Ch. 1

Jack looked around the broken down farm and sighed. He really had his work cut out for him this time. He started rummaging through the toolbox to see what he had to work with and couldn’t help but wonder if he was going to regret coming to the farm.

It had all started with a letter from the mayor of Flower Bud village. He had just gotten back from work and was sitting in front of the tv sorting through his mail when he found it. It took him a moment to realize where it came from since he hadn’t been to the village in so many years. A sense of dread filled him as he carefully opened the envelope. Tears stung his eyes as he read through the letter. His grandpa had passed away the night before, they found him sitting in his old rocking chair that morning. The funeral was going to be held the next morning. Jack closed his eyes for a moment before finishing reading the letter.

Your grandfather had no living will, but he did make it clear to all that the farm was to go to his grandson. I’m sorry for your lose, we all loved your grandfather.

Sincerely yours,
The mayor

Jack didn’t waste anytime and packed as soon as he finished read and called to have a flight scheduled.

He had never seen a lovelier day than the one he had sat through at his grandpa’s funeral. Even the birds seemed to be singing for the old man. The only thing marring it was the fact his father was sitting beside him. It was no secret the man never got along with his grandpa or him for that matter and he could imagine why he was here, to gain a profit. He couldn’t let that happen though, he had loved the farm as a child and his mother had told such wonderful stories of the place before she passed away. He wasn’t sure he was up for the challenge, but something had to be done.

He found the mayor after the service was over to discuss the farm. As he had hoped the mayor was more than happy to let him take over though he did warn him the farm was a bit run down. A bit was seriously understating it, as his father was quick to point out.

“Just sell it for what you can and be done with it!”

He had nearly yelled as they walked out of the small church. Jack just shook his head and sighed.

“I won’t. That was his life and mom’s until she left with you…and even a big part of my life. I can’t stand by and do nothing, I’m taking over the farm and that’s final. I’ll call my boss in the morning and tell him I’m not coming back.”

That had been the end of the argument. Now Jack stood facing the overgrown fields with an ax propped on his shoulder and a hammer in his other hand wearing a pair of worn jeans, a near thread bare shirt and his old ball cap. This was going to be a long day…

It was almost nightfall when he stopped working. He had worked all day without much of a break and yet it looked like he hadn’t even scratched the surface. He was tired, sore and his hands were blistered, he didn’t see how someone could work like this on a regular basis. He sighed and slowly made his way to the bathroom. A shower, something to eat and some rest would surely make him feel better. There hadn’t been much in the fridge so that left him with one more thing to do tomorrow. He flopped back on the bed after setting the alarm and tried not to think o everything he was going to have to do. It didn’t take him long before eyelids became to heavy to keep open.
