Taking Love for Granted
My first story got deleted. I bet it was that pathetic flamer on my friend's fanfiction. Oh well. Anyway, here's another story I've worked on. Inspired mainly by VergilSparda666.
Disclaimer: I make no claims to Dante or Vergil, for they belong to history, but these belong to Capcom's Devil May Cry series. I make no claims to Rune Sparda, for he belongs to VergilSparda666's Survivor fanfiction. I asked for permission of course. The only person I claim are the little minor characters and Allison.
Er... It was supposed to be a PG-13 story... Only.. Fanfiction.net is fucked up with me. Some stupid idiot reported me, and I'm stuck without being able to post for a bunch of days. And I made another account, and I can't post for a few days because I'm a newbie... So just because this is being posted here, perhaps I'll write one more chapter with *koffkoff* something in it, ya know? Maybe I'll ask Verge-kun to write it, I suck with these things. ::sweatdrop::
The twins had gotten into another verbal spar. This time it revolved around Dante’s practically daily drunkenness, a cue pole, and Vergil’s ass. What are we talking about? Put the pieces together, it’s really just simple mathematics. Vergil had taken Yamato and his motorcycle and left. Dante listened to the motor fading into the distance as he gulped down some more of the beer in his hands.
“Ah, what the hell. He’ll come running back soon,” and Dante dismissed the current situation from his mind and went back to his drinking, despite the fact that he was already beyond ‘just’ drunk.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The next day, Dante awoke at one in the afternoon at his desk with a throbbing headache. Who wouldn’t with that much to drink, right? He stood and stretched, yawning, then stepped toward the door to open shop. He unlocked the double doors and turned around to see a figure with a black leather trench coat sitting on his beat up sofa. Dante almost jumped, almost.
“How the hell did you get in here, kid?… Again?”
The figure was wearing a crimson dress shirt with a black tank top below that layer and baggy black pants adorned with metal pieces and multiple straps and belts running all over the place. You’d be surprised if people like these didn’t trip while walking.
“Good afternoon to you too, Dan. Finally wakey wakey, I see?” Her name was Allison. She was some teen his nephew had made friends with in a party that she had crashed. Evidence leads to her being a half-breed with the ability of a shadow demon, though a little different, for she had a tendency of getting pass locked doors and plain appearing out of nowhere. However, that is of no importance.
“Yeah, good afternoon, babe.”
“I take babe as an offense, don’t use that with me if you could prevent it,” she said. She was only 14, but was very touchy about these kind of subjects, “So where’s Verge?”
“I don’t know, might be upstairs. He went out yesterday night.”
“Oh, why? Work?”
“I don’t know, but he did get pissed at me. I think….”
“AGAIN?! Geez, Dante, you can’t expect him to come back EVERY time you do something wrong!”
“He said he’d never leave me again.”
Allison shook her head to the sides and smacked a palm over her forehead, “Once a Dante, always an idiot…. Just because he told you that doesn’t mean you can just take it for granted, Dante!”
Dante sighed and went into the bathroom, leaving the door open. Allison followed and leaned against the door frame, watching as Dante turned on the cold tap and splashed cold water on his face, wetting his bare chest a little. He wet his hair as well, then turned around a grabbed a towel off one of the racks. He stepped pass Allison while drying off.
Now had Allison been a normal girl, her eyes would have literally been bulging out of her head and she would have had drool dripping down pass gaping jaws. But that was it, she wasn’t normal. Neither was she bi or lesbian. One could almost say she had an asexual personality.
Dante slumped into the sofa and Allison sat at the opposite side, resting her combat boots on the wooden table place in front of the sofa. With crossed arms, she watched until Dante stopped drying himself.
Dante sighed again, “You’re right. I shouldn’t take it for granted. I think yesterday night, I tried to shove a cue pole up Verge’s --”
“YEAH! OKAY! Point taken,” Allison interrupted before Dante could finish. She had nothing against homosexuals. She supported them in fact, and enjoyed watching lovebirds of all kinds. She knew she could never be one. She always tried to help people with their problems. Not that she had a license in physiology or anything.
“I should…. go look for him,” and the phone rung. Dante picked it up, “Devil May Cry…. No, you can kiss your ass goodbye, I have something more than your life to attend to…. NOOOOO--”
Allison snatched the phone from his hands while rolling her eyes, “I’m sorry, our No. 1.… or No. 2 hunter,” she snickered as Dante growled. She continued, “has something important to do, I’ll be taking this job, what is our addr--”
“Are you fucking crazy kid!? You’re what, 14?!”
“Ah shut up, I have an enchanted sword, and Rune’s always there to back me up…. Well, if he ain’t doing nothing with that pretty-boy friend of his anyway,” and she went back to taking the job.
“Alright, thanks kid,” Dante packed Rebellion and watched as Allison left. He ran outside, wondering how Allison was going to get all the way uptown before the customer ended up dead. To his surprise again, she was nowhere in sight. Dante blinked blankly, then made his way over to his motorcycle and sped off in search for his twin, after closing his shop again.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The demons to be taken care of were a pair of Shadows. Allison almost lost because she couldn’t do much damage to them, being she wasn’t age legal to handle or keep a firearm and all. All she had was that big sword of hers. Rune came by a while later coincidentally with the twin guns Dante had recently made for him and all was well.
Allison and Rune returned to Devil May Cry after they collected their pay. Dante came home two days later. He came through the door to Rune and Allison tearing at each other’s throats. However, all he could say was, “Has Verge come back?”
Allison and Rune plopped down on the sofa and said in unison, “Nope.”
Dante nodded and threw his coat on his desk, then sat behind it. Rune and Allison shrugged to each other.
“I take it then that you didn’t find Vergil?” Allison asked.
“OF COURSE, WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU THINK?!” Dante yelled while rising from his seat. Allison and Rune grew silent. Dante swiped a palm through his hair. He sat back down and stayed silent for a while as well. Then he proceeded to apologize, “I’m sorry guys, I’m just….”
“Yeah, I understand,” Rune said. He had been informed about Vergil and Dante’s latest fight.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Rune went back to college three days later. Vergil hadn’t returned for the next two months. Dante was growing lonesome and restless. Allison dropped by everyday to check on Dante. Yes, he’s the age when one could take care of themselves, but as usual, Dante happens to be exceptionally stupid.
Allison entered Devil May Cry to find it locked and empty,. She somehow got inside without having to unlock or break anything and began to search the whole Devil May Cry building, which wasn’t much. The library could only be locked from the outside, all the other rooms including bedroom, guestroom, and bathroom were empty.
‘A mission,’ Allison thought and picked up the phone. She searched the Caller ID for the last caller and dialed the number. Some guy picked up, sounding scared and frantic.
“H-hello? I’m not in the situation to talk now. P-p-please c-call back in a w-while.”
“Pay attention, human! This is Devil May Cry. How’s the hired mercenary doing?”
“Nothing, h-he’s just standing there taking hits.”
“Shit…. Where is the battle site? I’m sending some reinforcements!”
Allison arrived a few minutes later. The human was right. Just standing there and taking hits from the three Hell Vanguards was Dante. Allison ran forward and parried a Vanguard’s scythe that was heading for Dante, then kicked it away. She set the large sword down.
“Dante Sparda, what the fuck do you think you’re doing?! That man hired you to kill, not to BE killed!” Allison yelled.
Dante merely shoved her to the side roughly, making Allison slide unpleasantly along the ground as a scythe sent him flying and landing on his back after skidding across ground. Allison got up and ran over.
“Get the hell off of your ass, Dante! This ain’t no time to be fooling around! Three Vanguards, Dan, THREE! Not one, not two, but three!”
Dante just lay there as a Vanguard disappeared, “It’s been almost two months…. He’s not coming back.”
“Let’s talk about this LATER!” Allison yelled, trying to make Dante move. A Vanguard popped out from behind her and she dodged, missing the rotating scythe by less than an inch.
“I can’t even blame him for leaving this time. My fault…. All my doing….”
“Agh, get up, damnit!”
“No…. There’s no reason to.”
A Vanguard appeared above Dante and headed toward him. Allison shielded his body with her own and the scythe imbedded into her abdomen from behind before tearing away.
“D-damnit… Dante, you worthless bastard!” Allison said, royally pissed that the jacket she had worked so hard for now donned a gash in the back. Dante lay emotionless still.
“If it weren’t for Vergil, I’d just let you die! You’re pathetic, Dante! You don’t even deserve death, it’s too good for you. You create a problem, and now you try to run from it by quitting?! PITIFUL! Now get the fuck up and help me, or forever live or die with this guilt!”
Allison’s words were indeed hard, but it did get Dante to draw his twin guns and dispose of the Vanguards. Dante stuck his handguns back into their holsters without his trademark twirling. A moment of silence passed by until Allison decided to break it.
“Dante?..”
“You’re right, Allison. I’m beyond worthless,” and with a swish of his coat, Dante turned to leave for Devil May Cry. Allison collected the bounty from the frightened man and followed Dante silently back.
When they reached Devil May Cry, Allison handed Dante the check.
“Keep it. For your troubles. Go get yourself a new jacket. After all, you were the one complaining about how it was my fault for the destruction of your last.”
“Dude, as much as I’d love to get a new trench coat, I seriously doubt it’d cost $10,000.”
“You never know. Besides…. I need to cut back on my drinking. Being money-less helps.”
“Well, not really. Beer is not at all expensive in your terms.”
“Very true, that.”
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The phone rung, shattering silence.
“Devil May Cry…. Yeah alright, I’ll be right there,” Dante put the phone down, but it rung again immediately. The same report, but by a different person.
“Okay, okay, I got it,” Dante flipped the phone and let it land neatly on the receiver. Allison and Rune had constantly complained about how corny it looked, but he did it anyway. The phone rung again. With an exasperated sigh, he gathered his weapons, ignored the phone, and left.
Another month had passed by without Vergil in his life. Dante’s drinking habit was as bad as ever. He was starting to lose hope on Vergil ever returning, but Allison’s rant kept him going.
Upon arriving, he saw fires, over-turned cars, dead people, injured people, people, shattered store windows, crumbled concrete, etc. He whistled at the damage.
“Well, no one’s done this much damage in a long while,” Dante said. A shadow rose over the torn city. Dante turned around towards its source. The beast was about as big as Beowulf had been.
“And who might you be?” Dante asked.
“YOUR DEMISE!!!” roared the demon.
Dante reached for his guns, “As usual, you demons have no class at all.”
The twin handguns targeted the demon’s face and four rounds were shot off. The demon stood unfazed as the bullets ricocheted off of its skin. Dante holstered the guns.
“Oh, a tough one, eh?”
“You will find that I am not as simple as the rest of the demon’s you’ve fought, half-breed!” the demon bellowed. It was dark brown and had thick, black strands of hair that waved like tentacles. The claws on its fingers and toes were black and what looked like tribal markings were printed on its wrinkled face in pale brown. It looked about twenty feet tall.
“We’ll see about that, hideous,” Dante drew Rebellion and charge at the demon. He started hacking at the demon’s legs. He even air hiked and slashed at it across the face. Dante landed in front of the demon about three meters away. The wounds on the demon all closed up in mere seconds.
“You’re supposed to fall apart and die, you know?” Dante said.
“I won’t, BUT YOU WILL!!” the demon slammed a fist down at Dante, but it was dodged.
“What ARE you anyway?”
“Thief of Heart, now DIE HALF-BREED!!” another fist came down.
“Feisty! Well thanks for sharing your name, now I know your weakness,” Dante dodged again, “Thief of Heart! Weakness? The heart!” Dante leapt and plunged Rebellion in the demon’s chest where the heart would be. A giant hand grabbed him and threw him down roughly.
“Pathetic half-breed! I have two hearts. One toothpick of a sword is useless!” and the demon started to play ‘Whack-A-Mole’ with Dante.
Dante was doing just fine dodging, but he was quickly growing exhausted. Then he faltered and the fist hit its target, pressing Dante painfully into the ground. Cracked concrete dug into his back painfully, cutting through leather. The demon grabbed Dante around the abdomen and lifted him to its face.
“Dante Sparda…. Quite infamous in hell, aren’t we? Perhaps you should join us?”
“Shut up, I’ve got better things to do. And you could use some breath mint, garlic breath.”
“Not very wise either, I see. Never taunt the one that holds your life in their hands!” the demon grinned and clenched its fist around Dante, making him scream out.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
The phone rung again at Devil May Cry. Allison was perched on a corner of Dante’s desk with the phone sitting right next to her. She picked it up.
“I TOLD YOU IDIOTS THAT SOMEONE’S ON IT!!” she yelled in irritation. She had spent the last hour picking up about one hundred calls complaining about the same demon Dante had gone to fight just now.
“Allison?” it was a male voice, and quite familiar.
“VERGIL!! Where the hell have you been?! Dante’s been so fucking sulky, it’s driving me insane.”
“I see Dante’s influencing your language as well. And yes, I’m Vergil. As for Dante, too bad for him, I don’t give a damn anymore.”
“Really now? About a month ago, he gave suicide a try.”
“Well obviously he’s not dead yet, is he?”
“No. Would you like him to be dead? I’ll go right to him now and say ‘Vergil called and wants you dead.’”
Silence came from the receiver.
“As I thought,” Allison said.
“Where is he now?”
“Out on a mission. By the way, forgive me for yelling at you when I picked up. The city inhabitants are calling here nonstop concerning some twenty foot tall, brown demon.”
“It’s alright, I accept your apology.”
“Yo Vergil, you ever planning on coming back?”
A long pause, and then Vergil sighed, “I don’t know, Allison. Dante’s drinking habit is getting very out of hand. Not to mention he’s a bad influence on Rune. Is he still drinking like no tomorrow still?”
“Uh…. Yeah….”
“Then it means I won’t be coming back anytime soon. I might take Rune away with me when he has another break.”
“So let me get this straight. You leave him for twenty years, and then you come back. Now, you leave him again?”
“It’s not my fault Dante has no sanity and could use a brain.”
“Very much agreed!” Allison said enthusiastically. The two laughed for a short while on the phone, but Vergil soon stopped. It just wasn’t right to laugh without Dante by his side. Just recently, he found this nice place where he went that he really wanted to take Dante to, but he just decided to forget about it due to the current situation.
“Man, I wish I could kill him,” Vergil said.
“Then why don’t you?”
“I still love him, that’s why,” and he really did. As much of a an idiot Dante was, he was still Vergil’s younger twin and lover.
“It’s hard to watch two lovebirds part,” Allison said. Silence greeted her.
“….Look Allison, I’ve got some things to do. Don’t tell Dante I called. See you some day,” Verge said, and was about to hang up.
“Won’t Dante just check Caller ID?”
“I’m using a payphone.”
“You really are trying hard to stay away, neh?”
“Of course. Fare well.”
“Seeya,” Allison said and they hung up.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
If only I could see you one last time…. And say goodbye.
Dante lay on his back, a broken rib or two and a broken left arm. He was nearly wasted and the demon was about to finish him off.
Somewhere else on earth, Vergil looked up from some papers he was signing and heard Dante’s defeated voice ring through his mind.
“Dante?” he called out loud. Silence greeted him.
If only I could hear you one last time…. We never even got to say goodbye. Vergil….
“Dante? What’s wrong?” he asked through their mental bond.
I could almost hear you…. but I know you won’t come back again, I’m worthless. Voice…. so close…. so far….
“Dante Sparda, answer me this moment!” Vergil waited and got no answer. He picked up his cell phone and called Devil May Cry. Allison picked up.
“ALLISON!”
Allison held the phone away from her ear for a moment in surprise. It’s not everyday Vergil calls shouting loudly with panic in his voice.
“Uh.. Yes Verge?”
“I need you to check on Dante. I think that whatever he’s fighting, he’s losing against it.”
“I’m not going to do it.”
“What do you mean?!”
“He’s not my responsibility, Verge,” she stated simply, “However, if you want to come and check on him by yourself, that can be arranged.”
“There’s no time for me to fly across the Atlantic before something possibly negative happens to Dante!”
“Calm down, Vergil. What’s the nearest landmark to you?”
“The Big Ben, it’s a clock tower.”
“Alright, you go there now with whatever you want to bring along, and I’ll assist you,” and Allison hung up.
“What do you mean by that?… Hello?! Damn it.”
Vergil dressed in his black vest, pants, knee-high boots, and his coat and made a quick dash from the hotel to Big Ben. He was sure that whatever Allison had in mind, it would allow him to come back to retrieve his luggage later on. When he arrived, Allison was already there, leaning against a car.
“What the?! How’d you get here before I did? Weren’t you in America?”
“So London’s where you’ve been.. As for how I got here, you’ll find out soon enough.”
Allison grabbed one of Vergil’s shoulders and conjured a black portal in front of her, then threw him in after shouting, “Have a nice trip!” She then made another black portal and stepped into it, arriving back at Devil May Cry. It was night, so none of the blind humans saw.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Vergil arrived at the ruins of a city. Something had recently torn it apart. Littering the ground were dead people, injured people, people, you get the drift. Vergil look around for any signs of his twin. Then he saw what might be the demon everyone was panicking about.
A giant demon about twenty feet tall was outlined by the dim moonlight. He ran toward it and heard it say something that included ‘last words.’ Vergil panicked and Devil Triggered, running like a madman on fast forward. The demon had its foot posed over a figure lying on the ground. Vergil dove and grabbed the figure, dodging just before the foot came down. Vergil dropped back to his human form.
“Vergil?” a pair of blue eyes looked up to meet Vergil’s own.
“Get up Dante, there’s business to finish,” Vergil said dully, pulling Dante to his feet. Dante leaned against him for support. In the few minutes it took Vergil to get here, Dante had managed to break another rib and his collarbone.
“It has two hearts.. has to be struck at same time,” Dante said weakly.
“Well, what a coincidence. Let’s finish it, Dante,” and Vergil Devil Triggered. Dante pushed himself off of Vergil, trying to stand. That problem was solved as soon as he activated his own Devil Trigger.
The twins attacked in unison, holding their weapons high in determination. They dodged and ducked the flailing arms, then together their swords into the demon’s two hearts. The demon’s eyes bulged out of its skull in pain, although it didn’t make much noise in its death throws. Dante and Vergil pulled their swords out and cut off the demon’s arms, then the head. Then they hacked off the legs right above the demon’s knees. The demon fell with blood spurting from freshly cut parts in a dramatic slow motion. The streets became painted with a sheet of demon’s blood.
“Well, it appears this place is going to reek of demon for a while,” Vergil said. He waited for some of Dante’s cocky remarks but didn’t get any. Vergil turned to his twin. Dante really did look like a wreck. In the three months since Vergil had left, Dante had become under weight and was looking quite thin. Even in the buffed up Devil Trigger, Vergil could see. Dante wavered in the air and his wings gave out and stopped moving. He fell while morphing back into his human form.
Vergil dove forward and caught his twin brother in his arms. Dante was unconscious. His skin looked deathly pale and it looked like Dante had dark circles under his eyes. Vergil decided to take Dante home -to Devil May Cry- rather than evaluate these factors in the already pale tint of moonlight.
Due to the massive stench of demon’s blood in the city streets where the demon fell, many lesser demons would be paying some unwelcome visits in search of food. That being, meat or blood.
Vergil arrived at Devil May Cry, which was unlocked. He carried Dante inside.
“Take him to his room, Verge. I changed the sheets for him. Not that I know why, he’ll bleed all over them anyway.”
“Thanks, Allison.”
Allison gathered Ebony & Ivory from the battlefield while Vergil started bandaging Dante up. Dante’s wounds weren’t fatal with him being a devil and all, but he DID break a number of bones. To top that off, his healing process was slowed down due to his state of exhaustion. It would be about three days of rest before Dante was as good as new again. Physically anyway.
~ * ~ * ~ * ~
Dante slept through a whole day peacefully, but he woke up a few hours into the second day. He started to call out for Vergil but his throat was too dry and he wasn’t heard very far pass the open door. Dante rolled carefully out of bed and used the wall to support himself as he made his way to the door. When he reached the door, Allison was walking by on her way down the stairs from down the hall.
“Dante, what the hell are you doing?” Allison asked.
“What does it look like!?”
“Looks like you’re trying to overexert your currently wasted body. Back in bed ya go, Dan!” Allison said and tried to push the protesting man back into the room without pressing on his wounds. Vergil came up the stairs from the office when he heard Allison speaking to the only other resident of Devil May Cry, namely Dante.
“I’ll be downstairs after I get some water for Dante,” Allison said and stepped through the door frame and pass Vergil. She came back seconds later using her portal ability and pressed a glass of water into Vergil’s hand. She then went back downstairs again and stayed there.
Vergil stepped inside Dante’s room and closed the door behind him. He set the glass down on top of a drawer shelf and stepped towards Dante. Dante literally lunged at him and hugged him tightly.
“Verge, please don’t leave me again,” Dante whispered.
“Hnh…. I don’t know, Dante.”
Dante’s hug loosened in disappointment. He knew Vergil could break his hold whether or not he was injured. He felt so weak and hopeless. His arms dropped back down to his sides and he backed away slowly with his head held low. Vergil pulled Dante back to him and hugged him, chuckling.
“It’s alright, I won’t leave again. Unless you do something very stupid,” Vergil said. Dante buried his face into Vergil’s neck as his tears spilled forth in relief and happiness. Vergil let Dante cry as he supported him. Then he pulled away slightly.
“Now, how about a drink of water?” Vergil offered. Dante nodded silently. “And whatever happened to that loudmouthed little brother of mine?” Vergil asked as he held the cup to Dante’s lips. Dante drank it all in seconds, choking on the last sip. Vergil patted Dante on the back until he stopped choking.
“Get some rest, Dante. You’ll be just fine in a few days. I’ll bring up some food,” Vergil said. He got Dante back in bed and made to leave. Dante grabbed his arm. Vergil turned around with a raised eyebrow.
“Don’t leave me,” Dante said.
“I’m not going anywhere, little bro,” and Vergil pulled away again. Dante’s grip tightened on Vergil’s arm. Vergil decided that he wasn’t going to be able to make Dante let go anytime soon, without harming him anyway. So he got in bed with Dante and pulled the sheets over both of them. He wrapped his arms protectively around the younger and Dante snuggled up to him.

“It is beautiful when two lost lovebirds find each other again. Life is easier just because the other is there,” Allison said. She left the heated canned soup in a pot over a low flame and exited the kitchen, leaving the light on. She then picked her trench coat up from the couch and left the building, closing the door behind herself silently.
“Perhaps one day, I’ll become one. What am I thinking, I wasn’t born to love. Just to watch. And they are the most adorable pair of lovebirds I’ve yet to come across.”

Well, that is all readers. It could have been split into chapters, but it really isn't that long. Plus, the base idea came from Verge-kun (VergilSparda666), and I don't even own Rune. So I'd feel awkward breaking it up into chapters.
