet!” he whispered into her left ear. She can felt his hot breathe against her neck that make of each part of her body wanting the lust touch from his. The warmness from his masculine body made her feel so comfortable with the position and when the zombies managed to enter the room, he held her waist tighter than before and pulled her body towards him more closely with his head bent down next to hers, watching the walking undead through the small gaps. Yoko let a small moan escape from her lips when he held her closely. She felt some kind of electric jolt between their bodies.
Kevin moved his head towards her neck and his nose was close to her smooth milky skin. He can smell her sweet scent and it urged his manly arousal to do intimate things toward her. He really wanted to kiss the smooth neck and bite it, let her moaned his name but he is obstructed, obstructed by their surroundings and afraid Yoko will misunderstand him. He glanced at her once she looked comfortable then he let half of his weight land on her back and his hand still held her closely. He wanted to feel the warmness, passion and the intimate of her body as long as they hide in the there or before he dies.
Yoko’s mind was haywire; sometimes she felt that she was obscene by him but she liked it even though she tried to ignore it. She tried to erased the bad thoughts from her mind about him, the RPD officer like him will not do that to her. She felt his ungloved hand fondling slowly against her belly, she wanted to yell at him but she was too weak to stop him because of the passionate touch that makes her want to be his belonging. ‘Please…stop it, stop it…I can’t hold it anymore,’ her heart cried but for sure he couldn’t hear it.
The zombies eventually moved out of the room and when she heard the last sound of their movement from the door, she desperately kicked out the locker door and ran out from it, forcing him to release her. She fell to her knees and gasped, with her head facing the floor and made her bangs fall against her face. ‘I don’t want to hide in the locker anymore…with him,’ she slightly blushed. He patted her shoulder and she looked up to face him “Are you okay? You’re awfully sweaty,” he asked her with a caring look. “Yeah, I- I ‘m okay,” “I know it’s hot in there, let me help you,” he helped her to her feet.
“Maybe the zombies are gone, let’s go,” Kevin grabbed her hand and Yoko quickly pulled away from his grip. He intently looked at her, wondered if she got mad with him after the locker incident. “Y-You don’t need to pull me…I can follow you,” he said looking into his face. Kevin understood her needs and nodded but he felt regret from her rejection maybe she thought that he wanted to sexually harass her or I other words rape her ‘I won’t let myself lose control toward you unless…I’m blinded by my unconsciousness blinds me., Kevin walked toward the door with Yoko following closely behind him. For him, she is the toughest girl to flirt with and untouchable unlike other girls he had me before. He had a strange feeling toward her that he couldn’t explain but he can’t deny that he is attracted to her now. Her appearance, maturity and kindness really caught his heart and mind. “She’s just like my sister,” he repeated the sentence several times in his mind.
To be continue.....
