Chapter One

Kingdom Hearts

Run

Note: This is written in a different style than normal for me. As such, it can be considered an a-typical storyline.

Second Note: Halfway through, Kairi will take over as main character. The reasons will be obvious when they happen, so anti-Kairi people may wish to stay clear. I do not like her, so I am trying to make myself like her by putting her through tough situations.

Third Note: Not a songfic, but inspired by a song.

Fourth Note: For those of you who do not believe change can happen the way it does in this fic, something very similar happened to a person I know, and love like a sister. Even the happiest of people can be changed to the darkest. The change a certain character experiences is my homage to my friend, as I cannot seem to tell her how much I worry.

Miaren Crowsdaughter: Sorry for confusing you, ^^; I talked with someone before using the word, and she said that although the usage wasn't the norm, that it would draw attention to the situation.

Pairings: Riku/Sora, Ansem/Riku

Disclaimer: The cast of Kingdom Hearts belongs to Square-Enix/Disney, not me. I only exhibit them for non-profit entertainment.

Summary: R/S As he was possessed by Ansem, Riku came to a startling conclusion, and now he’ll do anything to get back to Sora. To make matters worse Kairi is beginning to understand her past.

I’ll sing it one last time for you,

Then we really have to go,

You’ve been the only thing that’s right

In all I’ve done.

And I can barely look at you,

But every single time I do,

I know we’ll make it anywhere,

Away from here.

Snow Patrol – “Run”

Chapter One

A mixture of sadness and bizarre concern filled Sora’s mind. His friend’s mind, completely corrupted by Ansem, had miraculously saved them. Riku had saved him. In this place now, he was safe with Kairi. But he suddenly felt himself missing the contact of Riku, that boy who had always beaten him in every game they had played. He didn’t want to leave, but Leon forced him to retreat back to Traverse Town.

Sora looked at Kairi, who had been silent after arriving back to the town. “I… should thank you, Kairi… I thought I had lost myself… but you found me again,” he said quietly. Kairi smiled.

“I remember, now, I came from that place, Hollow Bastion. I remembered it the instant you were there,” she said quietly, “the instant…” she trailed off. “But my memory is still fuzzy.” She was a silent as him when Areith entered the room, looking solemn, but friendly as always when they met. Kairi looked at her with a quiet glance, and got up to leave with her.

“I might not be here when you wake up. Don’t panic if I’m not,” said Kairi quietly. “Go to bed, Sora… don’t think about it anymore.” She smiled worriedly, something too like Kairi used to be.

Riku saved him.

It was not an easy rest, when he eventually slept, he was back at his island. Riku was there with him, and they were alone. They were eaten. Riku was saying. EATEN. I saw it EAT them. It didn’t make any sense, Sora was about to say so when a pitch dark shape of a man’s hand latched onto his friend’s shoulder. Riku paled, and looked up. It wants to eat me, too.

Sora shot up in bed, shivering. “Riku,” he whispered. “I can’t… I couldn’t help you,” he said with a whimper, and he sniffed into his hands. The only light in the room was a faint glow from the lantern next to him. Who could have ever imagined he would end up here, one of three survivors of the destruction of the islands. His heart was aching at the thought of never seeing his best friend again.

The door opened again. Leon enter this time, his normally severe face was crinkled into concern and pity. “Are you going to be all right Sora? We can help get Riku back.” Everyone will help get him back.” Leon clutched his hand into a fist so hard it shook.

Riku saved him.

“Thanks, Leon.”

Leon nodded sharply, and turned to leave. “I met Ansem,” said Leon, stopping short of the door. “He was… ruler of the world I came from, you know. About the time the Heartless came, he lost his wife to a complication in childbirth,” he paused to look at Sora, his eyes were suddenly soft. “I have never seen a father love his child more than Ansem did.”

“Then why?”

Leon stared at him for a long time, his eyes unblinking. The scarred teen appeared to be thinking, but with so little variation in expression, it was impossible to tell. “The Heartless change people,” he said finally. “Sometimes for the best, sometimes not. Ansem was a different man when his wife died, more willing to take terrible risks.” An uncharacteristic shudder passed through his face.

“I can’t believe it,” Sora said firmly. “The type of person he would be— to harm Riku like that. To deceive my best friend. I swear I’ll help Riku. I have to.”

Leon looked at him, face again lacking expression. “You need to rest, Sora. We’ll help you, but tonight, you need to rest.” He turned around without another word, leaving Sora to silently vow revenge again Ansem.
