Rina looked ahead. The road went uphill from there, and the sky was grey with clouds and mist. The surroundings were alive with bird songs. The North Sparrow Pass--they will have to get through it to get to the country of Highland. Earlier in Ryube village, where she, her sister Eilie, and their sworn brother Bolgan had held a performance, she caught word that the North Sparrow Pass had been closed due to rumours of a ‘mist monster’ that has taken residence somewhere along the road.
She looked at her companions. They were a party of five. Usually she was just with Eilie and Bolgan, but now they travel together with two young men they met in Ryube village. They say they were soldiers from the Highland youth brigade, which had just escaped capture by mercenaries affiliated with the Jowston City-States. One of them, who were walking alongside her carrying a staff, had a charming face and long blond hair, with an air of nobility in his stance. Back in Ryube, he introduced himself as Jowy. The other one was shorter than Jowy, with dark hair and--this was what Eilie said before--a cute face. The boy, named Riou, carried a pair of tonfa and he was of the silent type--he never said much during the time they walked together. He was walking a few paces behind them, alongside Eilie and Bolgan; the three were munching watermelon slices. The watermelon had been used in Eilie’s knife-throwing performance before. This stunt brought together the circus siblings with the two lads. Eilie picked Riou from the crowd because she thought he has the right height and a cute face--well, the second reason might not be that important?
Rina took a second glance at Riou, and then to Eilie’s unusual gaze towards the boy, and she knew there was something going on in her little sister’s mind. Eilie noticed Rina’s interest. Finished with her watermelon slice, she tossed the rind away and immediately enquired, “What is it, sis? Something on my face?”
“Hmm… I just noticed that you’ve been seriously watching something… or *someone*…”
“Sis! What are you talking about!?” Eilie blurted, blushing. Rina laughed. Eilie was just so predictable, she thought.
“Soldiers ahead,” Jowy’s observation brought Rina’s attention back to the road.

“Up ahead is the Highland Border. There's also a rumour that a Mist Monster lives there. No one is permitted to enter by order of Mayor Anabelle of Muse. Please go back the way you came.”
Two State soldiers were staffing a checkpoint at the entrance of the North Sparrow Post. Upon seeing the party of five, they immediately got into their way, as their orders were to prevent anyone from entering the North Sparrow Pass, for safety reasons. They had just explained why the party of five cannot continue.
"We have to get back... I mean we have to go to Highland," Jowy tried to reason.
"Sorry, we've got our orders," one of the soldiers, who seem to be of the lower rank from the two, answered.
Eilie and Bolgan stepped forward. Eilie tried to look intimidating by pulling out one of her throwing knives and played around with it.
"C'mon can't you just bend the rules this once?" Eilie asked. The soldier seemed a bit surprised, and stepped back.
"Sorry, I can't do that," he said, grasping his spear as if expecting an attack.
“Pleeeaaase,” Bolgan pleaded in a childish tone, yet his enormous figure made the guard consider him more of a threat than the girl with the knife.
The air was cold but Rina could sense the tension. Eilie and Bolgan’s idea of getting through the soldiers might involve violence, and even Jowy and Riou seem to be prepared to take action against the two soldiers. It’s too early to be fighting, Rina thought. There would be cutrabbits and wolves along the Pass, and they might have to fight the Mist Monster if it were actually there. One cannot reason with monsters and other random enemies, but one can always reason with humans, Rina believed. And we CAN persuade these soldiers…
Rina smiled and walked to the other soldier, the one with the higher rank.
“Umm… Mr. Captain… Could we have a little talk?...” Rina whispered in a seductive tone. The captain looked at her, confused. “Huh?”
“Come over here with me…” Rina grabbed the captain’s arm and pulled him away, leading him to the back of the soldiers’ post, out of sight.
The other soldier and the four travellers still stare at each other tensely, but they were also baffled by Rina’s actions.
“What’s she doing?” Jowy asked.
“Beats me?” Eilie shrugged.
“Rina talk to Mr.Soldier?” Bolgan replied.
Riou did not say a thing as usual.

Rina murmured some incantations and kissed the ring on her finger. At times like these, she would need some of her magical skills. Fortune telling was not the only trick her late mother had taught her. She also taught her the art of hypnotism. Now would be a good time to practice it.
“Mr. Captain, could you look at my eyes?” Rina said.
“…” The captain did as the girl said, and as his eyes met the girl’s enchanted gaze, he was hers.

The captain was not sure why he let himself be dragged around by this girl in the first place. However, he was not bothered by that thought. He did not know why, but he just felt… so relaxed. For some reason he felt calm after he saw the girl’s eyes.

Rina, Eilie, Bolgan, Jowy and Riou walked past the soldiers. The captain’s eye met Rina’s for the last time, and she whispered a thank you to him. The other soldier, who had some guesses of what might have happened before, grumbled, “Why only the captain?”

After walking some distance from the checkpoint, Jowy cannot hold his curiosity and he asked Rina, "Rina, what did you do to him?"

It’s short but fun to write, and I am baffled myself by the lack of fanfics that tried to fill in the details of what happened in that scene with Rina and the State Soldier, so this one’s my rendition of it. Suikoden II is not that well known but I say it’s still the best in the Suikoden series [we’ve yet to see Suikoden 5, that is]. There are lots of characters and fiction potential in the series, and I hope people could write more quality fics for the series.
