I woke up later on in ‘our’ room. Axel was sitting at the computer desk when I looked over. He was typing something, though I couldn’t tell what. “Ax....el?” I asked; voice raspy from disuse.
He turned back to look at me. “Good to see you awake, Roxas.” He said, smiling kindly at me.
I tried to rub my eyes, but my limbs felt like lead and I couldn’t muster the energy to move them. Axel got up form across the room and sat down next to me. “How do you feel?” he asked, still hesitating even to touch me, for fear of rushing anything between us.
“Confused....” I mumbled, blinking my eyes in an attempt to clear my vision. “I remember flashes of us... But....”
Axel put a hand on my arm. “Relax. It’ll take time for your full memory to return. Don’t rush it.” He pulled the black silk sheets and dark blankets back up to my neck. “Just rest. It’s been a long day; and tomorrow will be longer.”
“Axel?”
“Hm?”
“What happened to me?”
The redhead sighed. “You always did go for the hard questions first...” he said, ruffling my blond bangs. “But I don’t know. You told me you were going to leave to find a past you didn’t remember, but before you even left the city you were knocked out and taken from us. It took so long to find you...” I could tell by his expression that it pained Axel to think of it.
“I’m sorry...”
“Don’t apologize for stupid stuff. And don’t worry, you’re safe now.” Axel got up and walked to the door I’d surmised was a closet. He re-emerged a moment later wearing a pair of black pajama pants with flames licking up the bottom edges. He walked around the room and got into the opposite side of the bed. He rolled away from me, facing the window.
I shifted backwards slightly. Though the room was comfortable, Axel radiated heat and I felt cold while away from him. When I ended up back-to-back with the redhead, he turned over; looking at me questioningly. “Cold...” I mumbled by way of explanation.
I saw his green eyes soften. “Typical.” He muttered with a shake of his head. He pulled his pillow over and tucked the blankets more tightly around me. As he lay back down, one arm around my shoulders kept me pressed against his warm chest. Axel ruffled my hair. “Now sleep.”
“Axel....”
“Sleep.”
I rested my head in the crook of his neck and closed my eyes. “Good night....”
“ROXAS!”
I smirked.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next time I awoke, the first thing I noticed was how cold it was. I glanced groggily out the window. I’d have said it was morning, but STILL the only source of light was the pink-and-golden moon. I reflexively pulled the covers close around me and resolutely put my head down on Axel’s nearby pillow, which smelled slightly like ash from a long-ago smothered fire. I didn’t want to get up yet; I always hated getting up.
A few minutes later, Axel showed up with a tray of food in his arms, still in his flame-embellished pajama pants. “Roxas?” he asked.
I groaned as I forced myself to sit up; my hunger more powerful than my urge to go back to sleep. I wiped at my eyes with the back of my hand. “Whaaaaat....?” I whined slightly.
Axel smiled. “Same old sleepy-head....” he said fondly as he sat on the edge of the bed and started munching on toast.
I edged over next to Axel -blanket still over my legs despite the fact that I still hadn’t changed clothes- and reached for a plate stacked with toast and scrambled eggs. I ate breakfast gratefully while leaning close to Axel in the cool room. I momentarily wondered if Axel kept it cool in the room deliberately; either to cool the heat that always radiated from him, or to make sure I was always near.
When we’d finished eating, Axel handed the empty tray and dishes to a Dusk at the door and shooed the strange creature away. Axel typed a quick note on the computer before he sat on the bed again. “Roxas? How do you feel about seeing everyone later today?”
I shrugged noncommittally. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Demyx, but the others I had met made me uncomfortable. I was unsure if I would be alright with anyone else in this strange group. “Whatever....”
“You’d be better off, I think.” He encouraged gently.
“You’ll be there?”
“Naturally.”
I nodded, comforted knowing I wouldn’t be totally alone. “Okay.”
Axel put a hand on my shoulder. “You’ll be able to meet a few new people. You’ll like them, I think.”
I leaned over onto the shoulder of my tall companion. I felt pretty comfortable with him by then, even with most of my memories of him missing. I felt him shiver slightly, which was strange because Axel was always inhumanly warm. I looked up at him. “Axel? Is something wrong?”
The redhead seemed to have more color on his pale features than normal, which was even MORE strange since he apparently lived in a world of endless night. He avoided my gaze by studying the ceiling above us. “I’m fine...” he assured me.
“Then look me in the eye.” I pressured him. He didn’t seem to be acting like himself.
He obliged, meeting my blue eyes with his peculiar green ones. He wasn’t lying to me, per say, but there was something, a shadow behind his eyes that said he wasn’t be completely open either. I couldn’t quite decipher the flash of emotion I saw in his eyes when he looked at me. I noticed him lean towards me, and then back up; a guilty and self-admonishing look on his face. After that, I suddenly understood how selfish I had been. I thought for the first time about Axel; what it had to be like for him to be near me when I had no idea who he was. What it would be like... If the person you cared about forgot you existed.
I put my hand on his. “Axel. Thank you.”
He smiled as he read the understanding in my eyes. He slid his arm around my waist and pulled me close against him. “I missed you, Roxas...” he mumbled as he buried his face in my hair. I let my arms wrap around his waist. He titled my face up to his. “I also missed this...” he said before tenderly laying his lips on mine. I closed my eyes. This was okay; this was right. Even with my silent consent Axel rushed nothing, gently running a hand through my hair and holding me close. He pulled back with a soft smile.
“Axel...” I mumbled, eyes blinking slowly. “I...”
Axel put a finger over my lips. “I know.”
He looked beautiful. I don’t know what was different about him then, but somehow, sitting there, Axel looked like some beautiful, otherworldly creature. New snatches of conversations floated through my mind like leaves on the wind.
“What’s your name, newbie?”
“It’s Roxas.”
“Then welcome to your new home, Roxas.”
I brought my hand up to stroke Axel’s cheek. “It’s good to be home.” I mumbled as I moved towards him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meilin: And that’s it for today, folks!
Axel: Bitch. Making them wait.
Meilin: Shut up or I’ll make you uke Luxord again. –Axel shuts up immediately- All right all, I’ve started typing chapter 3, and if I get 2 reviews I’ll update!
