Ridin' The Storm Out
Alright, this was the first piece of RVB fic I ever wrote, so go easy on me :-P
RVB isn't mine, and neither is the song (the song happens to be Y&T's "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark")

Outside the cave, the storm still howled mightily, dumping the first buckets of rain to hit the canyon in a long, long time. Inside the cave, Church paced back and forth, questioning just how long the damned storm could last, and how long he'd be confined in this small space with the ever-irritating-but-well-meaning Caboose.
Get a grip, Church. It could be worse. It's only gonna be a couple of hours, right? You can deal with him. Just tell him to shut up. Church thought to himself, pausing to study the conditions outside.
The sun, obscured behind clouds and already dimmed, was rapidly approaching the horizon on its descent, and it was clear that neither of them was going anywhere anytime soon. The interior of the cave was growing dark rapidly, and the almost-constant stream of Caboose's chatter that had formed the background soundtrack of Church's thoughts grew slower in tandem with it, and was now faltering and pausing. Church looked over at the faint outline that was Caboose. He could see that the goofy rookie had removed his helmet and armor, apparently ready to settle in for the duration.
"What's the matter, rookie? Afraid of the dark?" Church teased.
Caboose sniffled, almost imperceptibly, and lied convincingly "no."
Church skirted the pile of his own armor and walked towards Caboose. Reaching the rookie's feet, Church stopped and knelt down. Oh man, why am I doing this? He drives me crazy, so why am I being so nice?! Church questioned in his own brain.
"Caboose?" Church inquired softly, placing a hand on the rookie's knee. Caboose flinched at the touch initially, but relaxed after a moment, after remembering that Church was his best friend, and it was only Church touching him - nothing bad.
"Church? When can we go back to the base?" Caboose asked, trying to hide the tremor in his voice, but failing.
Uh oh. Bad signs. How can I word this so he doesn't freak out on me? mused Church.
"Well, rookie, whenever the storm lets up, and it's light enough out. Definitely not until tomorrow morning at the earliest," Church stated.
"Oh," said Caboose, sounding deflated.
Church moved in the darkness, sitting down next to Caboose. "Let me ask you something," he began.
"Like what, Church?"
"Like...are you afraid of the dark?" Church asked, hesitantly. Oh geez. Way to go, Church. Now you're thinking about it too. Don't freak out, there's nothing else in here but Caboose. The thoughts rattled rapidly through Church's mind.
"Well, Church, since you're my best friend and won't tell anybody and won't make fun of me because you're nice....yes. I am afraid of the dark. And storms scare me too," Caboose confessed. "Are you scared of the dark too, Church?"
Church sat silently for a moment, trying to regain control of his racing heart and mind. Be strong, Church. Maybe helping him out will help you out. Church's mind suggested. "Nope, not since I was a kid," he fibbed. Hey, if I can convince him, maybe I can convince myself...
"Oh. Umm...Church? It's really dark in here. And really, really scary," Caboose whimpered.
"Well, you know what my mom used to do for me when I was scared at night as a kid?" Church asked.
"What did she do for you?"
"She used to hold me across her lap, like this-" Church softly slid one arm under Caboose's legs, and the other around his back, shifting him to lay across his lap, leaning back against Church's arm, his head resting comfortably on Church's shoulder. Caboose mentally questioned these actions for a moment, but his need for security and comfort overrode those questions. "And she'd sing to me until I fell asleep," Church continued.
"That sounds nice."
"There was one song in particular that she sang to me - let's see if I remember it all," said Church. He thought for a moment, then began to sing.
In the dark - there ain't no distractions
Take it off - the mask won't let you see
Ain't lettin' up till you unleash all your emotions
I'll be here waiting
Got love, if you want it
Aw, we'll take it as it comes
Touch by touch - little by little
I'll unchain your heart
Don't be afraid of the dark
Take my hand - little by little
We'll break down these walls
Don't be afraid of the dark
In the light - you hide what you're feeling
In your eyes - you wanna let me know
Rise above and old wounds will start healing
I'll be here waiting
Got love, if you want it
We'll take it as it comes
Touch by touch - little by little
I'll unchain your heart
Don't be afraid of the dark
Take my hand - little by little
We'll break down these walls
Don't be afraid of the dark
From my hand - to your heart
Love is what we make it - ready
We'll feel our way
Don't need words to say
Touch by touch - little by little
I'll unchain your heart
Don't be afraid of the dark
Take my hand - little by little
We'll break down these walls
Don't be afraid of the dark...
Caboose steadily relaxed as Church's song went on, and by the last chorus, he was as good as asleep - just like Church's arm, from bearing the gradually heavier weight of Caboose's relaxing body. Church shifted the sleeping rookie to lay on his side, and curled up behind him, feeling the warmth radiating from the broad back he was pressed up against. One of Church's arms formed a makeshift pillow for the two of them, and the other wrapped around Caboose's ribs, bent at the elbow so his hand rested on Caboose's chest, feeling his steady heartbeat.
You drive me crazy, you rookie fucktard, you Church thought, with affection. But that's because I love you.
As he finally relaxed, and sleep became possible, Church quietly repeated the chorus of the song, and lightly kissed Caboose's cheek, smiling happily when he snuggled closer, wanting Church to hold him tighter. Together, they slept, safe and warm, waiting out the storm.
