Authors Notes: This is my first fanfic to write that involves these kind of things in them, but I am not a newbie to writing, I have written other stories and have read many of this type on here. Please, do not post a review if you are going to bash me or the opinions of my girlfriend as she has a hand in some ideas, but the majority of this is me though. Please enjoy it though, I have worked really hard on this.

Chapter 1: Wonderment
Shadow stood on a nearby hill looking down at the nearby city of Station Square. Shadow rarely went into the city though unless he needed to eat, then it was essential for him to enter, but otherwise he just wandered around the place not getting to close to notice he was nearby. He did this to many cities. Shadow would approach and just stand nearby and not enter. He felt not to welcome because of things he had done in the past.
Shadow, at one point in time, had been really evil and done many wrong things when he listened to all of what Dr. Eggman had told him to do to be comfortable in the world. Shadow, upon hearing that someone might could bring him peace and help him complied with the doctor and willingly did the things the doctor commanded him to do. Shadow would break into buildings and willingly kill people just to fulfill his missions and get what the doctor asked him to do in hopes that his full memories of everything in his past was clear to him.
Shadow’s memory was in many fragments and he only remembered bits and pieces of things from his past. The things he did remember were not too good to remember. One really bad one was of him running with a girl down a long corridor from some armed soldiers who were wanting them dead. Shadow and the girl that he knew for some reason as only Maria, ran down the hall for the escape pods. As the two of them got there, Shadow was placed in one but before he could protest it was closed without Maria in it. Shadow began yelling for Maria to get in the pod and not do this to him. She then spoke softly to Shadow as he looked at her through the glass of the tube he was trapped in. “...For all the people who live on that planet... give them a chance to be happy. Let them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason that you were brought into this world. Sayonara, Shadow, the Hedgehog..." With this, Shadow was released and sent to the earth, but not before he witness one of the soldiers from GUN shoot Maria, killing her. This really hurt him and haunted him always. This was the end of his memory at the moment.
Shadow today was feeling hungry and was thinking he better go into the city to see about what he may find to eat. As soon as he entered the city, just as always, eyes immediately started staring at him cautiously. People had learned that he was not attacking people now, but they were so cautious that no one would associate with him. He barely got service at the places he went to, for most would not serve him. Simple fast food was usually the way to go since most of them did not care who it was as long as money was given.
Shadow quietly sat alone in the back of the restaurant as he ate the burger he had ordered for himself. He sat there and stared out the window, out into the darkness and lit up nightlife of the city with a small frown on his face, but not big enough for other to worry about him. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway since he was the only one in the place since it was getting close to midnight as he sat there eating. It didn’t bother him, since he had grown used to it.
Shadow did like his privacy but it sometimes seemed to be a bit too much sometimes. He hardly ever talked or did anything since he had left Eggman to go out on his own, since he no longer trusted the doctor after he had betrayed him so many times. Shadow had his own thoughts and was done with the doctor controlling him like this. When Shadow had decided he had paid a visit to the doctor that he would not soon forget.

Shadow entered Eggman’s base as if nothing was wrong. The doctor let Shadow come walking up thinking this was just Shadow returning from one of his tasks that he sent him on, and he was just in need of a rest. Unknown to Eggman though, Shadow had his won motives with he was walking inside the base. “I am tired of the doctor telling me what to do all the time. I have grown tired of him and will show him what I think of his bossing me around and telling me what to do. It is time I live my own life and not his orders. This no longer brings me happiness, thus this is not what I must have been destined to do.”, thought Shadow as he was entering the base. He had been pondering to do this for many weeks now, and after all that time he finally is going to take his stand and fight back.
Eggman was sitting going over his next scheme to conquer the world and not have Sonic interfere in it, when suddenly the door was bashed in off its bolts and thrown across the room into a pile of rubble. The doctor turned around so fast he nearly twisted his neck in such shock. “What the hell!” yelled Eggman as he saw the destruction to his door. He then was even more confused when he saw who had caused the destruction. “SHADOW!!!! WHAT’S THE MEANING OF THIS!” yelled the doctor really furious at the hedgehog at the moment. Shadow had an evil grin on his face as entered the room walking towards Eggman. As he got closer and closer, the grin started going away and was being replaced by a mad like scowl that showed the hedgehog meant serious business now. Eggman, normally calm around Shadow was actually kind of worried at what he was seeing. He tried to keep calm and at least find out what this was all about.
Shadow now stood but just a few feet from the doctor staring him down. “Doctor, I have made a choice. I am not going to listen to your bidding anymore. From now on, I do things my way and no your way. I have a purpose for being in this world and after a while of doing your bidding, I know this is not it. You may have given me shelter, but that is not what I want. I can take care of myself. So, I’m out of here, but first, I think I’ll have a little fun with your precious base.” said Shadow
Before Eggman could do anything Shadow was throwing chaos spears around destroying all of his machines. “NO! Shadow stop this at once!” yelled the doctor furious at what he was seeing happening around him. Shadow threw a chaos spear into the machine behind the doctor and Eggman was sent flying across the room and into one of his hard metal walls.
Once Shadow had finished destroying everything he saw that looked important in the room, he walked over and picked the front half of the doctor up off the ground to make him look at him. He could pick him all the way because of Eggman’s girth, but this was good enough. Eggman looked up into Shadow’s eyes that were filled with hatred for the doctor. It was obvious this may not end to pretty for him.
“Well doctor, looks like you are beaten. I knew you were truly a wimp all this time. I have been working my ass of for nothing. You are not even worthy of my time.” said Shadow. He then pulled back his fist and punched the doctor hard in the stomach and then punched him in the jaw knocking the doctor clean out with blood coming off of his lip since Shadow had split the doctor lip wide open. Shadow then released his grip on the doctor and he fell to the ground unconscious with a small patch of blood forming around the doctor’s face.
Shadow then turned and walked out where the door had used to be and left the base and was heading for the country side with no resistance at all, mostly because on his way out, Shadow destroyed all robots and weapons in his site. He was going to be sure the doctor could not retaliate for a long time. Shadow had made quite sure of that as he headed off into the distance to be on his own.
Unknown to Shadow, Eggman was waking up now. His lip was still bleeding some and there were some huge bruises on his stomach from where Shadow had punched him. “That damn hedgehog, look what he did to me and my base. It’s ruined.” said Eggman furious right now. He then looked up in shock. “Oh My God! Please don’t tell me he hurt my latest project.” said Eggman. He ran over to a raggedy looking bookshelf and removed one of the books and it started to turn. On the other side of the shelf was a huge tube with something inside of it. It was another hedgehog, just with one major difference, this one was a female.
Eggman was relieved to see that the inactive girl was not damaged at all. The same could not be said for the rest of his base though, it was totally ruined. He could either move to another base or rebuild. He was tempted to just move on, but this project may die if moved or activated before it was ready. On the bottom was a list of her progression and her name. It simply read, Nocture.
“At least Shadow missed damaging Nocture. She is only a few weeks until her growth is far enough along so that I can activate her. This may not be Shadow’s DNA used to make her, but the DNA I got will be good enough.” said Eggman. He picked up his forms and looked them over as he examined her through the tube and the liquid she floated in. “Good, good, you are growing nicely, you will be ready soon.” said Eggman as he placed the folders back and shut her back into her dark area behind the bookcase to continue developing.
“This will be my most brilliant plan ever. Using the DNA of the one they call Amy Rose, my new Project: Nocture will go out and take care of her, kill or capture makes no difference to me, but with her gone and in my possession, Sonic will have no choice but to surrender to me. This plan is perfect. Screw Shadow, he was not essential to the plan anyway. Soon, my plan will go in effect and with that hedgehog out of my way, I shall finally be able to start on my plans for global conquest and I can finally start my Eggman Empire that I have wanted for so long. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” laughed Eggman evilly as he started making robots to begin work on cleaning and repairing his base.

Shadow sat in his seat eating his burger still reflecting on how he got to this position he was in. He lived and slept where ever he could. He ate when he had the money to, and just wandered from city to city not really having anywhere to go to. He was basically all alone with no where to go looking for his place to belong.
Shadow hasn’t even had contact with Sonic or any of the others since he left Eggman’s base. This brought his spirits down even more because he couldn’t even spar or fight with the blue hedgehog. It actually made him feel livelier to occasionally have a fight with someone, but if he fought now with anyone other than the ones he knew, he might become a fugitive and he was still trying to get people to trust him, which was not going to well at all.
Just then someone entered the fast food joint. It was someone that Shadow was not familiar with. It was a female Black hedgehog. Her bangs on the top of her head were a dark red, and also the bottom half of her hair on her head had that same darkish red color to it. The rest of her body was black with occasional grey in parts. She was wearing a blue dress and skirt with a pair of long blue boots on her feet. She also had a power ring wrapped around each of her arms at her wrist. She looked familiar to someone he had seen in the past, but it was definitely not her though.
Shadow watched at the hedgehog walked over to cashier to place and order and get something to eat. She ordered a burger just like he had and she soon got her food and started to find a place to sit. That is when she finally noticed him there and actually made her way over to him. Shadow wondered why she would actually be approaching him and not running away or to eat at another corner of the restaurant, but none the less, she was heading straight for him. She was soon there at his table looking down at him.
“Um, hi there, Shadow isn’t it?” asked the girl inquiring of him. Shadow kind of fiddled one of his fries around and then looked up to her. “Yes, that would be me.” said Shadow answering her plain and simple. “Do you mind if I sit with you here? There is no one else here and I hate sitting alone.” said the girl. Shadow sometimes didn’t like strangers, because you never know what you could be getting yourself into if you start talking with just any body that walks up, but him not having a decent conversation with anyone in a few weeks, was kind of taking its toll on him. So a conversation may not be so bad.
“I guess you can sit.” said Shadow nodding to her. “Why thank you.” said the girl taking a seat across from him. “So, what brings someone like you into this place at such a late hour of the night?” asked the girl. Shadow just looked around the place now not really wanting to answer but he couldn’t help it. “I’m just here for a meal and then I’ll be on my way.” said Shadow eating some of his fries in front of him. He had already finished his burger and half of his drink, so he was almost ready to go.
“By the way, my name is Darkness, if you even wanted to know.” said Darkness smiling at Shadow as she began eating some of her burger. Shadow continued eating some more acting as if he had not heard and then looked up. “I see, Darkness huh, nice name.” said Shadow actually commenting her some. “Thank you Shadow, yours is a nice name too.” said Darkness smiling happily at him.
Shadow usually didn’t complement people like that. Maybe there was something about this girl that didn’t annoy him or something, because all was not going nuts at her sitting there with him. He then looked up again. “Why are you out so late?” asked Shadow inquiring. “I’m a bit of a night owl. I prefer to do things late, so as to avoid a lot of the rush. Plus, I like looking at the city all lit up at night.” said Darkness.
Shadow had never really paid much attention to all the lights outside in the city. He was usually only concerned with food and nothing else, so he could be in and out of the city as quickly as possible. “I see, at least you have a good excuse, better than mine would ever be.” said Shadow. Darkness seemed confused at this as she continued eating. “You seem a little depressed about something Shadow. You care to talk about it?” asked Darkness taking a sip of her drink.
Shadow was not going to tell her the truth about everything, especially his visions or memories, because people always thought of him as insane when he told anyone about what was going through his mind. Some things were just better left unsaid. “Yes, I do have things on my mind, but I would rather not mention them and burden you with my problems.” said Shadow. He hated saying his feelings so much. They hurt him and burdening someone else with them was not something he wanted to put on another person.
“Are you sure? I’m always willing to listen if you want to talk to me.” said Darkness a little concerned for him. “I’m perfectly fine. I just really do not know you good enough and my problems are really complex, and like I said, It would just be to much of a burden for you to listen to all of my problems.” said Shadow sighing some as he was finishing the last of his fries.
“I understand. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I have my share of private matters that I wouldn’t tell you about, so I know to respect a person’s privacy.” said Darkness. Shadow looked just then surprised that she agreed with him. Most people when they notice he seems to have a lot on his mind, they press and press him trying to help him, but not this girl. She wasn’t pushing him at all. She was giving him his space and letting him do things the way he wanted to do them. This was a relief to him, because he could relax a little more with her around him.
Shadow looked down just at this moment and saw that all his food was gone which really gave him no reason to still be sticking around. He then started putting everything back into a pile on his tray looking like he was getting ready to get up and just leave Darkness sitting there.
“Are you leaving Shadow?” asked Darkness looking at him piling his stuff on his tray. “I’m finished with my meal, so there is no reason for me to hang around any longer than I need to.” said Shadow. He was starting to stand up and make his way to the garbage to get rid of his trash so he could leave. He hadn’t noticed though that Darkness though had gotten up not to far behind him seeming to almost follow him.
Shadow noticed her waiting to dump off her stuff in the trash behind him. “What are you doing? Your not finished.” said Shadow. It was true, she barely ate any of her food, only a little bit of her fries and few bites of her burger. “I’m not that hungry. I um, ate earlier.” said Darkness. Shadow wondered why she stuttered some, but just ignored it and moved aside so she could dumb her garbage into the trash.
After Darkness dumped it into the trash, she walked over to Shadow. He was already walking out the door though. He was trying to get out as fast as he could though. Darkness followed him outside. He was almost just trying to walk off, but he turned to her as he was walking. “ See ya.” said Shadow as he was about to run off into the darkness of the city and then beyond.
“Shadow wait!” yelled someone behind him. He turned to see Darkness holding her hand up to him trying to halt him from going anywhere yet. Shadow turned back to her to see what was the matter. “Yes, what is it Darkness?” asked Shadow staring at her wanting to know kind of quick from the tone of his voice. Darkness walked back over towards him then looking concerned.
“Um, Shadow, where are you staying that night at? It is late, and from the looks of the sky, I don’t think it will be nice out for long.” asked Darkness worried for where he could be staying. She was right about one thing though, the sky had many dark clouds in the sky. It was going to be storming any minute now and if Shadow was out wandering the country side, he would get soaked.
“I don’t know, but I will find a place so no need to worry about me ok.” said Shadow as he was about to turn and run off again but his arm was grabbed by Darkness. Shadow turned and looked at her wondering what she was doing. “What are you doing?” asked Shadow. Darkness looked up at him. “I know this may seem odd, but I have a guest bed at my house. If you want, you can come over to my apartment and you can sleep on it. It is a fold out couch into a bed, but it would be better for you to be on that than out here in the pouring rain and getting soaked.” said Darkness.
Shadow then looked up to the sky and also noticed all the storm clouds above him. She had a point, the last time he had been outside when it looked like this, he was cuddled in a hallow tree and was freezing half to death as the rain poured hard down outside as he was huddled there miserable. he basically had two choices, stay out here and relieve that miserable moment, or go home with this girl he really doesn’t know and sleep in a comfortable bed, something he had not done in a long while.
Shadow kind of missed sleeping in a bed. The last time he slept in one was the night before he decided to betray Eggman and go out on his own. He now was sleeping where ever he could, in trees, in bushes, or on benches, anywhere was good, but an opportunity to sleep in a bed with covers and pillow was something that was hard for him to refuse, especially considering the circumstances he was under at the moment. He then made his choice.
“Well, I usually don’t do this, but considering the circumstances, I would rather not be outside during this storm. I’ll come home with you and sleep on your couch.” said Shadow. Darkness looked happy now that she was going to be able to help him some. Shadow then turned around ready to go with her instead of just running off like he had been planning on doing.
“Do you mind walking?” asked Darkness to Shadow. Anyone that knew Shadow knew he wasn’t much of a walker, so anyone could have seen this coming. “I would rather run there instead of walking, plus it looks like it is about to start raining any second now.” said Shadow. Darkness suddenly remembered that he liked speed so she could understand why he would want to run and not walk.
“Ok, but I can’t run that fast. You may have to carry me.” said Darkness to Shadow. The thing that Shadow didn’t know though was Darkness was fibbing a bit here. Darkness could run slightly fast, but she thought “Why not since you don’t get a chance to be around someone like this every day, so why not ask.”
Shadow hearing that she was not that fast, decided he would have to carry her if she could not run as fast as him. Shadow bend down some and gently picked her up into his arms. “Tell which way to go.” said Shadow holding Darkness in his arms. Darkness gently wrapped her arms around Shadow and laid her head down onto his shoulder. She was quiet comfortable with the position she was in. “Just follow the road down some and it is the apartment with the bus stop across the street from it.” said Darkness.
Shadow didn’t know why, but he didn’t mind holding her there in his arms. It made him feel like he was really strong and she was so weak. Shadow then took off running holding Darkness close to him. Darkness held on tight to him so that she would not fall off. Shadow ran down the street at high speed. There were really no cars out at this hour, so he only flew by like one or two cars on his way to her place. He soon saw a bus stop and made a quick stop.
Darkness felt him stop but she didn’t let go though. She was kind of liking being in his embrace and felt as if she didn’t want to leave it. She knew she would, but it felt so good to her that she continued to hold onto him happily. “Um, you can let go now.” said Shadow trying to make her let go so they could go into the house.
At that moment there was a loud burst of thunder ,signaling to them that it was about to start pouring out here, kind of startled Darkness as she clung onto Shadow a little tighter obviously frightened by the thunder. Shadow could feel her fear as he still held her in his arms. He gently lowered her to the ground and gave her a pat on the back.
“Your ok, it’s only thunder. Come on, let’s go in before you get soaked by the rain.” said Shadow letting her go. Darkness smiled as Shadow said these words to her. He seemed to care at least a little bit so she willingly nodded letting him go and started walking up her four steps to her house up to her front door. She fiddled in her pockets looking for her keys and eventually found them in her back pocket and unlocked the door to her apartment and went inside.
Shadow walked into the apartment behind Darkness as she entered in front of him. Her apartment was about an average size for an apartment in the city. Her apartment was made up of four rooms like any apartment is usually made of. There was her living room, made of her couch bed, two chairs to the side of it, a coffee table in the center, and a medium size tv by the wall viewable from the couch.
There was a kitchen that was attached to the living room so you could see into the living room from the kitchen because they were basically the same room. There was a refrigerator with a freezer on top of it, a stove and oven combination, many cabinets and a small pantry for her to store things in.
There was her bedroom, which he didn’t go in but for a second on his way to the bathroom when he got in. Her bedroom had a dresser with clothes all inside of it that he didn’t see. There was a large bed with black covers and red pillows looking out from the covers at the top. It was obvious she was the decorator since her things matched her appearance, mainly her bed.
Her bathroom was not that big though. Just big enough to get what was needed done in there. There was a bathtub with no shower. There was a spray attachment that you could use, but it looked like she preferred a bath over it since it was not attached. There was a toilet, a sink and a medicine cabinet for private things that Darkness used.
After Shadow came out of the bathroom and headed back into the living room, some rain could be heard string to the hit outside the windows. It was obvious that they had made it home just in time because any later and they would be stuck out in that. Shadow was happy to be inside a nice warm home. He had not been in a regular house ever. He had only been in rooms on the Ark that he barely remembered at all and sleeping in the rooms that Eggman provided for him to sleep in, so this was a welcome change to him.
Darkness gave a small yawn as she sat on the couch seeming to wait on him to come out of her bathroom so she could get herself ready for bed herself. Shadow walked over and sat on the couch next to her. “You look tired.” said Shadow. Darkness gave another yawn as she sat there her eyes a little heavy. “I am, I had a really busy day and night, so I am exhausted” said Darkness.
“Then you should go to bed. I can pull out the bed here, you get some rest, I’ll be fine in here by myself.” said Shadow. Darkness really couldn’t argue with this, because she knew he could handle himself without her. “Ok Shadow, the blankets and pillows for the bed are in the small closet over there.” said Darkness as she got up stretching. “Goodnight Shadow.” said Darkness as she headed into her bedroom to go to sleep. “Goodnight Darkness.” said Shadow as he got up to make his own bed.
Shadow turned and removed the cushion on the couch and pulled out the bed after he moved the coffee table out of the way. It was a plain bed, but he was not picky. It was a bed and it was a lot more comfortable than a tree or the ground. Shadow walked over and opened the closet and found the covers and pillows and he walked over and placed them on the bed.
After Shadow had had a bit of struggle trying to put them onto the bed he got himself a small drink of water and walked back over to the bed and calmly got into the bed and lay down. Shadow looked really relaxed now under the covers and head laying n a pillow. He really missed this feeling and was so glad he agreed to come here, because it was really coming down outside now.
It wasn’t long though before Shadow was fast asleep on the bed. He was breathing calmly and he was really warm under his covers. The rain was continuing to pour which helped him sleep even more, because rain falling against a house late at night could put almost anyone asleep and he was no different there.
In the next room, Darkness was fast asleep under her covers happy that she was home. Suddenly though there was a very loud burst of thunder that startled her massively waking her up quickly. She was kind of afraid of thunder and really didn’t want to be alone at this moment. That was when she remembered that Shadow was in the other room. She didn’t know how he would react, but she had to ask. She quickly got up and ran out of her room and into the living room.
Darkness walked over to Shadow and gave him a gentle shake to wake him up. “Shadow, Shadow, are you awake?” asked Darkness trying to wake up. Shadow didn’t take much to wake up, but was obviously not happy about it since he woke up grumbling. “What is it Darkness?” asked Shadow.
Darkness looked at him shivering some a little scared from the thunder and lighting going on outside because of the storm. “Cccan I sleep with you, please” said Darkness looking innocently at him. Shadow looked up and saw the look on her face. It was a face of terror and timidity. Shadow really didn’t want to share but the face she was giving him he didn’t think he could resist.
Shadow finally looked up to her. “I guess you sleep here Darkness.” said Shadow scooting over to make room for her. Darkness lay down in the bed right next to Shadow and got under the covers and started sharing the pillow he was using. Darkness started smiling now, because she felt a lot safer that she was next to him. She felt more secure since there was a strong man here all next to her.
Shadow then tried to go back to sleep without saying anything else. He didn’t care if there was a girl in his bed, all he cared about was getting some sleep. Darkness though was not falling asleep though. She just kind of stared at Shadow happy that he was there with her. That was when she gave him another small shake which made him open his eyes again to look at her. “What is it now?” asked Shadow. Darkness just looked at him with her head not that far from him. “Do you want to chat some Shadow instead of sleep Shadow?’ asked Darkness.

As the two of them got there, Shadow was placed in one but before he could protest it was closed without Maria in it. Shadow began yelling for Maria to get in the pod and not do this to him. She then spoke softly to Shadow as he looked at her through the glass of the tube he was trapped in. “...For all the people who live on that planet... give them a chance to be happy. Let them live for their dreams. Shadow, I know you can do it. That's the reason that you were brought into this world. Sayonara, Shadow, the Hedgehog..." With this, Shadow was released and sent to the earth, but not before he witness one of the soldiers from GUN shoot Maria, killing her. This really hurt him and haunted him always. This was the end of his memory at the moment.
Shadow today was feeling hungry and was thinking he better go into the city to see about what he may find to eat. As soon as he entered the city, just as always, eyes immediately started staring at him cautiously. People had learned that he was not attacking people now, but they were so cautious that no one would associate with him. He barely got service at the places he went to, for most would not serve him. Simple fast food was usually the way to go since most of them did not care who it was as long as money was given.
Shadow quietly sat alone in the back of the restaurant as he ate the burger he had ordered for himself. He sat there and stared out the window, out into the darkness and lit up nightlife of the city with a small frown on his face, but not big enough for other to worry about him. It wouldn’t have mattered anyway since he was the only one in the place since it was getting close to midnight as he sat there eating. It didn’t bother him, since he had grown used to it.
Shadow did like his privacy but it sometimes seemed to be a bit too much sometimes. He hardly ever talked or did anything since he had left Eggman to go out on his own, since he no longer trusted the doctor after he had betrayed him so many times. Shadow had his own thoughts and was done with the doctor controlling him like this. When Shadow had decided he had paid a visit to the doctor that he would not soon forget.

Shadow entered Eggman’s base as if nothing was wrong. The doctor let Shadow come walking up thinking this was just Shadow returning from one of his tasks that he sent him on, and he was just in need of a rest. Unknown to Eggman though, Shadow had his won motives with he was walking inside the base. “I am tired of the doctor telling me what to do all the time. I have grown tired of him and will show him what I think of his bossing me around and telling me what to do. It is time I live my own life and not his orders. This no longer brings me happiness, thus this is not what I must have been destined to do.”, thought Shadow as he was entering the base. He had been pondering to do this for many weeks now, and after all that time he finally is going to take his stand and fight back.
Eggman was sitting going over his next scheme to conquer the world and not have Sonic interfere in it, when suddenly the door was bashed in off its bolts and thrown across the room into a pile of rubble. The doctor turned around so fast he nearly twisted his neck in such shock. “What the hell!” yelled Eggman as he saw the destruction to his door. He then was even more confused when he saw who had caused the destruction. “SHADOW!!!! WHAT’S THE MEANING OF THIS!” yelled the doctor really furious at the hedgehog at the moment. Shadow had an evil grin on his face as entered the room walking towards Eggman. As he got closer and closer, the grin started going away and was being replaced by a mad like scowl that showed the hedgehog meant serious business now. Eggman, normally calm around Shadow was actually kind of worried at what he was seeing. He tried to keep calm and at least find out what this was all about.
Shadow now stood but just a few feet from the doctor staring him down. “Doctor, I have made a choice. I am not going to listen to your bidding anymore. From now on, I do things my way and no your way. I have a purpose for being in this world and after a while of doing your bidding, I know this is not it. You may have given me shelter, but that is not what I want. I can take care of myself. So, I’m out of here, but first, I think I’ll have a little fun with your precious base.” said Shadow
Before Eggman could do anything Shadow was throwing chaos spears around destroying all of his machines. “NO! Shadow stop this at once!” yelled the doctor furious at what he was seeing happening around him. Shadow threw a chaos spear into the machine behind the doctor and Eggman was sent flying across the room and into one of his hard metal walls.
Once Shadow had finished destroying everything he saw that looked important in the room, he walked over and picked the front half of the doctor up off the ground to make him look at him. He could pick him all the way because of Eggman’s girth, but this was good enough. Eggman looked up into Shadow’s eyes that were filled with hatred for the doctor. It was obvious this may not end to pretty for him.
“Well doctor, looks like you are beaten. I knew you were truly a wimp all this time. I have been working my ass of for nothing. You are not even worthy of my time.” said Shadow. He then pulled back his fist and punched the doctor hard in the stomach and then punched him in the jaw knocking the doctor clean out with blood coming off of his lip since Shadow had split the doctor lip wide open. Shadow then released his grip on the doctor and he fell to the ground unconscious with a small patch of blood forming around the doctor’s face.
Shadow then turned and walked out where the door had used to be and left the base and was heading for the country side with no resistance at all, mostly because on his way out, Shadow destroyed all robots and weapons in his site. He was going to be sure the doctor could not retaliate for a long time. Shadow had made quite sure of that as he headed off into the distance to be on his own.
Unknown to Shadow, Eggman was waking up now. His lip was still bleeding some and there were some huge bruises on his stomach from where Shadow had punched him. “That damn hedgehog, look what he did to me and my base. It’s ruined.” said Eggman furious right now. He then looked up in shock. “Oh My God! Please don’t tell me he hurt my latest project.” said Eggman. He ran over to a raggedy looking bookshelf and removed one of the books and it started to turn. On the other side of the shelf was a huge tube with something inside of it. It was another hedgehog, just with one major difference, this one was a female.
Eggman was relieved to see that the inactive girl was not damaged at all. The same could not be said for the rest of his base though, it was totally ruined. He could either move to another base or rebuild. He was tempted to just move on, but this project may die if moved or activated before it was ready. On the bottom was a list of her progression and her name. It simply read, Nocture.
“At least Shadow missed damaging Nocture. She is only a few weeks until her growth is far enough along so that I can activate her. This may not be Shadow’s DNA used to make her, but the DNA I got will be good enough.” said Eggman. He picked up his forms and looked them over as he examined her through the tube and the liquid she floated in. “Good, good, you are growing nicely, you will be ready soon.” said Eggman as he placed the folders back and shut her back into her dark area behind the bookcase to continue developing.
“This will be my most brilliant plan ever. Using the DNA of the one they call Amy Rose, my new Project: Nocture will go out and take care of her, kill or capture makes no difference to me, but with her gone and in my possession, Sonic will have no choice but to surrender to me. This plan is perfect. Screw Shadow, he was not essential to the plan anyway. Soon, my plan will go in effect and with that hedgehog out of my way, I shall finally be able to start on my plans for global conquest and I can finally start my Eggman Empire that I have wanted for so long. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” laughed Eggman evilly as he started making robots to begin work on cleaning and repairing his base.

Shadow sat in his seat eating his burger still reflecting on how he got to this position he was in. He lived and slept where ever he could. He ate when he had the money to, and just wandered from city to city not really having anywhere to go to. He was basically all alone with no where to go looking for his place to belong.
Shadow hasn’t even had contact with Sonic or any of the others since he left Eggman’s base. This brought his spirits down even more because he couldn’t even spar or fight with the blue hedgehog. It actually made him feel livelier to occasionally have a fight with someone, but if he fought now with anyone other than the ones he knew, he might become a fugitive and he was still trying to get people to trust him, which was not going to well at all.
Just then someone entered the fast food joint. It was someone that Shadow was not familiar with. It was a female Black hedgehog. Her bangs on the top of her head were a dark red, and also the bottom half of her hair on her head had that same darkish red color to it. The rest of her body was black with occasional grey in parts. She was wearing a blue dress and skirt with a pair of long blue boots on her feet. She also had a power ring wrapped around each of her arms at her wrist. She looked familiar to someone he had seen in the past, but it was definitely not her though.
Shadow watched at the hedgehog walked over to cashier to place and order and get something to eat. She ordered a burger just like he had and she soon got her food and started to find a place to sit. That is when she finally noticed him there and actually made her way over to him. Shadow wondered why she would actually be approaching him and not running away or to eat at another corner of the restaurant, but none the less, she was heading straight for him. She was soon there at his table looking down at him.
“Um, hi there, Shadow isn’t it?” asked the girl inquiring of him. Shadow kind of fiddled one of his fries around and then looked up to her. “Yes, that would be me.” said Shadow answering her plain and simple. “Do you mind if I sit with you here? There is no one else here and I hate sitting alone.” said the girl. Shadow sometimes didn’t like strangers, because you never know what you could be getting yourself into if you start talking with just any body that walks up, but him not having a decent conversation with anyone in a few weeks, was kind of taking its toll on him. So a conversation may not be so bad.
“I guess you can sit.” said Shadow nodding to her. “Why thank you.” said the girl taking a seat across from him. “So, what brings someone like you into this place at such a late hour of the night?” asked the girl. Shadow just looked around the place now not really wanting to answer but he couldn’t help it. “I’m just here for a meal and then I’ll be on my way.” said Shadow eating some of his fries in front of him. He had already finished his burger and half of his drink, so he was almost ready to go.
“By the way, my name is Darkness, if you even wanted to know.” said Darkness smiling at Shadow as she began eating some of her burger. Shadow continued eating some more acting as if he had not heard and then looked up. “I see, Darkness huh, nice name.” said Shadow actually commenting her some. “Thank you Shadow, yours is a nice name too.” said Darkness smiling happily at him.
Shadow usually didn’t complement people like that. Maybe there was something about this girl that didn’t annoy him or something, because all was not going nuts at her sitting there with him. He then looked up again. “Why are you out so late?” asked Shadow inquiring. “I’m a bit of a night owl. I prefer to do things late, so as to avoid a lot of the rush. Plus, I like looking at the city all lit up at night.” said Darkness.
Shadow had never really paid much attention to all the lights outside in the city. He was usually only concerned with food and nothing else, so he could be in and out of the city as quickly as possible. “I see, at least you have a good excuse, better than mine would ever be.” said Shadow. Darkness seemed confused at this as she continued eating. “You seem a little depressed about something Shadow. You care to talk about it?” asked Darkness taking a sip of her drink.
Shadow was not going to tell her the truth about everything, especially his visions or memories, because people always thought of him as insane when he told anyone about what was going through his mind. Some things were just better left unsaid. “Yes, I do have things on my mind, but I would rather not mention them and burden you with my problems.” said Shadow. He hated saying his feelings so much. They hurt him and burdening someone else with them was not something he wanted to put on another person.
“Are you sure? I’m always willing to listen if you want to talk to me.” said Darkness a little concerned for him. “I’m perfectly fine. I just really do not know you good enough and my problems are really complex, and like I said, It would just be to much of a burden for you to listen to all of my problems.” said Shadow sighing some as he was finishing the last of his fries.
“I understand. You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to. I have my share of private matters that I wouldn’t tell you about, so I know to respect a person’s privacy.” said Darkness. Shadow looked just then surprised that she agreed with him. Most people when they notice he seems to have a lot on his mind, they press and press him trying to help him, but not this girl. She wasn’t pushing him at all. She was giving him his space and letting him do things the way he wanted to do them. This was a relief to him, because he could relax a little more with her around him.
Shadow looked down just at this moment and saw that all his food was gone which really gave him no reason to still be sticking around. He then started putting everything back into a pile on his tray looking like he was getting ready to get up and just leave Darkness sitting there.
“Are you leaving Shadow?” asked Darkness looking at him piling his stuff on his tray. “I’m finished with my meal, so there is no reason for me to hang around any longer than I need to.” said Shadow. He was starting to stand up and make his way to the garbage to get rid of his trash so he could leave. He hadn’t noticed though that Darkness though had gotten up not to far behind him seeming to almost follow him.
Shadow noticed her waiting to dump off her stuff in the trash behind him. “What are you doing? Your not finished.” said Shadow. It was true, she barely ate any of her food, only a little bit of her fries and few bites of her burger. “I’m not that hungry. I um, ate earlier.” said Darkness. Shadow wondered why she stuttered some, but just ignored it and moved aside so she could dumb her garbage into the trash.
After Darkness dumped it into the trash, she walked over to Shadow. He was already walking out the door though. He was trying to get out as fast as he could though. Darkness followed him outside. He was almost just trying to walk off, but he turned to her as he was walking. “ See ya.” said Shadow as he was about to run off into the darkness of the city and then beyond.
“Shadow wait!” yelled someone behind him. He turned to see Darkness holding her hand up to him trying to halt him from going anywhere yet. Shadow turned back to her to see what was the matter. “Yes, what is it Darkness?” asked Shadow staring at her wanting to know kind of quick from the tone of his voice. Darkness walked back over towards him then looking concerned.
“Um, Shadow, where are you staying that night at? It is late, and from the looks of the sky, I don’t think it will be nice out for long.” asked Darkness worried for where he could be staying. She was right about one thing though, the sky had many dark clouds in the sky. It was going to be storming any minute now and if Shadow was out wandering the country side, he would get soaked.
“I don’t know, but I will find a place so no need to worry about me ok.” said Shadow as he was about to turn and run off again but his arm was grabbed by Darkness. Shadow turned and looked at her wondering what she was doing. “What are you doing?” asked Shadow. Darkness looked up at him. “I know this may seem odd, but I have a guest bed at my house. If you want, you can come over to my apartment and you can sleep on it. It is a fold out couch into a bed, but it would be better for you to be on that than out here in the pouring rain and getting soaked.” said Darkness.
Shadow then looked up to the sky and also noticed all the storm clouds above him. She had a point, the last time he had been outside when it looked like this, he was cuddled in a hallow tree and was freezing half to death as the rain poured hard down outside as he was huddled there miserable. he basically had two choices, stay out here and relieve that miserable moment, or go home with this girl he really doesn’t know and sleep in a comfortable bed, something he had not done in a long while.
Shadow kind of missed sleeping in a bed. The last time he slept in one was the night before he decided to betray Eggman and go out on his own. He now was sleeping where ever he could, in trees, in bushes, or on benches, anywhere was good, but an opportunity to sleep in a bed with covers and pillow was something that was hard for him to refuse, especially considering the circumstances he was under at the moment. He then made his choice.
“Well, I usually don’t do this, but considering the circumstances, I would rather not be outside during this storm. I’ll come home with you and sleep on your couch.” said Shadow. Darkness looked happy now that she was going to be able to help him some. Shadow then turned around ready to go with her instead of just running off like he had been planning on doing.
“Do you mind walking?” asked Darkness to Shadow. Anyone that knew Shadow knew he wasn’t much of a walker, so anyone could have seen this coming. “I would rather run there instead of walking, plus it looks like it is about to start raining any second now.” said Shadow. Darkness suddenly remembered that he liked speed so she could understand why he would want to run and not walk.
“Ok, but I can’t run that fast. You may have to carry me.” said Darkness to Shadow. The thing that Shadow didn’t know though was Darkness was fibbing a bit here. Darkness could run slightly fast, but she thought “Why not since you don’t get a chance to be around someone like this every day, so why not ask.”
Shadow hearing that she was not that fast, decided he would have to carry her if she could not run as fast as him. Shadow bend down some and gently picked her up into his arms. “Tell which way to go.” said Shadow holding Darkness in his arms. Darkness gently wrapped her arms around Shadow and laid her head down onto his shoulder. She was quiet comfortable with the position she was in. “Just follow the road down some and it is the apartment with the bus stop across the street from it.” said Darkness.
Shadow didn’t know why, but he didn’t mind holding her there in his arms. It made him feel like he was really strong and she was so weak. Shadow then took off running holding Darkness close to him. Darkness held on tight to him so that she would not fall off. Shadow ran down the street at high speed. There were really no cars out at this hour, so he only flew by like one or two cars on his way to her place. He soon saw a bus stop and made a quick stop.
Darkness felt him stop but she didn’t let go though. She was kind of liking being in his embrace and felt as if she didn’t want to leave it. She knew she would, but it felt so good to her that she continued to hold onto him happily. “Um, you can let go now.” said Shadow trying to make her let go so they could go into the house.
At that moment there was a loud burst of thunder ,signaling to them that it was about to start pouring out here, kind of startled Darkness as she clung onto Shadow a little tighter obviously frightened by the thunder. Shadow could feel her fear as he still held her in his arms. He gently lowered her to the ground and gave her a pat on the back.
“Your ok, it’s only thunder. Come on, let’s go in before you get soaked by the rain.” said Shadow letting her go. Darkness smiled as Shadow said these words to her. He seemed to care at least a little bit so she willingly nodded letting him go and started walking up her four steps to her house up to her front door. She fiddled in her pockets looking for her keys and eventually found them in her back pocket and unlocked the door to her apartment and went inside.
Shadow walked into the apartment behind Darkness as she entered in front of him. Her apartment was about an average size for an apartment in the city. Her apartment was made up of four rooms like any apartment is usually made of. There was her living room, made of her couch bed, two chairs to the side of it, a coffee table in the center, and a medium size tv by the wall viewable from the couch.
There was a kitchen that was attached to the living room so you could see into the living room from the kitchen because they were basically the same room. There was a refrigerator with a freezer on top of it, a stove and oven combination, many cabinets and a small pantry for her to store things in.
There was her bedroom, which he didn’t go in but for a second on his way to the bathroom when he got in. Her bedroom had a dresser with clothes all inside of it that he didn’t see. There was a large bed with black covers and red pillows looking out from the covers at the top. It was obvious she was the decorator since her things matched her appearance, mainly her bed.
Her bathroom was not that big though. Just big enough to get what was needed done in there. There was a bathtub with no shower. There was a spray attachment that you could use, but it looked like she preferred a bath over it since it was not attached. There was a toilet, a sink and a medicine cabinet for private things that Darkness used.
After Shadow came out of the bathroom and headed back into the living room, some rain could be heard string to the hit outside the windows. It was obvious that they had made it home just in time because any later and they would be stuck out in that. Shadow was happy to be inside a nice warm home. He had not been in a regular house ever. He had only been in rooms on the Ark that he barely remembered at all and sleeping in the rooms that Eggman provided for him to sleep in, so this was a welcome change to him.
Darkness gave a small yawn as she sat on the couch seeming to wait on him to come out of her bathroom so she could get herself ready for bed herself. Shadow walked over and sat on the couch next to her. “You look tired.” said Shadow. Darkness gave another yawn as she sat there her eyes a little heavy. “I am, I had a really busy day and night, so I am exhausted” said Darkness.
“Then you should go to bed. I can pull out the bed here, you get some rest, I’ll be fine in here by myself.” said Shadow. Darkness really couldn’t argue with this, because she knew he could handle himself without her. “Ok Shadow, the blankets and pillows for the bed are in the small closet over there.” said Darkness as she got up stretching. “Goodnight Shadow.” said Darkness as she headed into her bedroom to go to sleep. “Goodnight Darkness.” said Shadow as he got up to make his own bed.
Shadow turned and removed the cushion on the couch and pulled out the bed after he moved the coffee table out of the way. It was a plain bed, but he was not picky. It was a bed and it was a lot more comfortable than a tree or the ground. Shadow walked over and opened the closet and found the covers and pillows and he walked over and placed them on the bed.
After Shadow had had a bit of struggle trying to put them onto the bed he got himself a small drink of water and walked back over to the bed and calmly got into the bed and lay down. Shadow looked really relaxed now under the covers and head laying n a pillow. He really missed this feeling and was so glad he agreed to come here, because it was really coming down outside now.
It wasn’t long though before Shadow was fast asleep on the bed. He was breathing calmly and he was really warm under his covers. The rain was continuing to pour which helped him sleep even more, because rain falling against a house late at night could put almost anyone asleep and he was no different there.
In the next room, Darkness was fast asleep under her covers happy that she was home. Suddenly though there was a very loud burst of thunder that startled her massively waking her up quickly. She was kind of afraid of thunder and really didn’t want to be alone at this moment. That was when she remembered that Shadow was in the other room. She didn’t know how he would react, but she had to ask. She quickly got up and ran out of her room and into the living room.
Darkness walked over to Shadow and gave him a gentle shake to wake him up. “Shadow, Shadow, are you awake?” asked Darkness trying to wake up. Shadow didn’t take much to wake up, but was obviously not happy about it since he woke up grumbling. “What is it Darkness?” asked Shadow.
Darkness looked at him shivering some a little scared from the thunder and lighting going on outside because of the storm. “Cccan I sleep with you, please” said Darkness looking innocently at him. Shadow looked up and saw the look on her face. It was a face of terror and timidity. Shadow really didn’t want to share but the face she was giving him he didn’t think he could resist.
Shadow finally looked up to her. “I guess you sleep here Darkness.” said Shadow scooting over to make room for her. Darkness lay down in the bed right next to Shadow and got under the covers and started sharing the pillow he was using. Darkness started smiling now, because she felt a lot safer that she was next to him. She felt more secure since there was a strong man here all next to her.
Shadow then tried to go back to sleep without saying anything else. He didn’t care if there was a girl in his bed, all he cared about was getting some sleep. Darkness though was not falling asleep though. She just kind of stared at Shadow happy that he was there with her. That was when she gave him another small shake which made him open his eyes again to look at her. “What is it now?” asked Shadow. Darkness just looked at him with her head not that far from him. “Do you want to chat some Shadow instead of sleep Shadow?’ asked Darkness.
