Saria's Final Gift

Link sat in the boughs of a tree, deep in the Lost Woods. Ever since his defeat of Ganon, Link had begun to seek the solitude and privacy the Lost Woods provided. The years had flown by in quiet reflection alone in the woods, time used to perfect his skill with his sword. It wasn’t the Master Sword, Link hadn’t been allowed to keep that or the Ocarina of Time, but it was more then adequate as a training weapon.

Ten years alone in the woods, Link thought, that is a lot of time to be away from the world. Link pushed the idea away as quickly as it had come; he had made his choice and would live with it. Besides, he wasn’t truly alone for he had Navi and sometimes Saria would drop by and chat with him. Perhaps though, it had been a long time coming that he should leave the security of the Kokiri Forest and venture back into the world he had once saved.

An arrow stole Link’s attention away from his terribly predictable sunset debate over whether or not he should leave. The arrow was soon joined by another and eventually five streaks were in flight towards Link perched in his tree. Link deftly leaped into the air and landed easily upon the mossy floor beneath. Another arrow was launched, but it was easy to dodge.

Link let out a silent oath as he recalled that he had left his sword, with most of his other weapons too, back in the tree. All he had was a handful of nuts and a few sticks. The air was alive with arrows, as the rest of whatever was attempting to kill him had drawn a bead on his location. Realizing he was dead out in the open of the meadow, he dashed towards the deeper parts of the woods and waited.

He expected stalfos to enter the meadow as some remained in the Kokiri Forest even after the defeat of Ganon, but when Hylian soldiers emerged Link grew frustrated. He could kill stalfos, moblins, and any other creation of Ganon, but a Hylian born soldier was a different matter. They weren’t evil.

The rest of his gear was well hidden and it already seemed the troop was beginning its search for him. Pulling back in to the shadow, Link hoped to avoid a confrontation, if not for himself then for their sake.

Saria found him later in the old Forest Temple. A few monsters stilled roamed the corridors, but nothing Link didn’t know how to handle. Indeed, Link that night almost culled every Moblin in the entire area with only Deku sticks and nuts. All the while Saria just followed him in respectful silence. She knew how much he had to be hurting. A troop of those Hylian soldiers had entered Kokiri Forest without Kokiri permission or even knowledge, only the express wishes of the Queen of Hyrule could override the protectionist Kokiri’s magic wards. And that meant one thing. Zelda would have had to order the attack on Link.

Most others didn’t remember the old future, the time Ganon ruled, but Saria held some recollections. Most clear in her mind was the singular look in Link’s eyes. It was never about defeating Ganon for him, it was about saving Princess Zelda. He loved her. Also, since the passing of the king, Zelda had been crowned Queen of Hyrule, meaning she alone had the authority to order the death of Link in Kokiri Forest and the power to find him in one tree in the middle of the Lost Woods. It had to hurt.

Link’s attention was grabbed by the sound of heavy boots on the stone of the temple. Saria heard it to and soon heard the sound of three men trying to be quiet.

“Flee”, Saria whispered to Link who was already far ahead of her having thrown his supplies on his back and rounded the corner out of sight.

The three men emerged from the other side of the corridor. They turned and Saria was just sitting before them. She paid them no mind, as they were guests in her home, despite having royal permission to enter. Even if the tried something, she would be bying Link time to escape.

“Hey boss, one of those Kokiri girls is all alone in the middle of nowhere”, the one on the right said as his hand flew out and got a hold of her hair.

“Don’t be sick Ryaur, she’s nothing but a little girl”, the man on the left said.

“Nah ah, she’s more of a full grown midget then a little girl. Look”, Ryaur’s hoisted Saria’s skirt revealing the green patch of hair cresting her mound. Ryaur ran his hand across her slit as his other hand kept an iron grip on her short green hair on the top of her head.

The man on the left’s gauntleted fist smashed into Ryaur’s face and sent him tumbling. Saria, free from her captor attempted to run, but the man in the centre grabbed her nimbly by the throat and hoisted her into the air. With his other arm he swatted both Ryaur and his opponent into submission.

“Listen ladies, while you two argue about the ethics of raping a Kokiri, you failed to notice one thing. She is in a rundown temple, surrounded by dead moblins, and with out a stitch of weaponry...”

“Or underwear”, Ryaur cut in, thinking it was funny.

The man in the centre, who was clearly a commander of some sort, gave Ryaur a look of complete disappointment, “Ryaur, you can’t track, your inept with a sword, and useless with a bow. All you can do is carry gear around. SO shut up already”, the commander threw Saria at him, “Take the prisoner back to camp. She will be interrogated and it would be nice if you followed my orders this time and not rape and then kill her the moment I turn my back”.

“Hey, how many times do I have to say, that girl ran away.”

“Sure Ryaur”, the man on the left chimed in, “an attractive, buxom farmer’s daughter left in your care just sang a song, jumped on a horse and rode off into the sunset”.

“That is exactly what happened, I had only begun to take her skirt off and she began humming…” Ryaur cut off when he saw the look the commander was giving him. Ryaur sighed; tired of being looked at like a freak, he scooped up the girl and rushed back to the camp.

“Sir”, the man on the left said after a minute or so of just standing still, “Are we just going to just stand here, or are we going to find the murderer.”

“Notice something odd about the girl, Leo”, the commander said casually.

“No sir”.

“Not once while she was being accosted by Ryaur did she scream for help. You would think she would scream out for aid, but she didn’t, she didn’t even make a noise”, the commander turned around and began to scan the dark corridor.

“Sir, perhaps she didn’t, because there was no one to hear her.”

“Perhaps she didn’t, because there was someone, someone who we are looking for.”

“Sir, then why are we standing here? Let us find him”, Leo turned to go down the corridor and begin his search only to stop when he noticed the commander remained still.

“I said the girl was quiet, we aren’t”, the commander paused as he looked back at Leo, “I believe Ryaur may finally pan out as useful”, the commander smiled as he motioned Leo to follow him back into the open air, “I’m counting on one thing, that the murderer is as loyal and protective of her as she is of him.”
