It All Began After Sigma
There I stood victorious, atop a high ledge as most heroes do…
But I did not feel as such. Sigma’s reign of terror had finally come to an end, but at the cost of an old, dear friend.
I’m sorry…
“X! My goodness, I thought I’d never see you again!”
Dr. Cain looked surprisingly calm for someone who spoke like he’d just seen a ghost.
“Doctor, I stopped him. I did it. It’s all over.”
“Oh X, look at you. You need serious repairs and an entire overhaul. As much as I’d love to say you can rest easy now, well…I can’t.”
I was tired. My mind thought of nothing but him and that moment after I’d eliminated Vile. He had given me his power. He sacrificed himself so I could put an end to a madman’s terror. The last thing I wanted was to hear more bad news.
“I knew once I became a Maverick Hunter I’d never rest easy. Even when all the Mavericks are finally brought to justice…”
Dr. Cain stopped me before I could finish a sentence I could not finish.
“X, there’s no time! Look, we have reports of highly increased Maverick activity in the lower mines where Armored Armadillo’s base once was. “
I clenched my fist as I spoke through my gritting teeth.
“No! No, I killed Sigma! You hear me? I KILLED him! There should be no more Mavericks! The killing stops here!”
In a furious state, I rushed to my quarters when Dr. Cain tapped a button on his console and locked the door out of his lab.
“X! Stop going over what’s just happened and focus on your task! Just investigate the matter at hand! I’m not asking you to destroy everything you see, now am I?”
Strangely, without thinking I made my way to the repair chamber and prepared for another scout mission.
I’m sorry…
All I could see was chaos. Murders, slayings, annihilation of everything. Something within these mines was hell-bent to destroy without purpose. I had a feeling I knew what was about to happen.
I came upon the remnants of a large rock-crusher. It almost looked like it was in pain…for a lifeless machine. Its insides were out, its skin a mere grayish chalkboard of its former self. But within the mangled remains of the beast, I saw it. It was a glint, a glimmer, a small beam of blue emanating from inside.
The crystal from his helmet was glowing ominously and would change its pulse randomly. The tiniest of smirks etched into his weathered face. The bizarrely bright red tint from his battle armor. I was staring at him. I was staring at him directly in the face.
“…Zero…how-“
“How am I here? Why am I doing this? Is that all you have to say to the man that gave himself up to you? Well, X, I’ll have you know I wasn’t completely destroyed. If anything, I was GLAD you failed to destroy Vile. I was destroyed and awoke a new man.”
I took a few steps back. He was advancing on me very aggressively.
“Zero, what’s going on?”
He was twiddling his Z-Saber trigger, almost taunting me to confront him.
“X, you don’t know what’s going on. You never killed Sigma. Fine, you can rest at ease knowing you didn’t take another life. Instead you may relish in the creation of a new one!”
That was it. The final piece in the puzzle my mind was trying to convey. The Sigma virus.
“But…what? How? I…”
“Enough!”
He sped at me with Saber in hand. I paced left and began running alongside him. With every slice of his blade he drew closer to me by the moment. I ducked, I jumped, I even somersaulted away from his advances.
“Zero! Why are you doing this? What of everything we’ve accomplished up to this-“
Again I had no time as he leapt onto my back preparing to gore my circuits with his Z-Saber. I took a leg to his side, pushed back and began charging my Buster. In a split second, I spun 180 degrees and fired. I struck him in his right hand, forcing him to drop his weapon.
“Zero, please stop this! I don’t want to destroy you!”
“X, you already destroyed me back there at Sigma’s fortress. Your foolish attempt at redemption won’t stop me from doing what I have to do.”
Weaponless, he charged towards me. I tried to stay on guard, but he caught my left leg and thrust me around until I spun out of control towards the bedrock wall. Pieces of my armor were forever embedded in the rock, and my awareness was put off for a brief period. Just long enough to get back his weapon, I guess. A flurry of gunshots emerged from my arm, pelting him several times in the chest. He wouldn’t slow down, though. His eyes became red with fire as his blade came crashing down on my blaster. Sparks punctured the air. I felt no urge to scream as no one would hear me all the way down here.
“Agh, Zero enough! I can’t fight you anymore! I want you to think things through! Why are you so sure that my destruction will benefit your viral intent? Why not just infect me?”
“Because…I don’t want you to become what I am.”
He let down his guard, albeit for a second. I took the opportunity to sweep kick his feet out from under him, leap up and snatch his Saber. With the upperhand, and a blade at his throat, I was in command.
“Zero! Now that you are willing to talk, tell me why it is you want to destroy me.”
That tiny smirk came back to his face. It would be almost comforting if it weren’t for our situation.
“Heh. I told you, X. I don’t want you to suffer what I am suffering. You could never be a Maverick. You don’t have what it takes.”
“I’ll take that as a point of pride.”
“Please do.”
He then grabbed my hand, the one with his very own Z-Saber clutched within only millimeters from his throat, and he thrust the blade firmly downward into his chest.
“Now…get…out of here! I can’t keep fighting you like this! Leave!”
Furious with guilt I screamed, “No!” and hoisted him onto my shoulders.
“You’re coming back to Dr. Cain’s with me!”
Zero groaned softly.
“It’s a mistake. X, it’s a mistake. Don’t do this. Please, if you’re my…friend…”
Then it was my turn to smile.
“You ARE my friend, Zero. Now shut up while I rescue you.”
As the intermittent sparklings fused the Z-Saber to his chest, I carried him back up to the surface and back to Cain’s. I still may not have felt like a hero, but I knew that this friendship created more heroic gestures than the finest epic novel. He would be just fine after some fine-tuning and a reprogramming, but I knew this wasn’t the end of the Sigma virus. Too many Mavericks. At least I’ll have a dear, old friend to back me up. And to think we almost killed each other today.
