Linked Minds
Ryu stood at the edge of a cliff, the wind blowing in his face. The silence of the area was enough to let him focus on what he wanted. He didn't need to look down as he knew exactly where the edge was. He was determined to get this new technique right. He put his feet together, then jumped backwards, his legs trailing and kicking the invisible opponent.
“Haiya,” Ryu yelled as his flip went right around and he landed in the exact same place he had jumped from. He quickly gained his balance, and then replaced his footing into an open stance. His eyes never became unsure of their focus and Ryu's face didn't break into a smile. He just stood there, waiting for that unknown something.
Meanwhile; in Hong Kong.
Fei Long had fully recovered from his fight with Ryu a few months ago. His injuries had healed, his martial art skills were back in their style, but there was still something missing. He couldn't tell what it was. But he shrugged it off as he went to do some training. He stood on the mats in a fairly quiet and private Dojo. He put up his fists and started to practice his attacks.
'Speed, fierce, turn, kick,' he thought as his attacks moved quickly. He stopped suddenly and looked into a corner of the Dojo. He thought he had seen someone, but it must have been a trick in the light, because the person wasn't there any more. Fei Long shrugged and returned to his practice session.
Later that night; Fei Long's private estate.
Fei Long sat down in his armchair, looking at his drink. he had trained long and hard, but he couldn't understand something. All day he had this feeling of being watched, like a presence that wasn't visible. He had a sip of his cold drink and wiped his head with the glass. It had been a hot day, and all he wanted was to relax for a little while in the cool breeze of his air conditioning. It must have been the heat and the training that caused this odd feeling of being watched, nothing to worry about.
The Same Night; the Mountains
Ryu suddenly snapped out of it. He fell backwards and looked around. time had passed him, but where had he been? The last thing he remembered was perfecting his back-flip attack, but that had been during the day. Now at night, he had suddenly lost a number of hours. Yet, he felt he had spent the day with someone he knew. which was imposable. No one could get to the spot he was in without him knowing.
'Maybe I have been training too much.' Ryu thought. 'I must have blanked out.' But as Ryu turned from the cliff and walked away, something urged him to look East. As he did, he remembered his few friends in Japan and Hong Kong. Maybe he had zoned into a place where their subconscious spent a lot of time. His master had mentioned such a place before, but Ryu had never understood it. He shrugged and decided he would go and look into it.
“Next stop, Hong Kong.” Ryu said to himself. He didn't feel tired, and was ready to climb down the cliff so he could continue his journey. He just hoped his mind didn't blank on him again while he was on the cliff.
The following Morning; Hong Kong Market.
Fei Long had been wondering the market for nearly two hours. He felt the need to buy something for a friend, but yet somehow, he wasn't sure what he was getting, or whom it was for. He walked the whole market, and nothing really caught his attention to be worth the person who was coming.
“But who is coming?” Fei Long asked. “Who is coming here to see me? And what for?” He looked up and felt those eyes watching him again. He turned in their direction and saw a store he had overlooked. Fei Long went to it and looked at the items for sale. It had a lot of martial arts gear.
“So, my present visitor is a fighter. But is he coming peacefully, or with the idea of a fight?” The moment these words had escaped his lips, Fei Long had the sudden feeling of someone holding him. It wasn't threatening, but comforting. Not being ready, Fei Long tried to shake the feeling off. Finally, he picked up a new book on Kung Fu and a small lucky pendant that a fighter could wear. He paid for them and headed home. As he was heading there, he looked out towards the sea, which was visible from near his home, and saw the boats with tourists coming in.
“Another day, another crowd.” Fei Long said with a smile as he continued home.
On the same boat Fei Long had seen.
Ryu was sitting in his cabin resting. The hike down the mountain had gotten him thinking. Why was he heading back to Hong Kong? Ryu wasn't sure. But at the same time, another feeling came over him. He couldn't tell what it was, as the last person who had felt this way for him had been Ken. But Ken was just married and living in New York, so it wasn't Ken who was calling him.
“Am I doing this because I have no love?” Ryu asked. “Am I going to my destined partner? I am not even sure of my own sexuality. My master taught me to block it out when I needed to, and to let it out when I could. But I think I have not followed my master's teachings to the letter. I haven't allowed my sexuality out. I have suppressed it, ever since that night.”
