Epilogue...

Rouge sat quietly in the doctor's waiting room, waiting in fact for the results of her sonogram. She felt a great deal of nervousness, not for the baby's condition, but for her life. How did Amy handle babies? She couldn't do that. She supposed she should have had an abortion but she couldn't bring herself to kill the baby. She'd suggested keeping it to Sonic but the idea terrified her. She was 25, and she had her whole life ahead of her. She was now considering giving it up for adoption. She wondered what Sonic's reaction would be when she told him.

He was sitting beside her, nervously twiddling his fingers as he waited. He hated waiting, especially for something like this, waiting for the axe to drop. Although he had hidden such feelings behind his usual mask of confidence, Sonic was also terrified at the thought of fathering a kid this early in his life. It would mean the end of freedom for him, true freedom. Shadow may like a life like that, but not him, not this soon. That little, rebellious voice inside him told him to run far, far away, but he resisted the impulse. He was the good guy, and good guys didn't run away.

Rouge swallowed, "Um... Sonic? You know the... the baby?"

Sonic nodded, "Yeah?" he asked.

"You... you really want it, right?" Rouge asked him, nervously, "I mean, you really want this baby with me?"

Oh boy. A loaded question. He was screwed however he answered. Deciding that honesty was the greater evil at the moment, he tried to find a middle ground, "I just want you to be happy, Rouge,” he told her, squeezing her hand, "I... I don't know how good of a father I'd be, but I'll try my best..."

"I..." Rouge squeezed his hand back, "I don't think I'll be much of a mother," she said. She looked down, "Do you think... maybe the baby would be happier if..." she looked down.

"If what?" Sonic asked her.

"If we... gave it away?" Rouge asked, her voice very quiet.

"Maybe,” Sonic admitted, "The baby would have a more... ordinary life, at least. One that doesn't involve kidnapping attempts from Eggman. I know there's someone out there who would love the kid..."

Rouge visibly relaxed, "You see, I've been thinking about it for a long time. I'm just not ready for that sort of... thing... commitment... whatever."

"Me neither,” the hedgehog sighed, "I mean, I'm sure I could do it, but I'm not ready." Sonic looked down at his feet.

"So... we're going to... give it away?" Rouge said finally.

Sonic frowned and slightly nodded his head, “I... I guess so..." he replied softly.

"Miss Bat? Mister Sonic? The doctor will see you now," the receptionist told them suddenly.

Sonic sucked in a deep breath, blinked, and stood up, holding Rouge's hand tightly, "Alright... let’s do this."

They went into the office and sat down carefully, while the doctor shuffled papers for a few minutes, then sat up, "Miss Rouge, have you been... exercising?" she asked the bat.

Rouge thought about her job, "A lot," she said, "Why? It's good for me, isn't it?"

"Well, you see..." the doctor handed them a sonograph, "At some point between now and your last check, the umbilical cord of the baby... well..."

"Get on with it," Rouge said sharply, "What's wrong with the- our baby?"

"It was... strangled to death by its own umbilical cord," the doctor said simply.

A distinct paleness came to Rouge's face, "What?" she asked softly.

Sonic stared blankly at the doctor, letting his words register, "...Strangled?"

"The umbilical cord wound up wrapped around the infant's neck and..." the doctor finished.

Sonic felt numb inside as he stared at the picture, distantly wondering when it happened. The baby was dead. A sharp stab of guilt ran through him as he realized that he was actually relieved. This took away the burden of decision. Shuddering, he looked down at the ground, leaning against Rouge.

"I can refer you to an excellent councillor, Miss Bat," the doctor said, "But you'll have to come in for surgery to remove it..."

Rouge looked down at her feet. She felt partly responsible. She'd wanted this to happen. She really had. And now it had, she was... disappointed, "So... it's dead," she said.

The words had a grave finality to them. Sonic wrapped his arms around the bat's shoulder, holding her to his chest.

"I would like to draw your attention to the badly formed wings, and..." the doctor hesitated, "I think that had the baby survived birth it would have been... deformed. Not that that’s any consolation."

Sonic glared at the doctor, wondering why the hell she was talking about the baby being deformed after its death. Was that supposed to be comforting? Were they supposed to more accepting of the death because, oh gee, the child's life would have been bad anyway?

"I'm sorry, Miss Rouge," the doctor told her, "And you too, Mister Hedgehog. But... there's really nothing we can do now."

"I understand,” Sonic said softly, nodding to the doctor.

"I see..." Rouge said quietly. She stood up, very pale, "I'll... We'll go now."

Sonic silently walked after the bat, unsure what to say, unsure of what he was supposed to feel. Guilt stabbed him again. Could he have been a good father if he gave the kid a chance? He might never know now.

Rouge sat down again, "This is... quite a shock," she said finally. Tears were sparkling like diamonds at the corners of her eyes.

Sonic saw the tears as he sat beside her, holding her close. She may not have been ready to raise the child, but that didn't mean she loved it any less. Those tears said that clearly, "I'm sorry..."

"No, Sonic," Rouge said, "I'm sorry. I... I never wanted the baby. And now I do. I guess you always want... what you can't have..." Tears began to roll down her cheeks.

Frowning, Sonic reach over to wipe her tears away, "I know,” he told her, voice strained with his own sorrow, "I didn't want this, either," Sighing, he nuzzled her cheek. "We can still have a baby, Rouge. Someday, when we're ready. I promise." Sonic swallowed, surprised that he said that and even more surprised that he meant it.

Rouge smiled and nodded, still crying, "Some day..." she said quietly.

Froggy: Okay, people, it’s OVER. We really did try to make ARAAT6. Four times. But it would have sucked, what with vampires and torture and a Chaotix story that totally lacked any sex.

Harley: We tried. Really we did. But it kept messing up. But there are more important things to do now. See, over on a place called SSMB, there's something going called a SSA. Sonic Stadium Awards. You need an account, but hey, they're free. Why not nominate the ARAAT series for the fiction award, now it's complete?
