Welcome to the Zerg
Chapter 1: The Mission
Standing in the briefing room of the bunker, the mission was being given to a newly made squad of recruits. The mission wasn’t a serious deal due to the newly recruits having practically no experience in the field, but it was still a mission which needed to be done with some good planning. Pretty much a field exercise with live enemies.
The squad consisted of five troops who were pretty decently equipped for novices, The squad had three marines, one medic, and one goliath pilot. The goliath was used as a means of heavy duty fire support due to this mission being live enemies and therefore a health risk, they would never have trusted recruits with such a dangerous vehicle otherwise.
Laura, the medic, was busy stocking up her medical supplies while the briefing went on but still managing to pay attention. She was pretty young, about 16, the minimal requirement for the Terran forces, she had short blond hair which she cut to be able to fit inside her helmet and a rather nice toned body which even the bulky medical armor did little to hide her athletic physique. Other than being completely decked with medical equipment, her only known weapon was a rather shitty pistol that was just barely enough to take down a zergling, apparently the military thought that if a medic was reduced to fighting, the team was too screwed to even bother putting up a fight.
Jarob, the goliath pilot, was difficult to make out a description due to his body being almost completely garbed in uniform including the oxygen mask used for piloting. He had a side arm pistol and a shot gun for traveling outside of his goliath, but his real weaponry was the 15 foot tall battle walker vehicle armed with two mini-guns and a series of rocket launchers to take down both land and air troops. Jarob was wearing a rather skin tight navy green flight suit almost as if he was an air pilot rather than a ground one and the only exposed parts of his flesh were around the eyes due to his large goggles he wore. Jarob was probably the oldest of the squad due to being allowed to pilot a goliath and he was 19 years old.
Luis, Robert, and Kenny were all dressed in the same marine suit which was so incredibly bulky with armor plating that it was nearly impossible to tell their actual body physique. They each carried the same side arm pistol, although modified with armor piercing rounds as well as carrying the assault riffles which could hold a pretty impressive clip of 200 rounds each with armor piercing bullets.
Luis and Robert both had red hair, although Luis had his in a buzz cut while Robert preferred to grow his to medium length yet still short enough to fit inside his retractable visor helmet. Kenny had blond hair which he kept in a short Mohawk style. Luis was 17 years old while Robert was 18, Kenny was 16.
“Alright troops, here is what we have planned!” said the general as he read off the briefing, “According to our ghosts, we have a rather small outpost of Zerg located about three miles away. The hive is only the size of a foot ball field at the moment, so we can’t risk giving away our position for something so small. We figure a squad of your kind should easily be able to go in there and destroy the hive, due to the small size, it shouldn’t be too difficult, they only have five, maybe 10 zerglings guarding the place at the most.” said the general and then he paused to let them all study the map and reports on the screen before continuing with how they would attack.
“According to our reports in past battles, the entire hive cluster is all connected to their major base, the Hive, which acts very much like our command centers. If you kill the hive, then all their infested landscape will begin to rot and decay rapidly. So kill the Hive, and you kill the hive cluster… We will be sending you in by drop ship but we can’t get too close. They have spore towers and they can take down our ship if they get within range.” he finished as he dismissed the soldiers.
As they walked out of the bunker, they saw Jarob’s goliath as he began to climb up one of it’s biped legs to fit into the cock pit and pilot the thing towards the drop ship as the rest of his squad mates were already boarding it. After a few minutes of prepping and fueling up, they launched off for their first big assignment.
“Man, I can’t wait to have some fun!” said Robert as he was giving his guns a second checking to make sure they were in working order as they felt the ship blasting into the air.
“Don’t get too excited, the rest of us might need some pain killers too!” said Laura with a laugh as the rest of the squad laughed along with it, all except for Jarob who seemed to be quiet until Kenny spoke up by taping one of his armored fists on the right leg of the walker.
“And this cheap ass is walking around the base in his mech warrior rip off while we’re walking around getting slashed at!” causing the rest of the squad to smile at the joke but also cringe at the realization of what Kenny had said. Only at that moment did they finally realize that this was actually a real live mission, there was a pretty decent chance they could die on it.
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep your asses covered…” chuckled Jarob as they felt the ship lurch, indicating it was time to get out . The captain confirmed it with a witty remark about abandoning ship as the door to the transport area opened up and the soldiers hopped out for their first mission as the drop ship rose back up into the air and spoke on their radio command.
“I’ll be back to pick you up when you give the word. If you’re gone for more than 48 hours, we’ll presume you dead!” she called before flying away.
As they looked around, they saw that they were only 100 yards from the hive cluster as they began to head for it and realized just how small the cluster was. They could have wiped this place clean in seconds if they sent a full force here and nobody would ever know!
As they drew nearer, they noticed the structures that made it up, but to their great surprise, there was no Zerg at all to be seen! They passed by the zergling spawning pool which they expected something to leap out at them which it didn’t they even crossed right into the heart of the cluster and no Zerg to be seen.
“What the hell’s going on?” asked Louis as they were confused as they finally arrived at the Hive which was the source of the infestation. Not one single Zerg in sight, not even their larva or drones were around. The young squad members finally decided to just go ahead with their mission and raised their weapons to fire upon the living building which was what all Zerg buildings were. They actually evolved from drones, thus making the buildings a living organism.
The very instant they had their guns aimed and ready to fire, there was an almost deafening boom as if somebody had just blown up some TNT as the ground around the cluster erupted and no less than 30 zerglings burst from their hiding places in the infested soil with a loud hissing screech!
“Holy fuck!” shouted Kenny as he opened fire on the small but agile zerglings while the rest of his squad joined in, Jarob began to blast away at them and nearly wiped out a fourth of their numbers with just three seconds worth of firing, but soon afterwards, another explosion from the ground produced a hydralisk behind him who used it’s long blades to slash at the mech and sever halfway through it’s legs, causing the machine to malfunction and fall over, thus knocking Jarob out of the cockpit with a loud yelp of surprise and pain. He quickly reached for his shot gun from his back and opened fire at the serpentine alien, but in his dazed state, he only managed to blow off part of it’s right arm which it hissed and charged him just in time for Robert to fill it with five bullets, thus sending the creature down and dead.
“Fuck the briefing, there is way more here than just 10 fucking zergling!” Shouted Kenny as they continued to pick off the remaining Zergling without the aid of their battle walker. The three marines were crowded around Laura to protect her while Jarob was slowly retreating to aid them as he continued firing his shot gun while walking backwards. Just as he was arriving to his squad mates, the zergling were finally disposed of. With a sigh of relief as well as bodies practically teaming with adrenaline, the squad turned back to the Hive and ready to finish it off as they prepared to attack, only to hear the fatal click of empty guns.
“we’re out of fucking ammo!” shouted Louis as the briefing had not given them extra clips, having not expected there to be such heavy resistance and certainly not expecting the destruction of a goliath! They turned suddenly when they heard a rather scratchy and high pitched voice from behind them.
“Seems you underestimated the swarm… Terran scum!” which as they turned, they saw a hydralisk was standing behind them with a small militia of Zerg behind him, “We placed this base here simply for a decoy, we have a transport tunnel just a few yards away to ambush stupid marines such as yourself…” said the Hydralisk. “My name is Goldishlak, and I am the captain here, I hope you’ll serve us better than you served the Terran. Prepare to infest them!” the hydralisk finished and as he shouted the last part, five zerglings and three hydralisk charged at the young squad as they screamed in panic.
“And be careful, I have very special plans for each of them when we infest them…” hissed Goldishlak as the zerglings began to rip apart the protective armor of the marines with their claws but being careful to leave the marines alive.
