Old Town
Bowerstone Old Town. It was the part of town that stood on the line between a well-developed sector and a hangout for thugs. It was also where the less fortunate members of society winded up.
That’s what I am. Well, me and my annoying sister, Rose. That’s what we were- unfortunate members of society without even a gold piece to our names. We lived in a small wooden hut in one of the back alleys of Old Town. The hut was barely enough to keep us warm on most nights. It was winter now, though, and snow was falling.
God. It’s going to be freezing tonight. Hold on. Why the hell is my sister smiling?
“Look, little Sparrow,” said Rose, “Castle Fairfax looks so beautiful in the snow.”
Of course. That again. She was always dreaming about getting inside that castle. It was stupid. I wish she would get it through her thick skull that we’re not getting into that castle by daydreaming. I was about to speak my mind when we heard a commotion from the center of Old Town. Rose was all curious about it and pulled me along. That’s when we ran into Arthur.
Arthur was an ugly man. He was always slouching and he had a really bad taste in clothing. The hat, for one, looked horrible. Still, I liked Arthur. For one thing, my sister hated him. The enemy of my enemy is my friend, no? However, what I liked about Arthur was that he was willing to take us off the streets if my sister agreed to fuck him. Of course, she would never do that. She’s just stuck-up like that.
“Hello, young Rose,” said Arthur,” Have you reconsidered my offer?”
She’d refused again, of course. My sister was so dumb sometimes. Arthur was willing to settle for oral. He’d mentioned it to us once, but she was apparently disgusted by the thought and ran off, pulling me with her. Rose was such an idiot sometimes. I would’ve done it, but Arthur’s not interested in me. I’m a six year-old girl, after all.
We left in a hurry and reached what seemed to be a merchant. He was selling magical trinkets and oddities. They were obviously rubbish. My sister agreed with me. Perhaps she wasn’t that stupid.
“You think it could really be magic?” was all I heard my sister say.
I was lost in thought, but from what I could gather, she was talking to an old woman who convinced her that the music box the merchant was showing off was real. Unbelievable.
She’d agreed with the old woman, eventually. That’s when she turned to me. She actually expected me to help her gather five gold coins so we could purchase that trinket. Swell. I decided to go along with it, though. Five gold coins were five gold coins. I’d just steal them from her later and then run off on my own. I’ve had enough of her pulling me down.
So we went ahead and did a few meaningless chores. Some fool wanted us to strike a pose for a magical box. I went ahead and introduced his magic box to my middle finger right before the light flashed. I’m sure that would make for a good... what did he call it? Fotogrip? Whatever. We had one gold coin down.
We walked on. I saw a boy bullying a dog. It made me giggle, actually, but then Rose had to be all heroic.
“Leave him alone!” said Rose.
The guy was a lunatic. I liked him. He groped Rose’s chest and then socked her in the head. The kids were saying he’d hit a girl. That made the guy mad. He started whacking the little boys with his wooden sword. It made me roll on the ground in laughter. Before he left, the funny guy flipped Rose over, so her face was against the ground, and then he stood behind her and ground his crotch into her ass for about a minute. It made me wonder why everyone was so into this sex thing.
I flashed the guy a smile as he walked past. He grinned back. It was kind of creepy, really. He was butt-ugly. It took a while, but Rose eventually came to. We moved on. We still had four pieces to go.
