It was a humid night when it happened. The moon was full and the villagers outside where celebrating the first seeds of the harvest being planted. But some where in a small house with only three rooms, a woman was giving birth. Her screams could be heard by none but her brother and the mid-wife. The soon to be mother was happcauscause a child born in the spring would bring his own luck with him.
“The head is crowning! You must keep pushing!”
Her brother looked around in concern, he was worried because no one knows who the child's father was, and this wouldn’t bode well with the other villagers, especialy with a former thief raising a child. His sister screamed in great pain as the child was finally removed from her body. And soon the sound of a new born boy crying filled toom.oom. As the child was handed to its mother and was slowly lulled into sleep the mid-wife took the man aside.
“Dimitri… I hope you know that the child if left to live will lead a hard life.”
Dimitri looked to his nephew; he worried that the child wouldn’t make it into this world but now he was far more worried what the world would do to him. The child had a small pair of horns and a tail; it was thin and ended with a point like an arrow head. The child was a Tiefling, and would be hated for something the child could never have chosen. Dimitri was about to say they should just kill the child so as to be merciful to it but then his sister spoke.
“I will name him Zarek.” she held Zarek close to her as his little mouth wrapped around her bare breast to feed on the life giving milk. He opened his tiny eyes to see his mother smiling down at him, and for what would most likely be the only time in his life, he was at peace with the world. Dimitri then paid the midwife triple so as she wouldn’t tell any one of the child, and he then pulled up a stool to sit next to his sister in her bed.
“He will have a very difficult life…the villagers may kill him.” his words fell upon deaf ears; she tha that her son would survive, for Zarek would bring his own luck into this world.
