Strangers In a Strange World
Chapter One: Life’s Wants and Needs.
Wes walked down the street he had walked for most of his life, seeing all the same things he had seen every day for nearly 10 years. A couple stood in the archway of the flats that guarded the entrance to the road, kissing relentlessly, oblivious to all around them. He had never had a girlfriend, and he was nearly 19; an age that, he was told by his family, was fine to reach with no experience in love. All his friends however, had been in long relationships for what felt like forever.
He reached his door and fumbled in his school blazer for his key. His questing hands found what they were searching for and pulled the key, its ring weighed down with a few other keys and a small memento from a trip to Germany, from his inside pocket. He put the key in the lock and turned it. The key wouldn’t move. He turned it again and the key snapped in the lock. Wes turned and check behind him, his parent’s cars weren’t in the drive. His day was away of business, and his mother was out shopping, she would still be hours yet.
Wes dropped his backpack against the wall and sat on it, his shoulders slumped and his head fell to his hands. Almost as soon as Wes’ backside hit his bag, the heavens opened up, and rain hammered down. It took less than a moment for Wes to get soaked through, and about as much time for him to start shivering.
He sat there, soaking and cold for what felt like hours, until he heard a sound, a soft voice from nearby. Wes looked up, into the eyes of Lauren, a girl that lived across the street from him. Her eyes were intoxicating, a brilliant sapphire blue, and they seemed to pierce deep into Wes’s own dull green eyes. Wes knew he would happily lose himself in those eyes, given the chance. He also didn’t mind the fact that the rest of her body was as stunning as her eyes; her lips were full, her waist thin with hips that any girl would be jealous of. His eyes wandered up and found her chest; her white school shirt was soaked. Through the thin fabric, he could see her…
“You can stop staring now.” Lauren said, with the hint of a smile curving her lips. The sound of her voice snapped Wes out of his stupor. He felt his cheeks redden and he averted his eyes to the floor. The next thing to happen surprised him to no end. He felt a soft hand touch his chin, and in shock allowed his head to be lifted.
Lauren smiled at him and blushed herself. “You looked cold out here, and the rain isn’t helping much.” She said, he eyes darting away and her blush intensifying. Wes’ look of surprise pulled a giggle from her mouth as she offered her hand, he took it and she pulled him up.
A strand of wet hair fell across her eyes and without thinking, Wes reached forward and brushed it away. Instantly, both of their faces turned a deep shade of red, and both looked away as fast as they could. “Well…. Come on.” Lauren said quietly, and led Wes to her front door. Neither of them noticed that they had been holding hands the whole time.
Lauren opened the door and took Wes inside. “Wait here, I gotta go change.” Lauren said as she walked up the stairs to her room. Wes couldn’t help himself and began wandering around the bottom floor. He guessed the house was empty apart from them as the only sounds he could hear were coming from upstairs. He walked into the front room and found a sofa, a TV. A small table sat in front of the sofa, and on it was a laptop. Wes sat on the sofa and glanced at the Laptop screen.
What he saw shocked him almost as much as Lauren holding his hand. On the screen was the login page for World of Warcraft. “Hey! Lauren! I didn’t know you played WoW!” he called up to her.
“I don’t.” came the reply “that’s my bothers dumb game!” Wes’ heart sank slightly, he didn’t really know why. Oh he thought to himself. “So…” came Laurens voice from the door “how do I look?” she inquired. Wes looked up and saw her, his chin hit the floor. Lauren was stood in the door wearing, well, very little at all. She was in an overly large shirt and cotton hotpants.
She sat next to Wes and gently pushed his chin back into its place. “So, you gonna show me how to play?” she asked, in what she hoped was a flirty voice. “Erm… ok.” Wes leaned forward and began typing on the laptop. He finished what he typing and pressed return. “What are you doing?” Lauren said with a hint of confusion on her voice.
Wes didn’t hear her however. He had logged into his own WoW account, but something was wrong, the screen that normally came up when loading the game wasn’t there. Instead, Wes could see rolling fields, lakes and mountains passing by, as if they were real. Wes’ hand began to rise on its own accord, the other reaching behind him and gently taking Laurens in its grip. His hand continued to rise, and edged towards the screen. The tips of Wes’ fingers touched the screen and the whole world seemed to explode; colours flashed past Wes’ vision that he had never seen before. He turned his head, an act that took more effort the Wes thought possible, Lauren was still there, holding
Wes’ hand and being pulled along behind him.
Lauren didn’t know what was happening, she had invited this guy into her house, made a couple passes and he seemed more interested in a game. Then, she finds herself being transported somewhere, with him. Suddenly, she felt something was wrong; she looked up, and to her horror, realised that her hand was slipping. “WES!” His head turned, and he too noticed that they were slipping apart.
Their hands parted and in an instant they were separated. Lauren seemed to be flung away, whilst Wes continued on the path they had been travelling. His vision blurred and there was a flash of white.
