Chapter Six
The next morning, Zaba and Lina rose with the sun. They had sex that was slow and sweet before they got up for the day. Zaba knew that she would still be tender from the last few days and was extra gentle with her. Then they rose, ate a quick breakfast, cleaned up and then started to work on making Lina some new clothing. They worked together with ease and as they went along Zaba taught Lina more of his language, integrating sentences in to her lessons. She liked learning his language. She had always liked to learn new things, and learning to speak troll was very stimulating. Soon she was able to talk to him in short, crude sentences, which gave her a great sense of accomplishment.
While they fitted Lina for her new pants, Zaba had told her that they couldn't stay in Hillsbrad. If he was caught by the humans with her he would be killed on the spot, and that was something that she didn't want. They would go to Silverpine Forest to live. There Zaba would train her in the ways of the hunter. She was excited and proud that Zaba thought that she could be a hunter. She also was excited to be going to somewhere new. She had never been anywhere except Hillsbrad and daydreamed about what she would see and do when they got to the forest, while Zaba did the last of the fitting.
While Lina was working on sewing her clothing together, she suggested that they go to her home and see if there was anything salvageable there for their trip. She secretly hoped that her father's old gun was there, so they wouldn't have to buy a new one. She told Zaba brokenly what she had seen that awful day. While she recalled the details of what happened she sobbed for the loss of her father and little brother Toby. She told him of her heartbreak, and that if it hadn't been for him she would be dead with them. She felt that him coming to her like he did saved her life. He gave her something to live for.
Zaba inwardly cringed when she told him all that had happened to her and her family. He knew that if she had known that he was indeed there that day and was involved, that she would no longer trust him. She would even try to run away again or worse, kill herself. He didn't want to think about losing Lina just when he found her. She was a treasure that he did not want to lose. He hoped that she never found out about his involvement that day, so Zaba told her not to be too disappointed if the gun or anything of value wouldn't be left. He also told her that the horde contingent would have either taken anything of value or most likely burned it to the ground in hopes that she would change her mind about going to her farm, but she wouldn't be deterred.
After some prodding from Lina, he agreed to go as long as he could scout the area first, for any activity from either the horde or the alliance. He wanted her to stay in the cave with Tibol, while he was gone. When she agreed to his offer, he told her that he would go that very evening, when the sun went down.
Once Lina was finished sewing, she put on her new leather armour. She kept the shirt that Zaba had given her underneath the leather tunic so that she wouldn't chafe, tucking it into her pants and down her leg as well. The pants and tunic were made a little loose-fitting for that purpose. The boots that they fashioned for her were a perfect fit, and with the left over leather Zaba pieced together a crude cloak for her, to keep her dry in the rain.
Later that day when the sun had fully gone down, Zaba readied himself to make the trip to Lina's farmstead. He had almost left the cave when a thought hit him. “Which way is your home, Lina? he asked. He thought that it might make her suspicious if he just left without asking her for directions. When she pointed in the direction of her home and the other buildings there, Zaba pulled her in for a quick, hard kiss and then disappeared into the night.
Lina settled in for the night and waited for Zaba's return. She shivered from the cold, even though there was a fire at the mouth of the cave, Lina had become accustomed to Zaba's presence, and missed him now that he was gone. She decided to call Tibol over to keep her warm. When he laid down with her, he rolled over onto his back, so she could scratch his big belly. She laughed at him, because he reminded her of an old dog that her family had when she was a little girl. She couldn't help but to start crying again, when she thought of that time and her family. She would never hear her father tell her how much she looked like her mother again, and she would never be able to see her little brother again. She missed his rambunctious behavior, and his sweet little face. Wrapping her arms around Tibol, she cried herself to sleep. Tibol good-naturedly lay as the human girl hugged him tight, wetting his fur with her tears, and waited for his master to come back.
Zaba crept up to the farming town that used to be Lina's home and found just what he expected. Most of the homes had been burned to the ground, the only structure that was left standing was the barn that was behind what was left of Lina's home. He scouted the area first to see if there was any activity, and when he was sure that there was none, he searched the barn for anything of use, but only found horse feed and straw. Leaving the barn, he walked over to where her home's foundation remained and looked to see if there was anything near that survived the fire. He found some of the bedding that had been hanging on the clothes line, and some of what looked like a child's toys. He took the heaviest of blankets off of the line. It smelled heavily of smoke, but it would be serviceable for when they made a new home in the Silverpine forest. When he walked around the front of what was left of her house, Zaba found a gun lying on the ground, where Lina had been knocked out cold by Maryann.
“This would be her father's gun.” Zaba though and picked it up. He didn't see the bullet pouch anywhere, but he knew that she would be able to make a new one anyways. He would need to buy some new bullets for her when they reached the Silverpine Forest. He wasn't sure what he would do with her while he went into Sepulcher for supplies. Zaba guessed that he could leave her at a little secluded spot that he knew of, that was a mile or two from Sepulcher. It was in the hills and there they could settle down and build a little house. She could have a little garden and they would have plenty to hunt. At first she would need a lot of help with her technique, but he felt that she was up for the challenge. She also seemed to have an affinity for animals, if her interaction with Tibol was any indication.
Finding all that could be salvaged, Zaba was about to head back to their camp when he spotted the burnt and mangled bodies of her family and friends. Knowing that she would want to come back here to bury the bodies of her family he went in search of a shovel with which to dig graves. He found one a stall of the still standing barn. He also grabbed the remaining bedding on the clothes line for burial shrouds. Placing them near the bodies he headed back to the cave to tell Lina what he had found.
Upon arriving at the cave, Zaba found her asleep with an arm wrapped tightly around Tibol. Her cheeks were still damp with tears, and her nose was red from crying. His heart broke for her, but he also knew that life near contested areas was harsh, and death was an inevitable part of life. Hating to wake her, Zaba knew that it would be best to bury her family and friends under the cover of darkness. He didn't want to risk getting caught during daylight. So he woke Lina up, and told her what he had found. She started to cry when he told her that he found some bodies in the road. Taking her into his arms, Zaba comforted her as best he could, hugging her and letting her cry for as long as she needed.
When Lina finally stopped crying she told Zaba that she was ready to go bury her family. “Are you sure about this?” Zaba asked her. She nodded that she was, and they left to care for the dead.
They worked well into the night, digging graves, cleaning the dead and saying a few last words over each person before covering them with dirt. Lina made some makeshift grave markers, for each grave. She had a final cry for her father and little brother, then with the sun just coming over the horizon, Lina and Zaba returned to their little cave, with Tibol in tow.
They made love that day and slept till the evening, getting up to have supper. That night they packed up all of their belongings and cleaned out the cave. Lina would miss their little home, for that is what it felt like to her. She knew that it wouldn't be any good to them in the winter, but she would miss it nonetheless.
“It will be best to travel at night, when there is less traffic on the roads to Silverpine.” Zaba told her. “I don't want to risk anyone seeing us together. If your people see us, they'll kill me. If my people see me, they'll kill both of us, if we're lucky.”
What Zaba couldn't fit into his back pack, he bundled into the blanket that he took from Lina's farm. Giving her the bundle he inspected her one last time. She was armoured as well as could be expected for now, and she had her father's old gun strapped to her back. She would need a good melee weapon soon but that would come in time. He smiled at her, and was rewarded with a big beautiful smile from her. Zaba knew then that he loved her. She was beautiful, brave, curious of the world out there, and was willing to try anything. She was his match, his soul mate, and he would fight to keep her at all costs.
With that thought, Zaba took Lina's hand and they went off into the night to travel to the Silverpine forest.
What they didn't know was they were being watched as they left the cave.
