Hunter

This is a world made for hunters, Morinth thought, watching the masses of Omega. One could kill every night here and still fear no retribution. A demon could walk openly here and be not just tolerated but welcomed. There were thousands here who would embrace her even knowing the cost – death here was a constant companion, pleasure a rare gift.

She could rule here as a queen, like the Ardat-Yakshi of legend. But she loved the hunt too much for that.

A human caught her eye. Young, attractive, female. Morinth watched as the woman found a seat overlooking the dirty vista of Omega’s steel canyons and began to sketch them. An artist, Morinth thought. A rare sight on Omega. She would have to keep an eye out for this one.

Morinth abandoned the Turian she had come in with as soon as she saw the human female enter Afterlife. He had been interesting enough, but there was no subtlety to him, no refinement. Once, she would have settled for completing that hunt. Here, on Omega, she felt she could afford to pursue only the finest prey.

The woman was nervous, out of place here in the pounding heart of Omega. Her friends had run to the dance floor, but she held back, unsure what to do.

“Your first time here?” Morinth whispered in her ear. The woman nodded. “Come, let’s dance together.”

Morinth reached out for her hand, and the human followed her, entranced already.

“I know they’re not much, but I like making them.” The human said shyly.

“These are beautiful.” Morinth said, turning the small sculpture over in her hands. “You sell yourself too short.”

It was not a false compliment. Morinth was genuinely impressed by the woman’s creations. A sense of guilt briefly passed over her as she wondered what treasures the artist would create if given a few more years to refine her work. The feeling passed – if she remained here in Omega, chances were she’d probably be dead in a few months anyway.

“Do you prefer painting or sculpture?” Morinth asked.

“I used to paint a lot more. Now I mainly sculpt.” The human said. “I like making something you can reach out and touch. It’s more-“

“Physical?” Morinth nodded. She had tried her hand at art a few centuries back. She’d never been very good, but she remembered the satisfaction she’d always gotten from carving an object into the shape she desired.

“I’ve always liked Elcor sculpture.” She said. “I have a few pieces – you should come by my apartment some time and look at them.”

“I- oh.” The human woman said. “I don’t know-“

“Or I could drop one off at your place.” Morinth said casually. Privately, she marvelled at how hesitant the humans still was. She had not expected the human to hold out for more than a day after their dance at Afterlife. The human was clearly much more strong-willed than she’d given her credit for. Morinth was beginning to understand why had found herself attracted to this shy young artist, so different from her usual tastes.

She smiled. The hunt was always so much more exciting when there was a chance the prey could escape.

“I’m sorry I was late.” The human whispered. “My mother… I don’t think she approves of me seeing you. I had to sneak out.”

Morinth laughed at that. She’d been spending more and more time with the human, and it was only natural the woman’s other relationships would begin to suffer. That she was driving a wedge between mother and daughter only heightened her excitement as the relationship moved towards its conclusion.

“I think you’ll like this film, Nef.” She said. “It’s a real classic.”

Apart from them, the cinema was deserted; Morinth had made sure of that. The owner had quickly agreed to let her arrange a private screening when she’d confronted him. She’d barely had to threaten him at all.

“Vaenia.” The human read the title credit. “I’ve never heard of it.”

“It’s a little obscure.” Morinth explained. “Banned on a few worlds, actually – there was a lot of controversy when it was made over its portrayal of a pureblood relationship. It’s a little explicit at times – I’m sorry, does that bother you?”

“No, I’m interested.” The human said, entranced by the three dimensional images flickering across the screen. “Is that Thessia? It’s such a beautiful world.”

Morinth nodded, surprised at how moved she was herself to see the landscape of the planet she’d so long been exiled from.

“I’ll take you there someday.” She whispered to the human, enjoying the sight of her eyes lighting up. She passed the human a dose of Hallex; the artist had been initially hesitant to try the drugs Morinth offered her, but now she unquestioningly took whatever Morinth gave her.

“You’re so good to me, Morinth.” The human woman whispered. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”

She leaned over, and the two kissed, the film forgotten.

The human groaned beneath her as she slid her tongue inside her, enjoying the taste of the human’s arousal. She felt the human’s hands reach down and fingers ran across the sensitive skin between the fronds of her head, and Morinth regretted that this would end so quickly. She lifted her head from between the human’s thighs and looked across the human’s naked body still quivering with pleasure.

“Please don’t stop.” The human whispered, breathing heavily. “I don’t want this night to ever end.”

“It won’t.” Morinth said, running her hands gently up the woman’s body. “Do you trust me?”

“Of course.”

“Embrace eternity.” Morinth said, raising her hands to the human’s head, finally letting loose the desire she’d been restraining.

In an instant, the human screamed as the waves of energy Morinth unleashed overwhelmed her neural system. For a brief moment, their minds and bodies were linked. Morinth could feel the echo of the pleasure burning through the human’s body, ecstasy in itself but a mere shadow of what she knew the human was experiencing. If she could just hold on a moment longer, she knew she’d be able to feel it herself-

And then it was gone, and all she felt was a hollow emptiness.

She looked down at the body beneath her, the artist’s face forever locked in an expression of ecstasy that Morinth knew she could would never feel herself.
