David sighed as he sat up, getting out of his small, firm bed and stepping onto the hard wood floor of his room. It was chilly in the room, something noticable as soon as he got out from underneath the covers. He shivered and went over to his sock drawer, quickly taking out a pair of boxers and socks. David was fullydressed in time to hear the morning knock at his bedroom door which drew his immediate attention. "Hon, it's time to get up.. Me and your father are heading off to work, and if you don't get walking down, you might get caught in the rain." David sighed once more and went into his closet, fetching a grey hoodie and slipping it on. "Yes mom, I'm going." Why couldn't he ride the bus or get them to drive him ? It sucked. They even assured him when he got his license he'd have to pay for his own car. Where was *he* supposed to get that kind of money from ? 'Get a job'. His father would say.

Yeah, flipping burgers or making pizza. Real good job. He'd have enough money for a car in a year. If he was lucky. It wasn't like they didn't have any money, but they'd never give him any, that was for sure. His father would drone on about work ethic and how he went to work when he was just five with his father, hauling the tool box around or whatever the story of the week was. The only thing his parents told him they *would* pay for was college. An all boys, strictly relegious college.. What was it called again ? Saint.. Something. David couldn't remember. He really didn't want to go.. But how else was he supposed to get the
money ? His mother and father had his whole life planned. He was supposed to get a buisness degree just like dad. Then get married at thirty three, like dad. Then have a family. Go to church. Scrub behind his ears..

"Da-vid!" His mother started again. "I'm going !" He shouted back, grumbling as he shouldered his black bookbag and made sure all his things were turned off. He also did a quick check of his room to make sure his parents wouldn't find anything he wouldn't want them to, then scooted out the door. "Now you have no time for breakfest!" His mother said as she put on her earrings and straightened out her buisness skirt and suit combo. 'Like you'd make me breakfest anyways' he thoguht. "I haven't eatten breakfest in years!" "But it's an important part of the day." His mother replied. "I'll eat a piece of fruit on the way out!"
"Did you say your morning prayers ?" David thought about that for a moment. He was supposed to hurry.. When did he have time for praying ? "Yes." He replied as he grabbed an orange from the coffee table bowl on his way to the door. "You better not be lying, it's a sure ticket to hell."

'So is not cleaning behind your ears' David thought again. "I'm not mom, bye bye." He darted out the door before she could reply again. He took a bite out of the orange as he passed mom's blue Saturn. Dad had the same model, but it was black instead. It was so.. So.. Sleek. Efficient.. Boring. It was like every other car out on the market.. Though it was safe and had a smooth ride. It was also pretty comfortable. David shrugged as he swallowed a bit of orange and took another bite, heading off to school as he thought about cars. If only he could get a GTO or something like that.. Aw man.. Then maybe he'd get some respect. Driving was still another year or two off though, he was only fifthteen. The jocks had the smoothest rides though.. And none of the police seemed to care if they drove the damned things whether they had licenses or not. In the average southern town of Springsdale, down by the border of Virginia and North Carolina.

David couldn't help but wonder if it was the same up further north, or out on the California coast. That would be the life. Hanging out on the beach, catching the rays, far far away from his parents.. Not that he'd ever have the money ( or the gutts ) a small, pesimistic voice in the back of his head chimed in. "Shut up." David muttered. "Talking to yourself again queer-boy ?" A gruff voice said from his left. David blinked and with a start, realized he was outside the high school. He wasn't gay.. Not that it mattered. He'd lost himself in his thoughts again.. It wasn't uncommon. David pretended not to hear the bully and kept going up the steps, sticking his hands in his pockets and keeping his eyes on the ground infront of his feet as normal. Responding only made things worse. "Guttless loser." The voice said as the bell rang and everyone
