Disclaimer: One day I shall publish original works for a living. But that day is not this day! The MassEffect universe is (sadly) not mine at all. This gratis playtime with BioWare/etc.'s world and people. But it's Shakespeare's sonnet, ner.

Author's note: pity me! this is my first fic on here, I'm not friends with the format-thing right now, so I just REALLY want this first chapter up looking sort of how it's supposed to. I'll be sure to fix it up when I find my footing

[Shepard is: Earthborn, Sole Survivor, Vanguard]

Sonnet 20

From Kaidan’s perspective he was looking at a long line of rules that he’d broken. Some of them were unwritten, while others were laid out quite specifically by Alliance brass.

-Maintain professional when addressing your commanding officer.- Well, pretty much the entire squad flouted that one. Shepard wouldn’t hear of standing on ceremony. The Commander had once said: “You either know your team or there is no team.”

-Never look weak in front of your superiors.- An unwritten one, obviously, but widely adhered to by most Alliance Marines.

-Don’t become infatuated with your commander... or get over it quick!- Also referred to as “don’t get ahead of yourself” among peers. A prime example of the trouble it could get you into was that of Jenkins’s crush on his drill sergeant. He’d told Kaidan about it. She had noticed his lingering gaze and proceeded to make his life a living hell for the duration of boot camp.

-Make nice with the higher ranks, don’t make friends.- Another rule that was shot down by Shepard personally, who had told Kaidan: “There’s no rule that says you can’t be friends with your commanding officer.” No official rule, perhaps.

-Stop glancing at the Commander’s ass when we’re going up stairs.- A uniquely personal rule, that Kaidan was sure would get him caught if he kept breaking it.

All of his professional and personal rules were falling apart. It was driving him crazy but he felt powerless to stop it. Normally if something was bothering him, Kaidan could work it out by having a talk... with Shepard. He could hardly do that in this case. His mistakes continued to tumble on through his mind; a trail of dominoes falling one right after the other.

-Be honest with your commander.-

-Keep all relationships professional.-

-Stop thinking so much about Shepard.-

-Distance yourself from Shepard.-

-Don’t become attracted to the Commander.-

-Don’t dream about the Commander.-

-Don’t get turned on when you’re near the Commander.-

-Don’t live for every moment spent near the Commander.-

-Don’t fall in love with the Commander.-

But he had. He had and there was no turning back. He tortured himself with it constantly.
/Could I ever confess?/ /What am I to Shepard, anyway?/ /Could Shepard ever want me?/ /Could he ever want another man?/

Alliance policy was far more enlightened than the early 21st Century U.S. policy of “don’t ask, don’t tell”. Still, subjects such as religion or sexual identity harboured too much potential for inciting bigotry and intolerance. The Alliance states: “You may have friends in the military—but the military is not your friend.”

Any talk of amorous intent was to be done in off hours and soldiers knew not to discuss such interests unless they were strictly among friends. Even so, it was easy to see that Shepard was considered a fine specimen by many who met him.

Possibly a reflex born of jealousy and possessiveness, Kaidan could pick up cues that indicated someone was interested in Shepard. He had seen such cues from Ash, from Liara, from Tali and even from Engineer Adams. Not to mention two thirds of the women he encountered while on a mission. If he ever was looking for a date, Jonh Shepard would be spoiled for choices.

It was four days after the flight to Ilos, the Battle of the Citadel and the destruction of Sovereign. The SSV Normandy had docked on Orion. Orion was one of the “Satellite Cities” orbiting Earth. Some of the crew had booked passage to their native colony, while some had grabbed a shuttle for Earth.

Shepard, Kaidan and the remaining portion of the crew had opted to stay at the Alliance bunker in the city. For those without family to visit, it was as good a place as any to rest after spending their free time in the civilian city. In fact, it was a preferred place, given the free beds and cheap food.

Kaidan popped a couple of painkillers as he made his way to the mess hall. He hoped he wouldn’t become sensitive to light this time... it usually meant a whole series of migraines was headed his way. As he passed through the doors he was relieved to find that brighter lights in the mess gave him no trouble. Dread of a different kind flooded Kaidan’s mind when he saw Commander Shepard was there, at the center of a lively conversation. /It’s too soon./ Kaidan thought, having woken from a rather vivid dream only a few hours earlier. He walked the perimeter of the hall to reach the cafeteria, though going by Shepard’s table would have been a more direct route.

“Really? The Elias Kitt?” said Navigator Audra Reese. Kaidan heard the Commander laugh gently at Reese’s enthusiasm. The Lt. wanted to take a seat at the other end of the mess from Shepard... but he knew he’d only attract attention by doing so. Steeling himself, he walked over to sit at Shepard’s table as if nothing was wrong.

“Sure. I suppose he wanted to meet The Commander Shepard. You know, welcome me to the “The” club.” John Shepard paused, turning to acknowledge Kaidan’s arrival with a smile and a brief nod. “I told him what I thought about his production of Hamlet—that his expectations of his human audience were better suited to a study than a stage.”

“I never knew you were so cultured, Commander.” Dr. Chakwas remarked teasingly. Shepard grinned.

“I’ll have you know I’m extremely cultured, Doctor. I’m practically yogurt.” his expression grew thoughtful, “But I don’t know... there’s just such a variety to Shakespeare’s work; everyone can find a part they relate to.”

“What do you relate to, Commander?” Kaidan surprised himself by asking the question aloud.

“Probably the fools. Any of the fools... all the fools.” Those nearby laughed, but Kaidan had a feeling it wasn’t actually a joke.

/“Kaidan.” Almond-shaped brown eyes captured him with their fire. Kaidan stood immobilised by Shepard’s gaze. The Commander’s Asian features were off-set by his naturally ash-blond hair. A few centuries ago it might have been rare, but having parents from two different megatropoli often produced such extremes./

/“Commander?” His was the only seat occupied in the semi-circle of chairs in the comm. room. Shepard had dismissed the rest of the crew at the end of the de-briefing. Shepard stood over him, not giving him enough room to stand./

/“You really shouldn’t let yourself get so... tense.” His gaze flicked from Kaidan’s eyes to his lap and back. Kaidan looked down. He was getting an erection, and it was clearly visible through the clinging material of his uniform. Was it possible to die of shame? It might be preferable to facing his Commander again./

/“I-- I— what are... Commander!” Shepard had knelt down, his hands going for Kaidan’s fly. The next thing the Lieutenant knew Shepard had wrapped his hand around Kaidan’s dick, easing it out of his pants and gently stroking up and down./

/“That’s better, isn’t it?” said Shepard. He smiled devilishly up at Kaidan, whom he’d rendered speechless. His expression of shock had changed to one of pleasure. He tried to say something, anything to let Shepard know how he felt... /

/“I’ve been wanting to—oh! oooooooooooooooooh, oooooh yesss!” His confession was drowned in moans as Shepard took his cock in his mouth, sucking and rubbing him with his tongue. He let his teeth drag gently against Kaidan’s flesh drew his way up until the head was still encased in wet warmth. Kaidan felt like he might burst when Shepard began tonguing the tip of his dick... but somehow the Commander kept him in ecstasy without pushing him over the edge./

/Shepard’s head bobbed in Kaidan’s lap as he worked the other’s cock in and out of his mouth. Kaidan watched through half-lidded eyes as his commander sucked in earnest. It was easily the hottest thing he had ever seen. He licked his lips, feeling the inside of his mouth growing dry from all his panting and moaning. Shepard’s ministrations drove the sounds from Kaidan unbidden, which in turn seemed to spur the man on. The pleasure began to coil tightly inside him. It was that devilish plateau before climax that had the power to drive him crazy with need./

/“Oh, please... ooooooh! Please make me come, John, please make me come—oh god, John...”
As Kaidan felt himself go, Shepard swallowed him to the hilt. He groaned deep and primal as he felt Shepard gag against his cock. The Commander swallowed hard and took the discomfort, letting Kaidan’s load spill down his throat... /

Kaidan woke, his heart clenching the way it did when he realised he’d been dreaming. It wasn’t just about the sex... (though the dream had contained only that) it was the fact that he didn’t have to hide anything from the Commander anymore. It was always painful to feel the burden return when he had escaped into fantasy. At least it had happened in private... in gravity. Having a wet dream in zero-gees was problematic, not to mention the trouble of cleaning your pod before the next shift goes to sleep.

Kaidan made a quick trip to the showers and was back in his room getting dressed when he noticed the light flashing on his console. There was a message from late last night, when he’d already fallen asleep. It was from Shepard.

Kaidan,

This morning in the mess you asked what I related to from Shakespeare’s work. Well, what I said was true and it wasn’t. I didn’t say what first came to my mind. I hid it. I’m supposed to be your commander... to set standards, to be strong. But I was—I was scared that if I’d said “Sonnet XX” it would leave me vulnerable to the crew in a way that I couldn’t stand. If it had been us... just us... one of our man-to-man heart-to-hearts? I would have been honest. I know that I can be vulnerable before my friends without any worry. You’re not really too familiar with the Bard, are you? This whole thing must seem a bit strange to you... or a lot. Don’t worry about it. I needed to get this off my chest. I’m glad I did. Yeah. Sonnet 20.

--John

It was a show of trust and friendship. Kaiden knew that he ought to be touched and pleased by this note. But he couldn’t help feeling a touch of bitterness. Reading the word “us” had sparked his hopes, only to be jolted by the terribly platonic implications of the term “man-to-man”. It was true enough that Kaidan had little knowledge of classical literature. Ash had been the one who could recite verse from memory. Curious, Kaidan accessed the extranet, easily finding a “Complete Works” database. He went to “Shakespeare” then “Sonnets”... scrolling until he reached the 20th of the 154 sonnets:

A woman’s face, with nature’s own hand painted,
Hast thou, the master-mistress of my passion;
A woman’s gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting change, as is false woman’s fashion;
An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gliding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue, all hues in his controlling,
Which steals men’s eyes, and women’s souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created;
Till Nature, as she wrought thee, fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated,
By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
But since she prick’d thee out for women’s pleasure,
Mine be thy love, and thy love’s use their treasure.
