Chapter One

Title: Lucid
PairingNagase/Gaku
Rating: PG? PG-13? I'm not sure ._.
Disclaimer: This is an amusing way of saying that I do not own these characters, so please don't sue me.
Notes: Part one of two. Definite OOC warning, for certain reasons that will be made clear later on. Thanks to Keruri for the beta. Written for the 100_Themes livejournal community (#84, revealed at the end of the chapter). I apologize for the shortness of this chapter, but fear not! The next one is longer.
----

Gaku is sitting maybe two feet away from him, legs dangling over the side of the cleared table. Both of his shoes are on the floor and his left sock is not far from them. There is a cocky smile that seems oddly out of place, not quite as innocent as the one he normally wears.

Nagase can barely hear the words being spoken, despite the fact that they his own. They sound more like thoughts, fleeting impressions of questions that aren't really there. Gaku says something in reply. It has the same insubstantiality. Nagase shakes his head -- wrong answer -- and the teen's right sock comes off.

Gaku appears restless, as if anticipating a very different sort of conclusion to this game. It has been going on far too long, something they both know too well. Unexpectedly, Kai finds himself growing impatient, as well.

Enough easy questions, he decides. "One plus one?"

His assistant's smile falters immediately, and his face becomes a mask of deep concentration. Slowly, but with some degree of certainty, he answers, "Two."

Questions about chemical formulas and compounds were done in mere seconds, but a mathematical equation such as that... It seems that he is trying to lose.

"Eleven, Gaku. I had thought you would have learned that by now."

"I'm sorry, Kai," the teen apologizes.

"Buchou."

"What?"

"Call me Buchou. I am not helping you merely as a friend, and therefore I expect to be treated with some degree of respect."

Nagase allows his attention to wander for but a moment, and catches a glimpse of the book laying out on the table next to the now-shirtless Gaku. It is a pity that his assistant's lab coat obscures some of the view, he thinks idly as he looks over page 40, chemical reactions. Writing it off as nothing of interest, he looks away, but turns back to it just in case it will provide him with material for another question. As before, page 92, radioactive isotopes, is useless.

He can feel his mouth moving, but the words once again elude his ears. The book. There is something wrong with the book. It wasn't on page 92, he realizes suddenly. Page numbers do not change in reality, only in the world of dreams. Immediately, things begin to change. Colors run together and fade, objects blur around the edges. It is the sensation of awakening, he knows, but he has no intention of waking up just yet.

The world spins, and dizziness overwhelms Nagase. He straightens up and finds himself leaning against the wall – but still very much in the chemistry laboratory of his mind. Gaku leaps off the table, now with only pants and lab coat to cover himself, and rushes over; the game is utterly forgotten. His true feelings are made clear enough during the waking hours, and it seems only natural that the same depth of emotion is given to this construct designed from another's perception of him.

Concern in his eyes, he asks, "What happened?"

"Nothing," Nagase lies. It would not be wise to inform this Gaku that he is a mere product of his dear Buchou's imagination. Dreams are tricky things, and they do not like to be conquered. Proceeding with utmost caution seems to be the best course of action.

The purpose of the dream is obvious, its message clear. He sees no reason to fight it. Perhaps it will be easier if he does not deviate too far from the original plan.

"Get back on the table, Gaku. We have not finished studying yet."

This is met with a grin and eager obedience.

------
End note: The theme was "world of dreams", taken rather literally. Did anyone notice that somehow Gaku's shirt came off but his lab coat stayed on? Nagase's probably disappointed that his subconscious self isn't more logical. o__o;;
