Disclaimer - All characters in this chapter are property of Capcom. The plot is mine, but based on the rough storyline of the video game Street Fighter Alpha 2.

Authors Note: This is my first story of this kind, just so you know. I normally write angsty romance, but I've been playing SFA2 an inordinate amount lately, and this story kind of came to mind. It's been murder to write, I'll tell you. Just so you know - this isn't going to be all about combat and the like. Be prepared for some pretty dark stuff...including rape. None in thhapthapter, but you have been warned...please Read and Review. I need it, especially as I'm testing some new waters here.

Oh - and some of my facts concerning some of the characters are probably quite wrong. I've adapted them to suit my purposes.

Chapter I - Dreams and Warriors

The cave only seemed to be lit by the candles and from the pale moonlight streaming in the hole that he had climbed down from. It might have been dim inside, but he could see the fire in his brother's eyes from here.
"What are you doing here?"
He cackled loudly, the sound echoing off the cavern walls. His voice sounded strange this time - not quite the deep, dark resonance that it normall was. It was sharp and demanding, different but definitely...familiar.
"What do you think I'm here for?"
He moved fluidly as he always did, black gi giving barely a whisper of movement as he slid towards the man he had once thought to call master. Without a word, he reached out and grabbed his brother's throat.
"I'm here to show you that the power of the raging dragon is absolute..."
He screamed -

---

- and woke up, sweating profusely from what seemed to be every pore in his body. He couldn't seem to find his breath, and it wasn't for several more seconds that he realised he needed to actually breathe in order to do so.
Ryu realised that he had a death grip on the sheets, and forced his tightly clenched fist to release before he tore something. He looked around at his simple room, breathing deeply now and trying to work out just how and why he was reliving the night of his master's death on a regular basis.
He caught his own eye in a nearby mirror.
'What is happening to you?'
He climbed out of bed and padded quietly over the bowl of water underneath the mirror. He splashed his face a little, cooling off and trying to stop sweat from sliding down into his eyes.
He gazed cooly at the ticket lying on the bedside table. One ticket from Tokyo to New York. One way.
One way.
Ryu Houshi stared at himself in the mirror.
'Your demons are catching you Ryu. Are you such a coward that all you can do is run?'

---

"I know you're there."
A quiet chuckle came through the darkness. "I somehow didn't expect to stay hidden."
Ryu watched as Guy slid out of the shadows into which he had concealed himself. "I assume you got an invite?"
"I'm all packed and ready to go." Guy spread his hands wide. "Anll Ill I be seeing you in New York as well?"
Ryu nodded, but remained silent.
"You aren't yourself, Ryu." The Bishuin ninja started slowly circling the shakotan in the alley. "I can feel it. You're all...worried."
"I worry about a lot of things."
"You're worried about yourself."
Ryu's eyes narrowed to slits, but he didn't turn and glare at Guy, who was behind him again. "And so what if I am?"
"It's the first sign of weakness."
The attack was typical of Guy - swift and powerful, a sweeping kick to the back of Ryu's head. The shakotan spun and grabbed Guy's foot, but the ninja merely twisted the rest of his body, catching Ryu in the thigh with his toes. Ryu grunted and dropped the leg he held, barely managing to block the punch that Guy threw at his chest.
They were circling each other now, ready for combat and game for anything one might throw at the other.
Ryu's out-of-character behaviour continued, to Guy's surprise, when the shorter man seemed to grow impatient and lunged. It was a simple enough blow to counter, and Guy sent his fist crashing into Ryu's face, knocking him backwards. He followed it up with a flipping kick, striking Ryu twice in the upper body. The normally calm warrior finally retaliated, launching into an uppercut that sent Guy reeling.
It was almost more like dancing than fighting, Ryu observed. Guy was light on his feet, sneakers barely making a sound as he scraped along the rough ground. What the ninja lacked in outright power, he made up for in subtlety and speed. Ryu narrowly managed to duck a kick that would have busted his lip, only to find Guy's fist planted in his stomach. He vomited slightly, coughing up blood.
"I hope you're feeling better by the time the tournament comes, Ryu," Guy said, emotionless. "Do you need a hand getting home?"
Ryu shook his head. "I'll be fine."
Guy nodded. "See you in New York."
Ryu spat blood onto the pavement. "Yes. You will."
