Chapter 13
A/N: I know you haven't seen chapter names again but by now, these being the first 300 pages of the story I'm just dying for it to catch up with the current times. So I'm in a bit of a rush, sorry.
Hal nodded slowly and swallowed a little. "O...ok.." he said scared of how Snake was acting
“Good, cause I think we are nearing land soon.” He said, “Just a few more hours, I think you should get some sleep, if I try I’ll throw up.” He said, signaling Hal to wait there where he was sitting, possibly lay down.
Hal looked at him worriedly and nodded taking off his coat to use as a pillow. He laid down and stared at Snake before falling asleep
It was a long time before Snake woke him up again. “I’ll have a lifeboat, when I call you you’ll move to where I tell you to and wait in it, I’ll be soon there with the kid.” He said, moving away from Hal to get to work on that.
Hal nodded. "Ok.." he said. "Snake..?"
“Hmmm?” The man said, turning to Hal so he could tell him what he needed before he had to go infiltrate another damn ship, God how he hated his job every once in a while.
"A...Are you afraid of me now..?" Hal asked looking up at him.
“Afraid… me, you insult me, Hal” he said with a huge grin on his face.
Hal looked at him. "Because of Liquid i mean.."
“Not really.” He said, leaving to get this all done. However the truth was that he was more afraid of leaving Hal alone.
Hal sat up and waited for him to call
The easy part was the lifeboat, getting his hands on it was a walk in the park in comparison to going to get Sunny, but he managed to do it, thankful that these men where not expecting a mercenary spy. He had to sleep Sunny with the chloroform, however, to make sure she didn’t make a sound, and called Hal.
Hal jumpped a little when his codec went off. "You ready?" he asked standing up and grabbing the bags.
“Yeah, we need out of here now, they’re convinced she’s still in the cabin.” He said, carrying the limp kid to said lifeboat. He was a little worried about how they’d man it around this ship but it couldn’t be a science.
Hal headed up the stairs. "Ok where are you?" he asked looking around as he walked up
“Wait a moment” he said, as he had come back down to get Hal. He led him to where he’d prepared a lifeboat to lower. “I need your help, I can’t pull this into the water alone” he said, pushing the boat using the ropes with one hand and carrying Sunny with the other.
Hal nodded and helped Snake get it into the water. After they all got in safely, Hal held Sunny while Snake steered. "Where are we headed?" he asked after a while.
“Heh, Fuerteventura, pretty nice this time of the year too.” He said, as if he looked forward to being there for at least a few minutes. The good thing about doing this in the cloak of the night was that they might even sneak past coastguard.
Hal nodded. "Sounds delightful." he laughed
“It is, people travel to see this place” he said, while taking them there with not much ease but he’d live. He was looking at the way he could seen the shapes in the shadows at a distance.
Hal nodded and sat with Sunny. He looked around at the dark shapes around them then up at the night sky.
Snake slowed them down so he could test the water as he had an idea how much rocks there had to be here judging by the wave sound. “Damn it, I think we’re going to get wet.” He said, looking at Hal’s laptop for a moment before leaping out of the boat and pulling it by hand.
Hal looked at him "Need help?" he asked
“No, I have this, we’re already there.” He assured the man and pulled it effectively away from the loud water impact noise and to the shore. Once he was sure it was firm on the sand he went to help Hal with everything.
Hal got some of the bags and picked up Sunny. "Where are we going to stay?"
“There’s foliage to camp… twice… but I’d rather know I can get you to a hospital, so that’s the first thing I want to find.” He told the man after grabbing the rest of the bags and lifting them above water level until there was no more possibility of them getting wet.
Hal followed suit and walked with him onto the beach.
“We need to leave this archipelago if we want to get to Russia.” He said, in a conversation manner and kept walking so that they could go to a hospital. Finding the place was not the complicated part, the complicated part was making up an elaborate excuse for the nurses.
Hal continued to walk with him. "Why do you insist on me going to the hospital..?" he asked
“Because my beloved, wont-quite-die-just-yet sibling whom I love with all my sarcasm said I should.” He said, trying not to sound angry but he could burn Liquid alive right now.
Hal blinked a little and nodded. "He said I needed a doctor?" he replied
“No, he implied that there was something wrong with you, physically I mean, I need to know what it is before I snap his neck in fifty pieces… Damn Liquid.”
"But him being the secretive one he didn't tell you what." Hal said looking at Snake
Snake was only feeling angrier at the man, and he hoped he could show him everything he’d stupidly accomplished. However right now he had another preoccupation in mind. He was soaked in a hospital and the cold was driving him trough a wall.
Hal was waiting next to him for one of the nurses to call them in. he took off his coat and draped it over Snake's shoulders. "There...That should help.." he said offering a meek smile
“Thanks” he said, following him as he was not exactly going to leave him alone when he could have something he could then not tell Snake what it was and – alright, he needed to relax.
One of the nurses came out and called for Hal.
Hal stood up and handed Sunny to Dave. "I guess i'll be back when they're done.." he said
Snake took the girl and leaned her against him while he watched the bags. “I guess.” He said, not liking it that Hal was going to be pulled back to some place and he was going to be stuck here.
Hal gave him a smile before the nurse took him back.
Snake waited, which didn’t do him any good since he ended up picturing what Hal could have and it all came back to him dying. It was not a pleasant thing to think about. He knew he would not go on without him.
After about two hours the nurse came back out and looked at Snake. "You with Mr.Emmerich?" she asked holding a clipboard.
“Yes” he said, getting up and looking at her in a ‘If he’s dying tell me quickly’ way. “What does he have?” he asked, grimacing when he knew it came out different then he would have liked.
"Well I think he would rather tell you in person so i came to get you." She said leading him and Sunny to Hal's room.
‘That bad?’ he thought, mentally prepared for the worse. He knew it was going to hurt a lot. But for now he just concentrated in taking Sunny there. He wondered what he’d do alone.
Hal was sitting on one of the beds. He looked up when Snake entered and watched as the nurse left and closed the door.
Snake saw him sitting, well that was a good sign… Then again, immediate death was better in some aspects then a slow one. There he was again. He placed Sunny on the bed so that she’d be more comfortable. “How are you feeling?” it felt different when he asked that, like he was separating his ribs a distance one from the other but with no pain.
Hal looked up at him. "I'm fine." he smiled. "The doctor said most if not all came back negative." he added. He looked better than he did when they were on the boat
“So was it really the seasickness?” he asked not really wanting to let his hopes up but still felt so much relief. Also he noted he was smiling, despite the fact that he didn’t remember telling his body to do so.
Hal smiled back. "She ran every test on me." he said. "One she said I have to come back for since they didn't get the results yet."
“Which one?” he asked trying to sound hopeful but he was quite sure Hal was healthy, maybe it was the contagious way he was smiling.
"She didn't tell me." Hal said
“Alright, when did she say you had to come back for it?” he asked, as he had plans to book a more legal ship or a plane. He hoped this did not involve his ex.
"About a week." Hal replied.
Snake groaned at that. Where were they to stay a whole week. “Are you free to go until then?” he asked, hoping that he could grab a place somewhere. He was pretty sure they had the chance to stay over at a room here.
"I think so." Hal said stretching. "I hope you weren't worrying too much.." he added
“Not really” he lied. But then didn’t really know what to say so he merely stayed silent. His heart rate had calmed and he felt better then on the ship.
Hal gave him a look. He always knew when Snake was lying to him. "Don't baby me Snake." he said. "What else did Liquid tell you?"
“Well, Ocelot made some changes to your body.” He said, as he was pretty sure that Hal was going to feel uncomfortable to know his body had been tampered with. “Also told me that I had to learn to use protection when I took you and that was where I thought you might be sick or something.” He explained.
Hal nodded and sighed. "Why didn't you say anything..?"
“I was not going to be able to relax to tell you about it.” He said, feeling far better. Maybe he should take the chance to tell him everything. “Hal, do you remember the Foxdie virus?” he asked. “At first I thought that’s what he meant.”
"I remember.." Hal replied with a nod. "I really didn't know Ocelot injected some of Liquid's DNA into me.." he said softly
“It’s acting up since recently, that’s why that was my first suspicion.” He came clean. Besides, no use not telling Hal in case the man needed him to do field-work for him; he would need to know where Snake’s weaknesses where less he failed him.
Hal put his arms around him. "I..I didn't know.." he said clinging to him.
“I know you didn’t” he said, feeling a little guilty now that he knew Hal would worry over this and he knew it wasn’t fair especially since there was little they could do about it. “But we both knew it would come down to this to begin with.”
Hal nodded slowly. "I know but...I don't want it to be this way.."
“Neither do I.” He told the man running his hand on his back soothingly. He was not going to remark that this was the way things where because it was useless common knowledge. “What’s wrong?” asked the small voice beside Hal. “Hal’s pet has a new kind of flu.” Snake clarified.
Hal looked over at Sunny and patted her head. "He'll be ok..don't worry.." he said giving a soft smile.
Sunny nodded and rubbed her eyes unsure of what had happened. Still she was getting used to being in one place and suddenly being in the other. Even when she was getting tired of it and didn’t like it that much.
Hal looked at Snake. "Let's get checked out of here and find a place to stay."
“Alright” he said grabbing the things and turned to Sunny. “Can you focus enough to walk?” he asked her, she blinked at him and got up on her feet before nodding in a little ‘I’ve-done-something-right’ smile.
Hal got up and walked out with them. he signed out and left the hospital.
Snake noticed the hour when they left and the sky was a shade of orange and red. He walked to the area where most hotels where situated, bags in hand and making a mental note of the location of the hospital.
Once settled in the hotel, Hal sat on the bed and sighed. "Snake you should lay down for a little bit.."
“Probably right” he said, looking at how Sunny explored the place. ‘Does she ever stop doing that to new places?’ he thought to himself then walking to the bed. He laid down and sighed. “Thank you god…”
Hal laid with him. "I want you to feel better.."
“Do already.” He said, placing a hand on Hal’s shoulder and leaning to look at him. He realized the amount of emotion he put into words there and regretted it immediately. “Bed’s really comfortable, I mean”
Hal nodded and looked at him. "I'm glad.."
Snake didn’t last awake for long. He soon gave up under the weight of his health, the trip and his own lack of sleep with the knowledge that he’d be feeling his muscles in the morning.
Hal smiled and watched him sleep before going to tend to Sunny's needs.
Sunny had taken a look at the room and was back from the bathroom in the hopes that she’d be able to call Hal’s attention to what the room had. She saw Snake sleeping and got curious to see if she could wake him up, maybe poke him a little.
Hal quickly distracted her. "We need to let him rest a bit.."
“Because of the flu” She said with a nod. Then went to Hal. “Did you know we had some weird machine in the bathroom?” She asked Hal.
"What?" Hal asked looking at her.
“A creepy thing that shoots out water.” She said, shrugging. Then walked to the door. “Can we go take a look around?” she asked, wanting out of the room once she noticed it was boring.
"Sure." Hal replied. "Let's go to the lobby and find something to eat." he said with a smile
“Ah yes, I’m starving.” She told him as if she was happy to finally be able to let out that feeling. She followed Hal at once.
"Me too." Hal smiled as he led her downstairs.
Sunny gladly walked around keeping close to Hal in this new place and wondering what they where going to eat, also she wondered if she could get her hands on something warm for their snake’s flu.
Hal looked around and saw some vending machines. "Do you want some candy or chips?" he asked.
“Candy sounds good!” she cheered, not paying any attention to the fact that it could probably make her stomach ache at this hour, still, Hal was offering it to her so she was allowed to have it.
Hal smiled and go her some chocolate. He got some chips for himself and some hot coffee for Snake.
“Did you know that caffeine is not good.” She asked while munching on her chocolate and smiling at him.
"I did but that's why i got decaf." Hal said patting her head with a smile
“Ah” She said, pretending to know what decaf was for now. Still she just finished her chocolate and now she just looked around, wanting to get this boredom over with quickly.
Hal put a top on the coffee and handed it to her. He saw something out of the corner of his eye and quickly looked at her. "Take this to Snake. I'll be up soon. Go quick and be careful.." he said handing her the chips as well. He looked around as a meerkat would do if it sensed a threat nearby.
Sunny smiled at him, thinking he meant her spilling the contents and carefully carried it to where Hal’s pet was sleeping. She beamed at being trusted with his care and thought about how she would wake him up to give him this, perhaps she could scare him.
Hal waited until she was gone to investigate what he saw. He hid around a corner and looked seeing that just outside the hotel was Ocelot and a few of Liquid's Frog soldiers. Hal had to duck quickly after one of them looked into the windows. 'damn damn damn..' He tried sneaking past the window when one spotted him (!) and ran inside. Hal ran as fast as he could towards the elevators as they chased him.
Sunny walked up to Snake with the coffee and smiled while she sneaked to him as quietly as she could, placing a hand on his arm to shake him suddenly. However not as suddenly as he grabbed her wrist. She squealed and giggled at once. He was compelled to smile at the girl then looked around. “Where’s Hal?” he asked her.
Hal tripped on one of the rugs and winced trying to get to his feet as fast as possible. He could see the elevators as he got up and right when he was about to dash towards them when the Frogs shot him with a tranquilizer dart. Hal fell down again losing the feeling in his legs. '...not now...I was so close....' he thought to himself as everything went black. Ocelot walked over with the rest of the soldiers and picked the scientist up slinging him over his shoulder. "Get to the DAP." he ordered as he walked towards the exit to the hotel with Hal. He ripped the dart from Hal's thigh and tossed it on the ground.
“He’s downstairs.” She said with a smile at him and then Snake got up, taking some of the coffee. “Let’s go get him then” he told the kid who apparently was feeling mischievous. He walked a while before putting a hand on her shoulder to stop her. He bent down and picked up the dart. His heart bothering him again. “Wait back in the room” he told her, handing her the key. “I’m serious” she didn’t like being talked to like that but still did as told.
The team got into the helicopter and took off. Ocelot grinned and watched out of the opening waiting for Snake to show
Effectively Snake went out said entrance, quickening his pace as soon as he heard the helicopter engine. He looked at it and bit his lip thinking ‘Shit, one minute, one fucking minute!’. He pulled out his gun and took aim, desisting as soon as he knew he was going to achieve nothing.
"hover." Ocelot ordered. He looked down at Snake smirking. "Snake!" He called down to him making sure Hal was able to be seen
Snake pulled the gun up again to shoot Ocelot but after three misfires he became afraid he’d hit Hal instead. His only choice was to either get on the vehicle or to get something on it to track it. However he had nothing of the such. Then he thought about something ‘The codec.’
"Bye Bye!" Ocelot smirked using Hal's limp hand to wave.
“This guys going to die” he mumbled to himself in chest-burning fury. He then went to pace in his place and panic. What was he supposed to do? He tried leveling his head and ran out to localize and seize something to follow them with, all this while calling his pretty ex to, one, get yelled at and two, beg for help.
The DAP flew off. Hal started to come to. "hmmn..!" He sat up and looked out. "Snake!!" he called struggling against Ocelot's grip.
Snake wrestled a motorcycle out of the hands of a very, /very/ unhappy bystander. It may even have looked like he pulled it out of thin air – or maybe it was his own panic. The problem being that no matter how much he followed this helicopter they’d get away because of that mystical thing called ‘water’.
Ocelot pulled Hal back in by his hair. "You should listen to what I say if you want to keep on living." he hissed as he shot Hal with another dart.
Snake noticed that Hal stopped screaming so he made use of the codec immediately. However he noticed the man did not respond and it was doing a number on his already irregular anxiety.
When Hal woke up he was once again in a square room but this time on a table. "..." he looked around and saw Ocelot and one of the scientists talking in the corner of the room.
By the time in which Snake was already trying to convince his ex to getting him airborne. “How many times do you want it?” “Fine, fine…” was the highlight of their conversation as she was already on the way to pick him up. He was planning to contact Hal on the codec to get the closest idea to a location possible.
Hal sat up slowly which made Ocelot turn. Hal noticed the scientist had a camera set up in front of him.
