Falling in Love with Hate

The battle was a long one. Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo, were fighting Azmodan, the Lord of Sin, to try and keep him from becoming a Prime Evil. And they were failing. Tenshi, the newly-discovered Spirit of Love, wanted to jump in and help the brothers, but Mephisto ordered her to stay hidden. Things were starting to get heated, now, and Azmodan seemed to be focusing on Mephisto specifically. Suddenly, the Sinful Lord rooted his feet to the ground, and began charging an energy blast. The one called Love felt the blood rush from her face, and she knew she had to disobey Hatred’s orders. She summoned her true form, an Angel with pink wings, and she charged the battlefield. Just as Azmodan fired his energy blast, she landed in front of the male she had become close to. She screamed, and slumped to the ground. The yelp of her name in Mephisto’s voice rang out through the thick dust cloud. Once it settled, he was met with a horrific sight. Tenshi’s wings were completely scorched, and she had burns littering her fragile body. All he could do was stand there. For once, the intelligent Lord of Hatred was dumbfounded.

The young beauty’s eyes were open, and she was giving short, shallow, huffs of breath. Memories were flashing in front of her eyes, memories of her and the Hateful One. All she could do was watch them, and cry.

She walked into the Church of the Triune, excited to see where her new home would be. No-one knew who she was, and she wanted it to be that way until she was ready. She was brought from her thoughts when the Priest showed her to a kindly-looking male standing near the altar. “Tenshi, this is Mefis, the Spirit of Love. I’ll leave you two alone, so you may get acquainted.” Tenshi’s eyes hardened a little when she heard this. This was impossible, she was the Spirit of Love! This could mean one thing, and one thing only. “Mephisto. What are you doing here, impersonating me like a coward?” The male was taken aback. This young, small, female was the true Spirit of Love? How could she be? Her dark brown hair, and ragtag clothing style, didn’t match the Spirit’s description at all. “How did you know?” Was all he could answer. This made Tenshi giggle a bit, and she was rewarded with a pointed glare. She just somehow knew that this was going to be a rather interesting relationship with the Demon. Now, to chase him out of her Church.

Months had gone by since their first encounter, and they had been meeting up at least once a day. This particular day, they were meeting in a forest so that Tenshi could meet Diablo and Baal. It was a late fall evening, and the brunette female was shivering in her light robes. The two were quiet, save for Mephisto smoking a cigarette. His all-black eyes shifted over to the tiny female, and he slipped his heavy coat off his human form, and wrapped it around her shoulders. Still, there were no words exchanged between Hatred and Love. After a few moments longer, the Lovely One rested her head on the Hateful One’s shoulder, expressing her thanks to him. He only snorted.

Mephisto escorted Tenshi inside his home in Sanctuary, feeling everything but comfortable. He was having Tenshi over for dinner, and to possibly take refuge in his home. There was a violent storm outside, and it was scaring this Lovely Spirit. He only wished he knew why he cared. He sighed out, and slipped the coat off her shoulders and hung it up. “Sit down and try to relax, I am going to see what Baal and Diablo are up to. And possibly see the status on Azmodan. There are candles if the lights go out.” He said as he ventured upstairs, calling out his siblings’ names. Tenshi sat down and looked around the dark-looking room. She could see pictures of Mephisto and his brothers throughout the room, and it made her smile a little. Especially the one where he was smiling. She thought he looked nice like that. All relaxed and happy. She slowly got up and looked closer at the picture, and silently wondered why he didn’t smile more. A song came to her mind, one that the humans called ‘Just Be Friends’. It was about a male wishing to end the relationship he was in with a female. She had been singing it a lot lately, especially when she thought about Mephisto. She knew nothing between the two would ever happen. All he could feel was hate, and mock emotions. Fake emotions. The only real one was hatred. When she turned around, she was silenced by surprise and embarrassment. The three brothers had heard her singing.

Mephisto could tell her life was flashing in front of her eyes, or something of the like. The Hateful One snarled and looked up as Azmodan chuckled in his chest, as if this was funny to Sin. Hate stood up, and his eyes flashed white, and Azmodan was incinerated in an almost blinding ball of light. Mephisto fell to his knees, panting as he pulled the dieing female into his lap. He shushed her, and brushed her hair out of her face. “Tenshi… Thank you… Shh, now… I won’t… Leave… I’m here…” He didn’t know why he was crying… When it came to Tenshi, he found that he was easily stumped. He gave a smile when she did. “Me…phisto… I’m… Sorry…” She said, starting to fade. The Lord of Hatred’s breath hitched and he leaned down, pressing a light kiss to her lips. He didn’t know if he’d ever have the chance again. He growled when Tenshi kissed back, and he let go of a sob when she went limp. He cried out and clutched her to his chest, wondering why he felt such grief. Mephisto felt her pulse in a fit of desperation and arose when he felt one. As if his brothers could feel this desperation, too, they arose with him and ran to the nearest hospital. They had to save her, if not for her sake, then for Mephisto’s own.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It’s been at least a month now, and the Lord of Hatred practically lived in Tenshi’s hospital room. He spent his days talking to her, and holding her hand. Oh, and thinking. There was a lot of thinking. He had come to a conclusion as to why he felt the way he did around the still-small female, and it, yet again, dumbfounded him. He felt like… He loved her. Yeah. The Lord of Hatred, in love. It sounded crazy to him, at first, but that was before he came to terms with it. He ‘loved’ his brothers, didn’t he? He gave a terse sigh, and sat at Love’s beside again, taking her tiny hand into his larger ones. The song that Tenshi was singing about three months ago came to his mind, and it was all he was able to do right now. “… But, all I hear are screams between us, resounding and bouncing the echoes throughout my mind. Nothing is left, nothing is sacred, at the end of the line; at the end of our chain, we’ve both run out of time. The bonds between--” He froze when he heard a weak voice singing with him, and he opened his eyes to find the Lovely Spirit singing with him. Tears welled up in his eyes, and he continued. “The bonds between us are finally broken! There’s too much unspoken, we’ve fallen so far apart. This is our farewell, my darling, sayonara, it’s the end! We can never look back, but you’ll always by my best friend… … … Tenshi…” The female looked up at him, and gave a tired smile. “H-Hey… I… Got a second chance… I’m staying.” That’s all Mephisto needed. He pulled her into his arms again and hugged her close; letting go of a shuddering breath as he felt her arms wrap around him.

They stayed like that for a while before Mephisto spoke that fateful phrase. Sure… It might’ve been hard for him to feel it all the time, but he knew he loved her. They were mirrors of each other, working for, with, and against each other. Love and Hate are two emotions that cannot exist without each other. That’s just how it is, that’s how life works. He leaned in and kissed her lightly, smiling when she kissed back. Neither of them noticed Baal and Diablo standing in the doorway, or the camera flash that captured this moment. Sure, it was a good idea for now, but there would be hell to pay when Mephisto found the picture framed on the mantle over the fire in a few hours… None of that mattered, and it wouldn’t until it happened. However, what mattered was this moment, and the two brothers left so it could go on, uninterrupted.

Mephisto shivered when Tenshi spoke her response against his lips, “I love you, too.”
