Chapter One

Cries of Yesterday
A Grandia 2 fanfiction

Written by Krisa Kelly a.k.a. Scarlet Shaman © 2004

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the characters from the Grandia series. They belong to somebody else and I have no such right to hold claim over them. Any non-Grandia related character is of my own imagination.

Author's Notes: Okay, not much to say here. This is going to be a very dark fic that deals with controversial topics such as underage non-consensual sex. Just to warn you again, this fic takes place during the game before Ryudo and co reach the Cathedral, so that means that Roan is still only thirteen and is subjected to many atrocious things. I am trying to handle this in a sensitive manner and hope that I go about it in the best way possible.

About the fic, this takes place DURING the game. I'm having it so that Ryudo and the others have just been on the Skyway but haven't made it to Mirumu Village. Instead, they've taken another way through the Lumir Forest and have ended up here. They will go to Mirumu Village, but they take a little detour first. Just to let you know, yes I know that it's snowy in Lumir Forest, but the way they've headed now isn't. Okay with that? Right then…

Chapter One

Slowly the sun, which was towering in the sky only an hour ago was beginning to set, which meant that it would be best if they set up camp for the night. But the birds were still flying around, so they had at least another hour of light before it turned to night. That would do, a lot of space can be covered in an hour.

Ryudo looked around as he saw several bug-like creatures scurry away near a tall tree that looked half dead. Pity, he would have preferred to waste the monsters than have them run away, both money and practice, it was a win-win situation. He shook his head as he heard a muffled complaint from Elena. Sometimes he wished that he had turned the job down, but a small part of him wanted, and felt he had to protect the Songstress of Granas.

“We can cover at least another hour before nightfall,” he called back to anyone who was listening.

They were walking in silence. Ryudo noticed that usually in the last hour before camp, everyone preferred to keep to themselves. Not that he minded at all because hearing conversation that he knew nothing about wasn't his best way of killing time. This was, he constantly told himself, quiet time. It was the time where he could almost pretend that he was acting out another normal day of a Geohound with Skye.

He stopped when they reached a fork in the road. He knew which way they SHOULD go, but he also knew that the other way would knock off at least two days hike. He didn't know what was down the other way, but he was certain that it was quicker.

“We'll go this way,” he said, pointing in the direction they were going to go down. “It's quicker.”

“Are you sure, Ryudo?” Roan asked, walking to take a look at the rotting sign that named the routes. The wood was a dark brown and the white paint could hardly be made out clearly. “Shouldn't we follow the direction of the signs? We don't know where this leads to; it could be the wrong direction entirely.”

“Trust me; I know what I'm doing. This way is a short cut. You can't get along in life if you follow what others say -- take a risk,” he smirked, sarcastically. He shot a sidelong grin to Elena, knowing that she was agreeing with Roan on this one. “Isn't that right, princess? So, we take this route.”

Elena sighed and turned in a full circle. “It's not like I have much say in the matter, but I recommend that we listen to what Roan has to say. Anything could be down there.”

“Elena, we're not a band of travelling clowns -- no offence, kid. We're more than able to defend ourselves if the big, bad monsters should jump out at us. If there is anything there, we'll knock it down and move along as if nothing happened. Sound peachy enough?”

“I still say that we go the direction that the sign says, but I trust your judgement … somehow.”

“You okay with that, too, Roan?”

“I guess,” he sighed, but smiled suddenly. “It's not like you would endanger us on purpose, would you, Mister Ryudo?”

Ryudo rolled his eyes. 'How can this kid be so optimistic about most things? I didn't think it was humanly possible to see things in such a clear light, but Roan manages…'

“I should have left you in the cave to be devoured by monsters,” he mumbled, hearing the blond-haired boy laughing softly. “Skye!” Ryudo shouted, seeing the bird perched on the sign. “Go and check it out!”

“Sure thing, Ryudo,” the bird said and took flight, disappearing in the direction that the others would soon be headed.

Ryudo nodded his head and turned on the spot, looking at his three companions. “Well?” he said, and walked away; turning his head to make sure they had followed.

The path they were on wasn't that much different to the other. There were monsters but there didn't seem to be as many, which Ryudo found strange. Monsters usually littered the whole of Silesia. Maybe he should have taken Roan's advice; at least he would have monsters to cut along the way, but here…

His arms were firmly at his side as he strode away, deciding to find a suitable place to set up camp.

“Ryudo?” Elena said softly, causing Ryudo to stop suddenly and scrutinised her with a gaze. “This sign here says that we're on private property and anyone found here will be prosecuted.”

“Could explain the lack on monsters then, but it's too late to turn back now. We need to set up camp for the night. Who's going to know that we were here? It's not like we're being monitored or anything like that.”

“But we should respect the law, Ryudo,” she said, fidgeting with the long frills on her costume.

“Laws are meant to be broken, Elena,” he smirked. “That's why they're put there.”

“Ryudo!”

“Elena, it's not really a law. It's just some guy who doesn't want to share … nothing is going to happen to us as long as I'm here, I guarantee it. Besides, what's the worst that can happen? Now come on, it's getting dark and I'm sure you're tired … you haven't been nagging as much as you usually do.”

Elena 'hmphed' as she crossed her arms and followed Ryudo. None of them had noticed what they were standing on until the ground gave way and they fell into complete darkness.
