Prologue

I look up across the interior of the pelican.

“You ready?”

A dusty-red colored Spartan sitting across from me turns towards me. The Spartan’s name was Emily, and she and I formed Crimson, a special ops team deployed by the UNSC Infinity here on Requiem.

“Always…” Emily replies back to me.

I break eye contact with her to quickly inspect my weapons.

When I finished, I looked up to see Emily staring back at me.

“What’s wrong?” She asked slightly concerned. “You checked your weapons three times before we got on this pelican, and that last time marks the fifth time you’ve checked them.”

Even though we were both wearing our helmets which made it impossible for Emily to see my facial expression, this was far from our first mission together, and she had developed an uncanny understanding of me.

“Yeah something’s bothering me: this whole mission is bothering me.”

“Is there a problem Spartan Kyle?” This was my commander over the comms. He oversaw all of our missions from Infinity.

“Commander this can be nothing more than a trap by the Covenant. There is no way Spartan Thorne is alive at this point if he was captured by the Covies three days ago. They don’t take prisoners, and it’s doubtful to think he escaped from them if he was captured."

A few days ago, Spartan Thorne was declared MIA. Now, close to 72 hours later, his emergency transponder activated on the surface of Requiem, in the middle of a Covenant camp.

“I hear you, but we’ve scanned the area around where the signal from Thorne’s transponder is coming from, and there’s only a light Covenant base around the area. If it is a trap, it's a foolish one."

"Roger that sir."

“30 seconds to the drop zone!” The pilot of the pelican yells over the comms.

Emily and I stand up to move to the back of the pelican. I stand close to her, and breathe deeply. It didn't matter what the commander said, this was a trap, I could feel it.

"Hey, if this is a trap..." Emily suddenly says to me, "those Covenant will regret the day they took us prisoner."

After a moment, I reply energetically, "Yeah, and they'll definitely pay for taking Thorne too.”
