Prologue
X lay motionless on the cold steel operating table in Dr. Cain's lab. The only thing he remembers is witnessing the destruction of Maverick Hunter HQ before his very eyes.
"So...many bodies..."
Dr. Cain was fiddling with a complicated-looking device in the corner of the lab.
"Shh. Be still, X. You were hit pretty hard. Thank goodness I had my top Hunter Zero in the area."
"That's right, punk. I saved your life. The average Reploid would've died but you're too damn stubborn for that."
The red armor from Zero's chest glimmered so brightly from the beaming lights that X had to shut his eyes once more.
"That's right, X. Be still. In a matter of moments it'll be complete."
As Dr. Cain added the finishing touches to the device, he raised it in the air and basked in its awesome completion.
"Yes...with this new X-Buster, you will be able to fight alongside Zero and hopefully bring my beloved Reploids to sanity."
As X looked over at Zero and his stoic expression, he knew he would be in for something very dangerous.
"Alright, Doctor. I'm ready. Ready to redeem the lives of those I witnessed perish. Ready to bring to justice all the Mavericks out there fighting against our cause of peace-"
Zero grunted loudly.
"And hopefully ready to kick lots of metallic ass. Just stay with me rookie, and try to keep up."
