Lost Myself to Madness
By Sinful Blessing and Cornell Child
Arklay Mountains, 1989
The sun drifted behind the mountains and two young boys sat in their shared room. A room that faced those very mountains. The courtyard below was cast in shadow. The moon was full and the stars were twinkling brightly like a long lost song.
The red haired boy got up and turned the knob on the door only to hear a loud click. A boyish growl emitted from his throat as he threw a fist into the door; only to yelp in surprise.
“I hate this place…” He hissed out through clenched teeth.
“Why do they have to lock our door every night anyway?”
He turned to look at the quieter boy who had short black hair and pale skin.
The black haired boy glanced up from his thick book and raised an eyebrow.
“Why do you think Nash? Its quite simple really.”
Stretching out on the bed, the boy sighed and closed the thick volume in his hands. “I think they would prefer it is we didn’t wander the halls of the labs in the middle of the night. It would be considered a nuisance to them.”
“So? Its not like we’re animals! We’re people too and we have rights!” Nash said obnoxiously. “Kade…”
The younger boy whined as he crawled into bed beside the ebony haired boy.
Kade sighed again and scooted over to the redhead in.
“To this company we are just experiments. They don’t care about our rights that we have in this country.” He said as he sat up and glanced at Nash with warm eyes.
The last three nights, Kade had awoke to find the redhead beside him. Unfamiliar warmth. Despite the fact that Nash had his own bed, Kade assumed that the younger boy had nightmares. Hence the younger boy was crawling into the bed to lay next to him every night. Its not that it made the black haired boy angry, he just wasn’t used to the affection that Nash could give him.
Even when his parents were alive, he never felt that compassion from them. But they never payed attention to him, even if they weren’t out drinking.
Okay Nash…if you really want to, I’ll pick the lock.”
“You will?” The younger boy asked excitedly, green eyes practically glowing with glee. He jumped out of the bed to allow the other boy out of bed.
“Yes…I suppose. But you need to do what I say, when I say it okay? We don’t want to get caught.” Kade said as he grabbed a bobby pin from under his pillow and got up.
All right…” Nash said with a sheepish grin. He watched as the older boy fought with the lock. It swung open after a few curse words and a growl of pain from hitting the door in frustration, causing Nash to give out a squeal. He quickly covered his mouth when Kade gave him a dark look.
“You have to be quiet Nash!” Kade exclaimed in a hushed voice, He leaned in the doorway and peeked into the hall.
‘Kay. Its clear.”
“Okay. I’m sorry Kade…” Nash whispered as they stepped into the hallway.
“Do you suppose anyone would be up at this hour?” He questioned, glancing down the dark halls.
“Considering it is only ten, it’s a possibility.” Kade answered, following the younger boy.
“Yeah…so we need to be extra careful so that we don’t get punished by Mr. Spencer.” He said with a nod as if to prove he could be secretive.
“All right…lead the way Nash…”
“Kay.” Nash said with a grin that seemed to go on for an eternity. He quietly tiptoed to the kitchen where he made it his duty to ransack it. He started to shove donuts into his mouth that he had found in a cabinet. He was very hungry, having been denied his dinner that night for spitting in a scientists eye.
“Yeah…eat a whole lot more Nash. Mmm…donuts.” Kade joked as he watched the other boy stuff his face.
“Th-Theyre…gooofd…” He said as he shoved another donut in his mouth. He quickly chewed it the swallowed and opened his mouth to speak.
“Don’t tell me you don’t like donuts…” Nash whispered in a shocked voice.
“I’m not really one for sweets…” Kade admitted quietly.
“Except for the great smooth taste of Angel Food cake…”He said, looking as if he was going to drool and his normally cold eyes warming up.
Nash looked around the fridge and grabbed a jug of milk. Kade reached up and grabbed a glass for him and watched as the younger boy poured the white substance into it.
Nash drank it down quickly and put the milk back in the fridge, setting the glass down and looking very content.
“You done?” The older boy asked impatiently, folding his arms over his chest.
“Yeah…lets go back to bed…”
The pair of them walked back to their room, both forgetting about the empty glass on the counter. Kade opened their door and fell back onto his bed with a sigh. Nash soon followed, crawling onto the bed and snuggling up to the older boy.
“Night Kade…” Nash whispered, quickly falling into a deep slumber.
Kade smiled and put his arm over the redhead and lightly brushed his lips against his friends forehead.
“…Love you…” He whispered almost inaudibly.
