!-!-!-!-!

Blue eyes glanced between the large robot looming ever closer, and the orange ottsel that rested on his shoulder plate. Save the world…or his best friend? The green-blonde made his decision quickly, stepping into the Light Eco, and gently raised callused hands to his friend’s cheeks, smiling lightly at Daxter’s shocked and surprised look. He was sure he heard Samos scream ‘NO!’ as well as Keira.

But by then in was too late. The Light Eco had been used, and Daxter was twitching ever so slightly on his shoulder…before he turned back into his obnoxious red-headed self. “Jak! What the hell did you do that for?!” Jak shrugged, looking very sheepish before the loud and slightly insane cackles of Gol and Maia rang through the opened air. The group looked up, eyes wide with something akin to fear.

“Hahaha! Stupid fool! Now you can’t defeat us!” The robot flew overhead, and began to charge for a very…very large blast. Quickly Jak grabbed Daxter’s hand, turned and grabbed a handful of Blue Eco while the four Sages tried to battle off Mol and Maia.

“Jak! Hurry! Dad!” Keira shouted loudly, voiced pitched high in panic and fear as Jak sprinted dragging a terrified Daxter behind him. He grabbed Keira with his other hand before jumping onto the Blue Eco platform, which took them to the elevator. “Oh no…Jak…why did you do that?” She asked her blue-green eyes watery and filled with tears as she watched the giant robot fight off the four aging sages. The blonde boy opened his mouth; he wouldn’t speak though…he never did.

“Can we talk about this later?! Like…when we aren’t about to DIIIIIEEE!” Daxter screamed as Jak leapt off the platform, dragging behind him the two other teenagers. The three sprinted to the elevator before taking it down, where Jak fought off the remaining Lurkers, and quickly they got out of the Citadel…mostly unharmed.

“Quick guys, to the portal!” Keira screamed as a loud blast shook the entire structure of the lava tube.

Daxter watched with uncontained horror as the lava began to lap at the rock they stood on. He tugged gently on Jak’s wrist and pointed. “J-Jak…it’s a lava tsunami!” Three sets of eyes widened before the ever quick thinking Jak set the co-ordinates for teleporting, and pushed his two friends in first, then jumped in himself just as the lava tsunami crashed over the portal.

Slowly but surely, what Samos and the other Sages had predicted came true…Gol and Maia took control. Dark Eco spread fast, and what were once villages became Lurker camps and Dark Eco digging sites. It had turned out that one of the only place that weren’t very plentiful turned out to be the Snowy Mountain. Gol and Maia tended to stay away from the cold where their precious Eco wasn’t harvestable.

Villages from all over their world soon gathered together, trying to build a resistance, or at least survive, all that is…except for two. After the mayors and other leaders of the villages met, and discussed what Keira had told them, and she didn’t hide the fact that it was Jak’s fault, and she threw Daxter’s name in just for kicks. She was angry, beyond angry. Because of those two her father was dead and she was alone in the world forever now.

“It has been decided boys…and it has been decided that you two are much too dangerous to stay with us.” Jak’s eyes simply narrowed as he crossed his arms, a dark brown cloak wrapped around his chilled shoulders that almost touched the ground.

“What?! You can’t throw us out! We are…well…Jak is the only one who can control Eco like…well…like he does!” Jak nodded his agreement, but the leaders of this new ‘clan’ weren’t being swayed by Daxter’s outburst. Daxter opened his mouth to begin another tirade when Jak placed a hand on his red-headed friends shoulder. At Daxter’s confused gaze, Jak just shook his head before glaring at the people who were throwing them out.

“We are sorry boys…Daxter you can stay if you want. It’s just…because of your friend the world is in ruin and the great Sages are dead.” The Mayor from Sandover Village said gravely, no longer even addressing Jak.

Daxter looked quickly at his friend, who dropped his hand from Dax’s shoulder, and looked at the ground with a heavy sigh. “I can’t do that. I and Jak come as a pair.” He said softly before smiling at his friend and pulling a cap over his flame colored hair and his cloak tighter around his slender body. Jak and Daxter’s judges and jury stood before them, looking sad that they had to make such a decision.

Jak sent them one last glare before he turned, Daxter on his heels as they trudged through the knee high snow. Jak adjusted the pack they had given them, which had some food dry wood and flint to make a fire. It didn’t contain much else though.

The two walked for a good hour before Daxter fell, whimpering as he hit his chin on an iced over rock. “Ouch! Jak…can’t we stop for now…I can’t feel my feet.” He rolled over and looked up into his friends blue eyes. The blonde boy smiled softly before reaching out and taking his friends hand, helping him up before they began looking for a place to sleep for the coming night. The temperature was sure to drop some during the night, and they would need a fire and food.

Jak nodded towards a small indent in the mountain which they settled into as fast as they could while not being able to feel their lower, or for that matter upper bodies. Jak made a fire quickly before pulling out some almost frozen food to be heated while Daxter shivered and shook with cold. “I-I miss the palm t-trees. And the s-sand.” The red head said softly, almost quietly. The other boy looked up quickly, his friend was never quiet. Jak offered a sympathetic smile, for he too missed the sand, ocean and palm trees. He sighed and handed his shivering friend an almost warm muffin, while he ate one as well.

Night came too quickly, and with it a fierce snow and ice storm. The two boys were huddled closely together, but they couldn’t seem to be able to get enough warmth. “Jak? I’m cold…” Daxter whispered softly, his teeth chattering loudly and quickly. The taller of the two, that being Jak, looked at his friend before opening his cloak and pulling his friend forward. Body heat was the best way to keep warm…he remembered Samos telling him that. The two clung to each other, their shivers continued but to a slightly less violent degree. “Jak, we’ll be okay…right?”

But Jak didn’t answer.

He never did.
