Like The Rain

Sort of fluffy, sort of serious.

Once again, RVB ain't mine, and neither is the song (it's Clint Black's "Like The Rain")
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Church sat on top of the blue base, back to a wall, under an overhang, just watching the first rain in a long time soak everything in the canyon. He allowed his mind to wander aimlessly, and it drifted back to the first night Caboose had come to his room...

I never liked the rain until I walked through it with you
Every thunder cloud that came was one more I might not get through
On the darkest day there's always light and now I see it too
But I never liked the rain until I walked through it with you

There was a knock at the door, just something more interrupting Church's attempts to read. Between the thunder and the incessant ruckus from the other room, where Tucker and Tex were playing some sort of game, Church had read only half a page. He snarled at whoever it was that there had better be a good reason for the interruption, lest he deal that person great bodily harm. The door opened, revealing a very frightened Caboose.

"What is it, rookie?" Church inquired.

"Church, I'm scared," admitted Caboose.

"Of what?! There's nothing here to be scared OF!"

"Storms scare me, Church."

"So, go out with Tex and Tucker. I'm sure they'll let you join their game, or whatever they're doing," suggested Church.

"They'll laugh at me, Church. They're not nice to me like you're nice to me. You're my best friend, and I know you won't laugh at me," Caboose said, quietly.

At this, Church paused to think. Hmmm, he really IS scared. he mused. Maybe I SHOULD let him stay in here. After all, he probably only wants company, and he'll probably be out like a light after he curls up on the other bunk.

"Alright, Caboose. You can stay in here with me," said Church. At the precise moment he finished his sentence, a flash of lightning split the sky, and thunder rumbled through the canyon.

With a small shriek, Caboose fairly dove onto the bunk, almost squishing Church in the process. He burrowed his head under the pillows, and commenced whimpering.

"Come on, rookie, it's not that bad." Oh God, he's touching me! Church's brain howled, every sense going on high alert to take in more of the moment.

With that, the electricity in the building went out, plunging the room into darkness.

Oh shit. It just got worse. Church thought.

"YEEK! It's dark, it's raining, there's thunder, and it's SCARY!" Caboose squealed.

Feeling amidst the covers for Caboose's hand and grabbing it, Church tried to get Caboose's attention. "Caboose! It's okay, I'm right here!"

Caboose threw his arms around Church, making sure Church wouldn't leave him. Oh man, he is REALLY touching me! Church's mind squawked. Rolling over onto his back, Church pulled Caboose on top of him, letting the frightened rookie's head rest on his chest, one of his arms tight around Caboose's waist, the other hand tracing lazy circles on his back, trying to calm him down. Hmm...I could get used to this Church thought.

Caboose gradually calmed down, snuggling closer to Church. "Church?" Caboose asked, quietly.

"Yes, Caboose?"

"It's not so scary with you here."

Church lightly kissed Caboose's forehead. "Good. Go to sleep, rookie."

I hear it falling in the night and filling up my mind
All the heaven's rivers come to light and I see it all unwind
I hear it talking through the trees and on the window pane
And when I hear it I just can't believe I never liked the rain

The next morning, Church and Caboose awoke laying together, just the same as when they had fallen asleep. It took Church's mind a moment to realize that this wasn't a dream, that he was laying in his bed with his arms around Caboose. The two of them could still hear the faint patter of rain on the roof, but it was nothing compared to the raging storm of the previous night.

"Church?" Caboose asked, tentatively.

"Yes, Caboose?"

"If being scared of storms means I can come in here and sleep with you, I think I like storms now," Caboose blurted out.

"Caboose, that made almost no sense. But, I know what you mean," Church said.

Like the rain, I have fallen for you and I know just why you
Liked the rain, always calling for you I'm falling for you now
Just like the rain

"Ummm, Church? You enjoyed this too, right?"

"Of course, rookie. Now, zip it, and let's go back to sleep. It's still way too early to be up."

Caboose obligingly shut up and rolled over on his side, his back to Church. Church pressed his body against Caboose's broad, warm back, and just lay there, thinking. I wonder if he's catching on...

Caboose's last thought before he fell asleep again was I wonder if Church knows I like him. I think he likes me. He liked last night...

When the cloud is rolling over thunder striking me
It's as bright as lightning and I wonder why I couldn't see
That it's always good and when the flood is gone we still remain
Guess I've known all along I just belong here with you falling

A flash of lightning raced across the sky, scattering thunder in its wake, and bringing Church out of his reverie for a moment. When he let his brain begin to wander again, it brought forth a smattering of images: Caboose, himself, moaning, panting, begging, touching...and it all felt so right. If you know you two belong together, why are you so scared to admit it to anyone but him? Church thought to himself.

Like the rain, I have fallen for you and I know just why you
Liked the rain, always calling for you, I'm falling for you now
Just like the rain, I have fallen for you
I'm falling for you now just like the rain

The door just down the wall from Church opened, once again distracting him from his thoughts. He tried his best to ignore it, but found it impossible when Caboose sat down next to him. They sat in silence for a moment, before Church spoke.

"Caboose, I have something to tell you."

"I have something to tell you, too, Church. You first, though."

"Alright, rookie. I can't think of any better way to say this than straight up: I think I'm in love with you," Church stated.

"Church, that's exactly what I was going to tell you, too!" Caboose bubbled.

And when the night falls on our better days
And we're looking to the sky
For the winds to take us high above the plains
I know that we'll find better ways to look into the eye
Of the storms that will be calling
Forever we'll be falling

Neither of them spoke for a moment, letting the truth sink in. Church grabbed Caboose, pulling him across his lap, and leaning in for a long, slow kiss. When they parted, Church smirked, "I could get used to this."

Like the rain, I have fallen for you, and I know just why you
Like the rain, always calling for you, I'm falling for you now just
Like the rain, I have fallen for you and I know just why you
Like the rain, always calling for you, I'm falling for you now just
Like the rain...
