In Which it Begins
Author’s note: Hi y’all, this is Alex here. This is a co-op story between my awesome friend Ren and I. We’ve worked hard and are still working on this story. We hope you like it!
I'm having a bit of trouble with figuring out how to indent my paragraphs, and if anyone knows what to do, I'd be more than happy to listen! Thanks!
Chapter 1.
Axel rarely showed up at school. There were the occasional in-school holidays, to which Axel would only show up for the parties in the classrooms, mostly because of the food. He also showed up on the first and last days of school, because Roxas would beg it of him, and he never wanted to get on the blonde’s bad side.
So on the first day of his senior year, Axel sat on the thin brick wall that lined the walkway outside of the school. An unlit cigarette dangled from his lips and he had a book in his hands. A familiar blonde head of hair appeared at his side and the boy was soon sitting in front of him.
“You’re actually reading?” Roxas said, astonished. Axel looked up and grinned, the cigarette falling from his lips and into the grass.
“Hell no! I’m looking at the pictures,” Axel explained, lifting the book and turning it to face Roxas. The boy’s eyes widened as he looked at a picture of two men in a very suggestive position. He shoved the book back toward Axel and scowled.
“That’s just like you, Axel,” Roxas rolled his eyes and crossed his arms. The grin never left Axel’s face and he pulled Roxas to him, kissing him harshly.
“And this isn’t like you; why are you here so early?”
“I wanted to make a good impression, but it seems I’m not going to be able to do that with you around,” Roxas looked up into Axel’s eyes.
“Nope,” Axel said, and trailed his eyes over Roxas’s shoulder. Roxas followed the redhead’s gaze and turned.
A boy, older than himself but younger than Axel, was sauntering up the walk with a messenger bag slung over his shoulder. He had his hair styled into a sort of fauxhawk, with random strands that hung into his face instead of being gelled back with the rest. He had light sea-green eyes that were currently scanning his surroundings. Roxas could hear the music blaring from the headphones fastened around the boy’s ears from where he sat, even though he was quite a few yards away.
The boy’s eyes caught the pair and he waved. “Hi!” He said in a not-very-masculine-but-still-too-deep-to-be-anywhere-near-feminine voice. Roxas waved kindly back and Axel just stared. “I’m Demyx,” the boy said when he got closer.
“I’m Roxas; are you new?” Roxas asked and offered a hand to Demyx, who refused it and pulled himself up next to Roxas.
“Yeah, I moved here over the summer. It’s a real bummer there’s no water anywhere in this town, y’know?” Demyx pulled his headphones off and shut down his CD player.
Axel rested his chin on Roxas’s shoulder and smirked at Demyx. “I’m Axel.”
Demyx smiled at him. “It’s nice meeting both of you. Sorry for asking, but are you two um…together?”
Axel kissed Roxas’s neck and looked back at Demyx. “We are. Why?”
Demyx looked down and fidgeted with his hands. “I just…is it accepted here?”
Roxas frowned a little. “Mostly, yes. Nobody here is going to bother anyone about it.”
A small smile greeted Demyx’s lips and he rubbed the tips of his forefingers together. “That’s good. I got bullied a lot at my old school; it’s one of the reasons we decided to move. I never really fit in there at all, and I didn’t have any friends. Will uh--” Demyx froze and looked up at the two and realized he was babbling information that he’d rather not have shared. Their expressions were the same, if not sympathetic. Well, sympathy from Roxas, vague interest from Axel, who was more occupied with sucking on a little point of Roxas’s neck; Roxas didn’t even seem to notice.
“Will we what, Demyx?” Roxas put his hand on the boy’s knee in a comforting gesture; it worked.
“Will you two be my friends?” Demyx put his hand over Roxas’s. Axel stopped and looked up at him.
“Of course we will. We’ll make sure you fit in here, don’t worry. If not with anyone else, then just with us.”
“Thank you,” Demyx said, and the three of them nearly jumped out of their skins when they heard a loud chiming of the school’s one minute warning bell. They hurried inside.

“I don’t want to hear any of you complaining. I don’t care how much it sucks that you little dudes got stuck with phys ed in the morning; it’s not my problem. You’ll do what you’re told in here, I’m not going to let you dudes slack off. Got it? My name’s Xigbar; don’t give me any of that ‘Mr. Braig’ crap.”
Xigbar was their gym class teacher. He looked like he was fresh out of a war, with scars all over and a plain black eye patch over his right eye. His hair was long and black, with streaks of gray-silver throughout, and pulled back in a low ponytail. He was fairly tall, taller than any of the students, and was quite thin. Flat, toned muscles were vaguely visible through his clothing, a good warning to show that he was not as scrawny as his figure implied.
Axel hid an obnoxious yawn behind his hand and indiscreetly slipped his arm around Roxas, who had a distant, spaced-out look in his deep blue eyes. Demyx fiddled with his shoelaces and rubbed his knees, keeping his eyes anywhere but on the teacher.
Roxas’s twin, Sora, sat near the front and kept his eyes transfixed on the keys that Xigbar was twirling around his finger as he talked. An older boy, Riku, with straight, unnatural-looking silver hair and light blue-green eyes, had the fingers of his right hand intertwined with the fingers on Sora’s left.
Zexion, a small sophomore boy, sat quietly against the wall at the back of the gym, his eyes darting back and forth over pages in a small paperback book. He wasn’t wearing physical training clothes like the rest of the students; a doctor’s note forbid he participate in the physical education class, and he had yet to be switched out of it.
“Since this is your first day, I’m going to let you little dudes off easy and you can play basketball or somethin’. I’m going to play too, but if you have questions, feel free to ask,” Xigbar finished his speech and blew an annoying whistle around his neck, scaring the students with the sudden loud noise.

“My name is Luxord, and I’d appreciate it if that’s what you called me, and nothing else,” said their English teacher. He had piercing blue eyes and very light blonde hair, cut short, and facial hair cut neatly around his chin and under his nose.
He spoke with a British lilt, his speech flowing evenly and soothingly, and Demyx knew instantly that this was going to be his favorite class nap-wise. Axel was busy pegging the man, deciding that he had that playful-looking gambler side to him. He’d have to find out later. Zexion, however, couldn’t take his eyes off of the teacher.

Lunch time. Demyx disappeared for the first fifteen minutes and then reappeared and took a seat at their table, looking incredibly relaxed with a smile on his face. His cheeks were flushed and his eyes were glassy. Roxas leaned across the table and looked up at him concernedly.
“Demyx? Are you alright?”
Demyx grinned and touched Roxas’s nose with his forefinger and used his other hand to make a peace sign. “Never better, dude.”
Axel narrowed his eyes a little. “Are you high?”
Demyx leaned back in his chair and looked at Axel with those glassy aquamarine orbs. “As a kite.”
Zexion shook his head a little and sighed irritably. “Why in school? That’s so uncouth.”
“Un-what? You’re just uptight, man, you wanna try some?” Demyx said in a lazy drawl, his words slurring ever-so-slightly. “Makes all your worries go away.”
“No thanks,” Zexion snorted and rested his chin in his hand. “I’m going in the lunch line, anyone want to join me?” He stood.
Roxas stood too. “I will,” he said, glancing at Demyx one last time before departing with Zexion.
Axel crossed his arms and gazed at Demyx, who had found an interest braiding one of the tendrils of hair that hung in front of his face. He did so sloppily and with no real coordination.
“So…I think you weirded my boyfriend out. I don’t think he knows what to do about druggies,” Axel said in a conversational tone. Demyx giggled inanely.
“There’s not much to do man—best you can do is join,” Demyx let go of his braid, which unraveled itself and went back to being a few unruly pieces of hair sticking in front of his forehead, and sat back against the chair, testing the squeak that told him it wasn’t very strong plastic. Axel sat back in his own chair.
“I wouldn’t mind; Roxas would, though, and he’d kick my ass into next week, so I can’t help you there,” Axel shrugged and took a bite out of a candy bar magically produced from his pocket. This was going to be an interesting senior year.

Author’s note: Sorry for the shortness. It's just the intro. The next chapter, which is in progress, is already 13 pages long. XD So yeah. We love reviews of all kinds! Comments, criticisms, critiques, anything—please drop us a line! Although, if all you do is say “This sucks. Go die.” then you can just leave your comments in your head. Those don’t help anyone. Go ahead and criticize, but don’t be rude about it, please. Thanks, and see you next time!
