Interlude: Tauren Babies
She rolled over in bed, the cries had woken them again. Twins they where, and her mother, a grandmother now, had told them that soon they would sleep throughout the night, and not disturb her at all. She didn't believe her though, it felt as if she would never get a good nights sleep again, forever disturbed by the cries of newborns.
``Are you asleep?" the heavy breathing next to her told her the definite answer, so she nudged her husband, sharply in the ribs just hard enough to wake him up, not hard enough for him to notice.
``Are you asleep?" again that is the dreaded thing all men fear at night.
``Not any more dear" - its the only response they want to hear. He heard the gentle crying, and got up and plodded over to the crib. ``There there" he said as he reached in, and pulled out the two tightly wrapped bundles. He checked them quickly - they didn't need changing yet, which was relief for him. Back in bed his wife rolled over again, and was already beginning to drift off.
He carried the two pains into the next room, and sat down on an old chair.
``Lets go in here so we don't disturb her." He balanced the babies in his arms and then thought for a bit. ``Would you two like a story?" They looked up at him, those big beautiful eyes. ``Ok then, heres one...
A long time ago, in a valley a long way from here, a Tauren gentleman was walking down a country lane, when all of a sudden, he heard a shrill cry from a damsel in distress. He looked over and for a moment, he was stunned by her beauty - she had fur as silky as satin, she was tall and slender, and she had a sparkle in her eye which looked like a jewel set in a dark coal. For a second or two, he didn't notice the three Dwarven raiders that had come and had captured this beautiful taurine lady, and put her in a cage, intending to sell her as a slave. Well, he couldn't have that, so he leapt straight into action.
Brandishing his cane (he was a gentleman after all), he charged into combat, he smacked the first dwarf so hard with his cane that it broke over the dwarves head. Not to be disturbed, he dropped it, and resorted to using his hoofs - he punched the second dwarf so hard, the dwarf rose and flew across the air, smashing into the cage and throwing it open.
Finally, turned and roared at the third with such vigor that the dwarf just fainted in front of him. He turned and held out his hand for what he presumed must be a princess to descend from the cage and as she looked into his eyes she realized that she had met the tauren of her dreams and they could live happily ever after.
He looked down at the two calves sleeping peacefully in his arms he carried the two bundles of fur back to the crib and placed them back inside gently, pulling the sheet up over and tucking them in.
``And thats how I met your mother". He whispered that last line of the story, and then returned to the bed, safe in the knowledge that another heroic deed had been done.
His wife stirred beside him.
``Are they ok?" she murmured, half asleep still.
``Yes, I told them a story about how we met."
``The one where I found some dwarfs kicking your ass and I had to save you?" she murmured again.
``Yes dear."
