Broken Wishes
Lyon knocked on the door.
“Prince? Your Highness, may I come in?”
She waited hopefully for permission, her ear pressed against the door. She held her breath, until finally an answer came…
“No.”
The same answer she’d heard for weeks now. Almost a month. The Prince locked himself away more often in his room, and Lyon would not see him until mealtime. No one would see him. The Prince rarely allowed anyone in his room anymore.
Lyon sighed. “Very well, Prince…I’ll return later, then.”
“Thank you, Lyon.”
Lyon turned to leave, distressed. She wondered what had happened to make the Prince act this way towards her.
Then she heard something else.
“Now where were we…?”
The Prince was talking to someone. Lyon quietly leaned against the door again, waiting to hear more. It was wrong to snoop like this, but…she was just so worried.
A second voice muttered something. She couldn’t pick up the words. She couldn’t place the voice, either.
“Don’t be like that,” came the Prince’s voice. “You were the one who came to me first, after all.”
“It wasn’t for…!” For a split second, the other voice rose anxiously. It was enough for Lyon to recognize it. It was Roy.
What was Roy doing in the Prince’s room?
Roy hadn’t finished his sentence. He’d trailed off; and the silence that followed the exclamation was so tense that Lyon could feel it through the door.
Then the Prince spoke again, his voice low and soft. He was trying to soothe Roy. “Not that first time, I know. I’m sorry I brought it up. But…” There was another silence. “…that is…why you keep coming back…right?”
More silence. Lyon was becoming uneasy about all these silences. They just made her more suspicious about the nature of this conversation.
“Yes,” Roy said finally.
“Good.” Lyon settled down a little at that. No more tension in the air. But before she had a chance to truly relax, the Prince’s next words sent her heart jumping into her throat: “I love you, Roy.”
“Mm…Your Highness…”
Their voices, suddenly filled with passion, at once descended into whispers and the occasional pleasured gasp. An intimate moment was being shared inside that room, and Lyon felt as though she were interfering in it. She felt so dizzy. Her mind was reeling with images and disbelief and shock.
She was hearing things she’d never wanted to hear and things that she’d so desperately wished to have directed at her both at once. She stood there for what seemed like hours in numb blackness…listening.
Tears sprang to her eyes. “Prince…” she whispered…
“Say my name…”
The tears flowed down her cheeks…
“Say my name…”
Her knees began to buckle…
“Roy…say my name…”
She shook her head…
“Ah…! Sutake!”
Lyon collapsed to the floor, unable to contain her sorrows. “Sutake…”
