A bright light flares, the hiss of escaping compressed air, a man in a white bio-hazard suit, cold metallic walls, and one young female who just awoke from a cryogenic sleep; this is Vault 0.5.
Tasha slowly opened her eyes and instantly regretted it, awaiting her was a harsh glaring light that seemed to bore into her skull.
After a few seconds she tried again and succeeded in not being blinded; she carefully tested her legs which felt fuzzy and distant, like they were no longer attached to her body.
After a few minutes she leaned forward from her padded resting spot and observed the room more closely.
Cold gray metal leered at her, and various lab equipment was scattered around the room and over in a corner 3 men in white bio-hazard suits were standing around some machine and talking amongst themselves.
She attempted to speak up and her dry throat managed only a croak.
The men stopped talking and turned to regard her.
"Subject 1-1-7 appears to be awake doctor", one of the men stated out loud.
"Excellent Pearson, Samuel go get some water for the subject and some medications to help her fully wake-up", ordered the man in the middle of the trio.
As one of the men left, the one Tasha assumed was called Pearson approached her with a thin metallic cylinder in one hand.
As he approached he quickly raised it to her eye level and pressed a switch, Tasha jerked back reflexively as a yellow light cut into her eyes.
Pearson moved the flashlight from eye to eye carefully studying her eyes' reactions to the light.
He turned off the light and turned to the "doctor", "Doctor Jenson, the patient appears to have not suffered any eye damage from the cryogenic chamber."
"Ok Pearson, ready the U-F-M-P lab we should begin the experiments shortly", replied Doctor Jenson.
Tasha opened her mouth to ask a question, but the other man who had left earlier returned and handed her a plastic cup with water.
Tasha greedily drank and then yelped as a needle was pushed into her side.
"Nothing to worry about, just injecting you with some muscle relaxants", the man called Samuel told her.
Tasha nodded her head and let him finish the injection, as he walked away with the spent needle, Jenson approached her with a clipboard in one hand.
"Subject 1-1-7, name Tasha, age 21, blood type AB, hair color light brown, eye color light blue, skin tone slightly tan, race Caucasian, country of origin Romania, born August 13,2055 in Washington D.C.", as Doctor Jenson rattled more facts about her off the clipboard, Tasha's thoughts swiveled inward and she tried to remember how she had ended up in this laboratory in the first place.
As Jenson finished with a brief history of what her life had been earlier, he ended with the statement, "August 13, 2076, subject volunteered for experimental testing at Vault 0.5 in exchange for her family's spot inside vault 120."
Tasha attempted to speak once more and managed in croaking out, "Where....am....I"?
Doctor Jenson regarded her with a stone face, "I already stated that you were in Vault 0.5".
"Why am I here", Tasha replied as talking became easier.
"You volunteered for testing in return for your family's insured safety within Vault 120".
"What kind of experiments", Tasha warily asked.
"We have determined that you are physically fit for testing the U-F-M-P system. Here shortly we will begin the experiment in the adjoining lab, today you will only be prepped and later you will be given time to fully recover from your cryogenic sleep."
Before Tasha could ask any more questions, Pearson returned and walked up to Doctor Jenson.
"The lab is ready, sir", Jenson reported.
"Excellent as always Pearson, please lead subject 1-1-7 there now".
Pearson turned to Tasha and said, "Follow me please."
Tasha stepped out of the tank and almost fell, except Samuel quickly stepped forward to catch her.
"Careful there ma'am", he told her as he helped her stand upright.
"I must not be over the effects of the chamber yet", she replied and offered Samuel a smile.
Samuel smiled back and a grunt of disapproval from Jenson reminded Tasha that she had been ordered to follow Pearson.
As Tasha left the room Pearson led her down a metallic hallway and made an abrupt left; as she rounded the same corner she saw it was another short hallway with a large hatchway at the end.
On either side of the hatchway were two guards in large suits with automatic rifles in hand.
The suits had sharp angles and looked obscenely heavy, but as Tasha got closer she noticed the faint buzz of electricity and motors; realizing that the men had some sort of electric powered suits on she stopped to study one of them, but Pearson grabbed her arm.
"Please leave the guards alone and follow me."
He led her through the hatchway and into a large chamber with a metal gurney in the middle.
On the opposite side of the room was another hatchway, to the left of the gurney was a large one-way window which was tinted out on the side she saw, and to the right of the gurney was a larger square hatchway.
"Please lie down on the gurney 1-1-7", Pearson asked as he opened and entered the hatchway opposite the entrance.
He returned shortly as Tasha lowered herself onto the gurney and wondered to herself why she was being so obedient; she was brimming with questions, but felt light headed.
It suddenly dawned on her that the injection might have contained more than muscle relaxants.
As she wrestled with the disturbing thought, Pearson returned with a large wheeled cart loaded with machinery and needles full of liquids.
He set the wheeled cart next to the gurney and reached underneath the gurney. He came up with straps and started strapping Tasha to the gurney.
Tasha asked," What does U-F-M-P stand for?"
"It stands for Un-Familiar Mating and Pregnancies, a system developed to inseminate normal humans with the offspring of radiation mutated creatures to determine the effects on reproduction."
As Tasha stared at him with horror in her eyes, he injected her with a needle of clear liquid.
Tasha suddenly felt very sleepy and dozed off as Pearson said, "We are ready to begin Doctor Jenson."
"Very well, proceed."
