Storm!

“Of course, Lady Lyndis, Kent and I would be happy to ride ahead and get a lay of the land. Then we’ll rest tonight and head out for Bern in the morning!”

Sain exclaimed as he exited the meeting tent and walked along the pathway. All around him, Lyn’s company was performing their various tasks. He noticed Bartre and Dorcas playing cards, Serra was chasing after Erk, demanding that he stand still, and some of the younger ones were playing games. Even in the midst of it all, everything seemed to be normal.

Sain slipped into the tent that he shared with Sain and some of the other men and informed him of their assignment. Kent nodded and sat down on the cot, grabbing a small cloth and polishing his gleaming lance.

“I guess we’ll leave within the hour. I need time to gather my weapons and supplies before we set out. Never know what you’ll run into out there.” Kent noted as he slid his sword into the scabbard and exited, going to outfit his horse.

Sain ran a hand through his chocolate brown hair and left again, looking around. He noticed Rebecca outside of camp, standing near a tree, carving something into it. Sain hurried over, braking to a halt right beside her.

“Oh, what joy! The heavens have smiled on me and blessed me with this beautiful angel! Tell me, fair maiden, what is it that you are up to?”

Rebecca jumped in surprise, thinking that she was alone. She looked up and smiled at Sain, her pearly white teeth gleaming. “Oh, nothing. But I would advise you to take a couple steps away.” Rebecca warned as she walked backwards, lifting her bow and stringing it with an arrow. Sain stared at her curiously…

Rebecca took the string and slowly drew it back, both eyes trained straight ahead. Whoosh! She let go and the arrow soared, slicing through the air. Sain hurled his body to the ground, his face buried in his hands.

The arrow bit into the tree, sending a small shower of dirt and bark to the ground below. Sain heard the noise and climbed to his feet, brushing dust and muck from his hair and face. He noticed that a target was carved into the tree, and that the arrow was resting slightly off center, narrowly avoiding the very middle.

“Ah, well, yes. Target practice. Well, I’ll just leave you to that, my dear. Good day.”

Sain wonder off, his head hung. Every woman here seemed to have something wrong with them, or already interested in someone else. Was it them?... It was hit him?...

Sain headed over to where Kent was just finishing up on stocking his horse with his weapons and supplies. Kent turned and noticed his friend, but completely oblivious to what he seemed to be feeling. “If we head out now, Sain, we should be able to make it back shortly after nightfall. Do you have everything packed?” Sain replied with a glum nod. “Well, excellent, let’s head out.”

The two climbed aboard their steeds and went off at a steady pace. They didn’t speak a word as the continued along. The winter air was chilling, as the sun began to lower over the horizon, their breath came out in short gasps from the blistering cold. It was evident that neither the horses nor the humans were comfortable; it was much too cold to be out on a night like this.

Snow began to fall as night crept upon them. Within several minutes, a storm had begun to pick up. The two knights had lost the trail, and were pretty much going around in circles. The horses were going into a frenzy of sorts; they sped around wildly, their riders having to hold onto them tightly to stay on.

The snow was deep, and was growing higher with every second that passed. The two knights couldn’t see a foot in front of them. They were in a ridge of sorts, with no land on either side of them. If the horses bucked anymore they would surely be flung over the ledge.

Sain dug his heels into both sides of his horse to gain control, but this only angered the animal even more. It gave one last powerful shake of its body and Sain was hurled off. He rolled over to the side, digging his gloved hand into the snow for support. Any second he would go flying off the edge.

“SAIN!”

Kent yelled as he jumped off his horse, grabbing hold of Sain’s outstretched hand. He pulled as hard as he could, but he just wasn’t quite strong enough. “Kent, just let me go… I’ll be fine. You think I’m going to let some snow do me in?” He said, a smile plastered on his face. Kent couldn’t help but smile at Sain. Even now, he was still joking around.

Kent pulled with all his strength. Sain was slowly rising up… but fate had other plans for them. Kent’s horse slammed into him, flinging him forward. It was just enough to send him reeling over the edge. The two knights squeezed their clasped hands as they both fell to certain death below.
