Beyond my Fears
Chapter 1
The Shepherd Fails
The moon clung to the night sky, while around it, stars arrayed themselves as a perfect painting of the heavens. The young guardian felt the tug of responsibility to guard his treasure, the one item that ties his heart to his ancestors. He could almost hear their call beyond the grave. As always, they warned him to watch carefully and assume noting.
The echidna's rich red fur contrasted against the cold, gray stone around him and even more sharply to the green glow of his treasure. The Master Emerald, a gem so powerful, that it controls the most erratic force that destroys elegance but is, at the same time, completely necessary; Chaos. The day falls to night, and night, to day. However, Knuckles' wonder for the splendor of the Emerald never wavered, even in the slightest.
The guardian let his body fall to the floor and positioned himself against his treasure. His body rippled with muscles that boast strength, but to his very core, he felt tired from exercise.
The loneliness of the island that floats in the heavens rarely got to him, but he heard his thoughts in the wind. How gently they will whisper, "Be free, release yourself." or "Unlink the chains of the oppression of silly tradition." The echidna found it difficult to discern whether the voices were his or just his imagination. Perhaps, it was better to never know.
As the night went on, he felt his eyelids grow heavy. He began to doze when the wind ruffled the leaves of a bush. He could here the rabbit flee under the bush. Only in tiredness could he imagine such things. He must have mistaken the wind and creatures for dangerous foes. It may have been just a desire for some form of excitement.
Knuckles sighed with a hint of want, his eyes closing as his mouth opened. His arms stretch out, and likewise, his legs stretched.
The cold grip of metal fingers suddenly surrounded the red fur's neck, picking the echidna off the ground in the vice-like grip. Dark red eyes, made of pixels stared into the violet eyes of a suddenly reactive Knuckles.
"Hi-yah!" The echidna exclaimed he thrust his foot, connecting with a metallic thud. He thought, "Just as I suspected, Metal Sonic."
"Knuckles..." The metal being said, not even reacting to the attack, "After all our fights, you think you alone are a match for me?"
The metal being had changed very little. It still appeared crazed and power hungry. His voice was scratchy, like the recording on a cheap cassette. His blue frame was small, but held unknown strength.
Knuckles was ready for the menace. He learned, from Tikal, how to prevent the Chaos Waves of the Chaos Emeralds with the Master Emerald. But he used a theory of transfering energy from them to him via the Master Emerald was correct, but limited. Nevertheless, he could end the fight in a matter of moments.
His gloved hand went out and touched the emerald, and the awesome power of chaos flooded his body. His fur began to change to a white coloration then back to red. White, red, white, red; it altered itself in a steady pattern, even with the beating of his heart. His spines moved fluidly, as though in water.
He moved his foot back slowly, and Metal looked quizzically at the echidna. At that moment, Knuckles rushed recklessly at the metallic frame and crushed its chest, blowing away about 20% of its left side. He blew through, and his charge about half a mile past the fake hedgehog. He turned, but Metal had already grouped itself.
The surge of energy had already began to wear out. The effects did not appear to last as long in organic beings as with robots.
In his thoughts, Knuckles decided to charge again, while remaining wary of the Master Emerald. The blue robotic badnik could barely keep up, even while being able to reassemble.
As the battle raised on, it was over. Knuckles had an unpresedented advantage of guarding the emerald while using it to fuel an unbelievable amount of energy; however, Metal got on top of it. Metal began to fly around after standing on it to absorb energy, but Knuckles skillfully fought the robot there too. So, Metal finally caved in.
"Argh!" Metal exclaimed while grabbing Knuckles' leg mid-kick, "Enough!" Metal through the echidna into the ground, but the red fur would not give up and quickly reclaimed his footing. Metal continued, "If I can't steal this, then I will simply take the Chaos Emerald." His eyes gained an even more sinister glow, "But I will first destroy this emerald so it can never stop me!"
Knuckles ran quickly, but both were powered up to the maximum, and Metal was closer. He blew the Master Emerald apart, stealing as man pieces as he could gather. He also kicked away all the shards he could manage to scatter before taking off with the shards.
Knuckles collapsed to the ground on his knees. He shivered as the wind picked up, and while none were around to see it, he cried. The shepherd had fallen for the third time.
