Kiss By A Rose

Kiss From a Rose

By Kerianya

This is a gift fic for dearest darling Vchan! She got me into this pairing so this is my songfic to say thank you! ^_^

The pairing is Xiahou Dun and Zhang He. It's a PG-13 so everyone can enjoy it, but it's obviously boy on boy sooo…there's your warning!

The song is "Kiss From A Rose" by Seal. The lyrics belong to him and he is a very talented man. Xiahou Dun, Zhang He and any other characters that might get mentioned belong to themselves or to Koei, sometimes both. Only the story is mine.

This is viewed in both characters P.O.V. and in 3rd person, because I say so!

*There used to be a greying tower alone on the sea
You became the light on the dark side of me
Love remains, a drug that's the high and not the pill*

It was the same every morning. At the crack of dawn you get up, dressed and down to the cliffs by the sea to dance, and every day I get up and follow so I can watch you. Your favorite dancing ground is surrounded by the ruins of the old watchtower, so I can always find somewhere to watch unseen.

You're captivating! You, Zhang He, Wei's most graceful, no, China's most graceful general, are the most breathtaking vision I ever saw, even with both eyes. When you dance, the whole world just seems to stand still and silence, as if it wants to watch you dance to that tune only you can hear. Your face looks so relaxed and happy when you dance here, when you think nobody can see you.

I like seeing you like that! I like seeing you not being stressed or exaggerating everything to the extremes like some kind of performer. Someone so beautiful doesn't need to seek attention like that. I know you hate being alone, He. That's why you've thrown yourself into the arms of Cao Pi, and before him Cao Cao. You knew that they would hurt you and toss you aside when they had finished, and yet when they offered you those titbits of affection you took them. You even said that you knew your feelings for Cao Pi were pointless, as he only really had eyes for that holier-than-thou general of Shu. What was his name again?

You need somebody who actually wants you for keeps, not just for when it's convenient. I could be that someone for you, if only I could open my mouth to tell you.

I've always liked you, since the day you first came to us. You were stunning even then, before you'd had a chance to perfect your beauty properly. You were brought under my wing at first, and I was shown that vulnerable, slightly lonely side of you that nobody has seen since.

Today it is snowing and I'm shivering like a leaf in the wind, yet you are dancing in little more than your silk tunic and pants. Though I am freezing, you do not even seem cold as you glide effortlessly through the air. Around you the snow falling seems to give you an aura, and you seem to be wreathed in light.

Yes, He. You truly are breathtaking…

*But did you know
that when it snows
My eyes become large
And the light that you shine can't be seen?*

I sigh, like I do at least once every morning when I see you dance. Ever since I found out that you liked to do this I have not missed a single daybreak. As soon as the sun sets I ache for the new day. I even got into the unusual habit of going to bed early. My brother often jests that I am getting old. Ironically I can't remember when I last felt so young-all because of you.

All the same, sitting in this snow shivering whilst watching you dance can't be doing me any sort of good. I think I'm getting a cold after all these winter mornings here but oh! How you are worth every part of it, every sniffle and fever that fate throw at me I'll gladly endure to watch you some more…

Suddenly something near me catches your eye and you stop your dance, curious amusement clear on your pretty face. I try to make myself as rock-like as possible when you walk towards me, your hips swaying in that way that drives Zhen Ji insane with envy whenever she sees it.

You kneel down in the snow, and laugh out loud with amazement. When you reach down and pick a fully bloomed rose, I share your amazement. How could a beautiful red rose have survived the ravages of snow, and in the middle of winter?

It's still not as transfixing as you are though. I watch as you run the rose across your smiling lips and inhale its scent with your eyes fluttering closed. I could laugh at myself, because I was momentarily consumed with jealousy by a flower!

*Baby, I compare you to a kiss from a rose on the grey
Ooh, the more I get of you, the stranger it feels yeah
Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom on the grey*

I am overcome with horror as I feel the beginnings of a sneeze blossoming within my nose. I try to suppress its arrival until you return to your dancing, but you're entranced by this impossible rose. You won't stop staring at and touching the ruby petals unless you're inhaling its perfume. You won't go away and I'm going to…

"AaaCHOOO!"

I'm such a loud sneezer, always have been. You'd have most probably heard me if you were dancing…

"D-Dun…?"

I raise my head and find myself staring into your dusky lilac eyes.

*There is so much a man can tell you
So much he can say
You remain my power, my pleasure, my pain
Baby,*

I dance every morning at the ruins by the cliff. I like dancing here, especially at this time. It gives me time to think…about my past…about my future…about my place and purpose in this age. But these days I mostly think about him…

Xiahou Dun, the one-eyed general, and the object of my feelings since…since…since I joined the armies of Wei all that time ago. When I dance I fantasize that he is my spectator, admiring my every move with the passion I hold for him. For a while now I've almost fancied that I can feel eyes on me every morning. Probably a bird or something that nests here, but as my mother says, it helps if you dream…

My pretty face has attracted many an admirer, and the occasional lover, all of whom have used me for their own desires and cast me aside. But he will be different, I know it. Dun is different to the Cao family that share his blood, equally different to Yuan, his own brother. I know that he would love me like I love him, if only he could see that I could be so much more than just a friend and comrade-in-arms…

A flash of color against the stark whiteness of the snow stops my routine and curiosity pushes thoughts of Dun from my mind momentarily. Curiously, I walk up to the flash of color, red that is as rich as blood.

I laugh with surprise at what I find. Why, it's a rose! A fully bloomed red rose. But how did a rose grow in this barren place? In the middle of winter, no less? It's the most beautiful, unblemished rose I have ever seen. I have to protect such fragile beauty from the ravages of the cold, so I pluck it from its insubstantial place of birth.

It truly is the most perfect rose I have ever seen…

*To me, you're like a growing
Addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me, is that healthy, baby?*

I run the silky petals across my lips thoughtfully before caressing them with my fingers, savoring the soft, velvety texture. I inhale its perfume, which is as perfect at its every other feature.

As I savor the rose, I dream again. I dream that it's Dun who has given me this rose, that it's his callused hand running the petals across my lips, watching as I smell the perfume. The fantasy is entrancing…

"AaaCHOO!"

I drop the rose in surprise as the sneeze cuts through my thoughts. Some assassin or spy perhaps? I'm always armed with my claws, so I begin to raise them should I need to protect myself. But I need not use them as I recognize the shape of…him!

"D-Dun?" I whisper, blushing as he stares up at me, embarrassment clear on his handsome face.

*But did you know that when it snows
My eyes become large
And the light that you shine can't be seen?*

Dun rose nervously from his hiding place, trying to stop his body from trembling. Instinctively, He backed away as he did.

"Wh-what are you doing here?" The dancer squeaked, feeling scared of the one he admired so much. To his surprise Dun blushed, though he tried hard to hide it by dusting the melting snow from his knees. "Dun?"

Dun sighed. This may well be the chance he needed to tell his beloved how he felt.

"I…I was…watching you dance. I've been doing it for a while…"

Zhang He blushed in response.

"You have been watching me dance?" He marveled at the one-eyed general's stealth.

"Yes."

"But…why?"

Dun hesitated. Surely it was now or never to make his move. He cupped the surprised He's chin in a callused hand.

"Because…" how was he supposed to say this? He's purple eyes were wide and glittering with what he could only pray was hope. "Because I…love you, He."

He blinked twice as he absorbed this revelation.

"Am I going to wake up and find that this is just another dream?" He whispered.

Dun took the rose from He's hand and slid it into the golden hairband, allowing his hand to trace the smooth jawline as it fell.

"I hope not." He replied, his voice also dropping to a whisper.

He licked his full, rosy lips as he took Dun's falling hand.

"In that case, I think you should know…"

Dun's eye widened as He leant forward and kissed him hotly on the lips, his free hand resting on Dun's broad shoulder. Despite his surprise he quickly responded, slipping his own brawny arms around He's slim form as his tongue gently slid into that sweet mouth.

Their first passionate but innocent kiss seemed to last for less than a second, and yet at the same time for an eternity before they broke apart, breathless but happy.

"I love you too Dun." He finished, nuzzling his new lover happily as the winter sun broke through the thick layer of cloud.

*I've been kissed by a rose on the grey
I've been kissed by a rose on the grey
And if I should fall, will it all go away?
I've been kissed by a rose on the grey.*

That day, nobody saw Xiahou Dun or Zhang He apart from briefly at the evening meal. As soon as they had finished the food on their plates they disappeared again. This did not go unnoticed by the Cao family, and by nightfall the news that the two were an item was known throughout the forces of Wei.

The following morning, the snow fell unbroken and unspoilt around the ruins of the old watchtower. But in the warm security of a bedroom, Zhang He continued to dance, smiling as he caught the eye of his observer and love, and on the dresser lay the miracle rose, the bloom that had brought them together.

*Now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom…

On the…

Grey*

That concludes my first gift fic. Hope you liked it Vchan ^_^
