Hearts and Spades
Constructive criticism welcome.
It is said that if you share a papoa fruit with someone, both your destinies will be bound forever. You should try that!
Sora looked at the fruit that Riku just gave him. Did he get a bite of it? His blue eyes fell upon his friend and he felt his gaze upon him. Sora was feeling confused. thoughts started running through his mind. Does Riku want us to be together forever? Could that really be? He remembered the dream. Riku was standing in the water, and holding his arms open, as if he was waiting for Sora to hug him. The spiky haired boy started running towards him, and never reached him. The he got the feeling he was falling only to wake up later with the feeling that something was missing.
But he knew Riku too well. They had spent years together, and although the white haired boy had matured a lot since Kairi's arrival on the island, he knew him well enough to know that he was teasing.
Thinking Riku was trying to fool him again, he frowned, and threw the fruit away. Those are just stories for romantic little girls. Since when could a fruit ensure that people stay together.
The sun was going under and painted the sky in warm colors. Orange and red clouds decorated the purple sky, and some stars started to be visible.
The three friends were sitting on the beach, talking about their coming departure.
Riku seemed very confident as always, which was not the case for Sora. Even though he really wanted to visit the world, he did not give it so much thought, and rather had decided spontaneously that he would leave with his friends. He wondered if Riku realised that he would follow him to the end of the world, if he should go there.
Kairi stood up from the warm sand, and said she would go to sleep. Riku looked at Sora, and helped him stand up, after they too decided to go to bed. They went to the hut. When they entered it, it had gotten dark, and Sora turned on a candle to light the building up a little. The two boys stared at the dancing flame for a while, in silence. Riku looked absent minded or rather, thoughtful, as usually. He probably was concerned about the trip and when Sora asked, he replied that he was thinking of what they would need for the journey. It would probably be a long way to the next world, so they better take enough food with them.
Sora mumbled : you mean, take papoa fruits with us so we don't lose each other on the boat?
Hearing this, Riku's face became serious. More serious than it already was. Sora wondered if he said something wrong.
R Riku?
It's nothing, he said.
Sora gave it a thought, he remembered when Riku gave him the fruit, and wondered once more what he ad in mind doing that. Sora was starting to regret throwing it away. He would look for it tomorrow. So long, he thought he should apologise.
Listen, Riku, i... is it bothering you that i threw away that fruit?
No, he said. But his face looked too neutral to be really calm. He had the same cool gaze as always, yet for knowing him so long, Sora knew that something was bothering him, even if he didn't admit it.
Did you want to ... Who did you want me to share it with anyway? Said Sora, embarrassed. Riku seemed touched. He looked up, and when he noticed Sora's blushing cheek, he smiled, and stood up. The boy with silver hair walked over to his younger friend, and started hugging him. Sora was utterly confused, not believing what was happening, when he felt Riku's knuckles rubbing his head, hurting, and messing up his hair.
Riku laughed : I was just joking! Did i upset you? And he winked at his best friend.
Sora was relieved. he had thought for a while that Riku could have been mad at him for dumping his "present". He should have known that his friend wasn't the type to give items a secondary meaning. Riku held Sora another minute after he stopped bugging him. He looked at his messy hair, and satisfied, smiled and wished him a good night.
Riku left the room, and Sora was now alone. He pulled the covers over himself, and dozed in, remembering the soft feeling of Riku's cheek against his. For a second, he had been gentle and seemed to have put down his defensive face. But Sora soon imagined that he must have been wrong. The hug was nothing more but a trick to lower his defenses, and catch him by surprise for some more teasing.
Yet, Sora felt a warm feeling, and that night, the weird dreams gave a break for him, to dream about a tender night with his friend. Before he became too tired and fell completely asleep, Sora's last thought was : i have to reach a papoa fruit from the tree, and ask Riku to share it with me.
